Biography

I graduated in Biology at the University of Seville and carried out the PhD in Cellular Biology with Special Distinction in 1978. I obtained the Associate Professorship at the national level in May1982, and I incorporated at the University of Córdoba. The postdoctoral training was carried out at Purdue University, IN, US with a Fulbright Fellowship, and I specialized in cellular fractionation and biochemistry of bioenergetics membranes. I developed the concept of transplasma membrane redox system with important implications in cellular metabolism and antioxidant protection, contributing to cellular homeostasis, next diverse projects related to coenzyme Q biosynthesis, its role in aging and particularly in the induction of mitochondrial diseases grouped as Coenzyme Q Deficiency Syndrome. I have been pioneering on the identification of genetic defects associated to this syndrome and coordinated the EU grant UBIGENES of the 6th FP. I am currently working on the development of the new genes identified and the pathogenesis and genotype/phenotype correlation for the diagnosis of these disorders. I have also obtained the designation of ubiquinol as an orphan drug for primary coenzyme Q deficiencies. I am Professor of Cell Biology at the University Pablo de Olavide, Seville, and principal investigator of both Andalussian Center for Developmental Biology (CABD) and CIBER of Rare Diseases of the Institute Carlos III
