The first Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report (TOAR) provides information on present-day distributions and long-term trends of ozone metrics relevant for climate change, human health, and vegetation. However, only few results are available in TOAR for China due to limited long-term ozone observations. Here, we present an integrated analysis of long-term measurements of surface ozone from eight sites distributed in the North China Plain (NCP) and Yangtze River Delta (YRD), the relatively underdeveloped region Northeast China, and the remote regions in Northwest and Southwest China. Trends and present-day values for seven annual and five seasonal ozone metrics were calculated following the TOAR methodologies. We compare the seasonal and diurnal cycles of ozone concentrations as well as the present-day values of ozone among sites and discuss the long-term trends in the ozone metrics. Large and significant increases of ozone are detected at the background site in the NCP, moderate increases at the global baseline site in western China, significant decreases at the northwestern edge of China, and nearly no trend at other sites. Extremely high values of ozone occurred in the NCP and YRD, particularly in warmer seasons. The present-day levels of summer ozone metrics in the NCP are much higher than the thresholds set in TOAR for the highest value groups of ozone metrics. The summer ozone metrics at the Shangdianzi background site in the NCP indicate increases at rates of more than 2%/yr during 2004–2016. In contrast, ozone at the Lin’an background site in the YRD was constant over the period 2006–2016. Our results fill some knowledge gaps in spatiotemporal changes of ozone in China and may be of useful in the assessment of ozone impacts on human health and vegetation.

In the perspective of energy sustainability, biomass is the widely used renewable domestic energy with low cost and easy availability. Increasing studies have reported the health impacts of toxic substances from biomass burning emissions. To make proper use of biomass as residential solid energy, the evaluation of its health risks and environmental impacts is of necessity. Empirical studies on the characteristics of toxic emissions from biomass burning would provide scientific data and drive the development of advanced technologies. This review focuses on the emission of four toxic substances, including heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), elemental carbon (EC), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from biomass burning, which have received increasing attention in recent studies worldwide. We focus on the developments in empirical studies, methods of measurements, and technical factors. The influences of key technical factors on biomass burning emissions are combustion technology and the type of biomass. The methods of sampling and testing are summarized and associated with various corresponding parameters, as there are no standard sampling methods for the biomass burning sector. Integration of the findings from previous studies indicated that modern combustion technologies result in a 2–4 times reduction, compared with traditional stoves. Types of biomass burning are dominant contributors to certain toxic substances, which may help with the invention or implementation of targeted control technologies. The implications of previous studies would provide scientific evidence to push the improvements of control technologies and establish appropriate strategies to improve the prevention of health hazards.

Triple collocation (TC) shows potential in estimating the errors of various geographical data in the absence of the truth. In this study, the TC techniques are first applied to evaluate the performances of multiple column-averaged dry air CO2 mole fraction (XCO2) estimates derived from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT), the Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2) and the CarbonTracker model (CT2019B) at a global scale. A direct evaluation with the Total Carbon Column Observing Network (TCCON) measurements is also employed for comparison. Generally, the TC-based evaluation results are consistent with the direct evaluation results on the overall performances of three XCO2 products, in which the CT2019B performs best, followed by OCO-2 and GOSAT. Correlation coefficient estimates of the TC show higher consistency and stronger robustness than root mean square error estimates. TC-based error estimates show that most of the terrestrial areas have larger error than the marine areas overall, especially for the GOSAT and CT2019B datasets. The OCO-2 performs well in areas where CT2019B or GOSAT have large errors, such as most of China except the northwest, and Russia. This study provides a reference for characterizing the performances of multiple CO2 products from another perspective.

This study analyzed the variability and trend in aerosol optical depth (AOD) over North China using the latest MODIS/Terra C6 merged Dark Target/Deep Blue AOD monthly data at 550 nm from 2001 to 2016. The spatial distribution of the annual mean AOD was generally characterized by two prominent high-value centers located in the industrially and economically developed areas of the North China Plain and East China, and the dust aerosol-dominated areas of southern Xinjiang. The seasonally averaged AOD reached its maximum in spring (0.430 ± 0.049), followed by summer (0.356 ± 0.035) and winter (0.282 ± 0.039), with the minimum occurring in autumn (0.219 ± 0.022). There were notable long-term annual trends in AOD in different regions over North China during 2001–2016: a decreasing AOD trend was found in Qinghai Tibet (−0.015 ± 0.010/decade), Northwest China (−0.059 ± 0.013/decade at 99% confidence level), and the North China Plain (−0.007 ± 0.021/decade), but a positive increasing trend was identified in northern Xinjiang (0.01 ± 0.006/decade), southern Xinjiang (0.002 ± 0.013/decade), East China (0.053 ± 0.042/decade), and Northeast China (0.016 ± 0.029/decade). Seasonal patterns in the AOD regional long-term trend were evident. The AODs in spring over all the study regions, except East China, exhibited a decreasing trend, with the maximum trend value observed in Northwest China (−0.099 ± 0.029/decade at 99% confidence level); whereas AODs in autumn, except in Northwest China, showed an increasing trend, with the maximum trend value occurring in East China (0.073 ± 0.038/decade). Geographically, we also examined the annual and seasonal spatial patterns of AOD trends over North China. The annual spatial trends in AOD revealed a dominance of positive trends in most regions over the whole of North China from 2001 to 2016, but especially in East and Northeast China (AOD trend value of about 0.16/decade); whereas a negative trend was observed over northern Inner Mongolia (AOD trend value of about −0.12/decade). In addition, seasonal spatial trend analyses indicated that a continual clear upward trend occurred in East China in the autumn and winter seasons during the study period, with the maximum average increase occurring in winter (about 0.20/decade).

The vertical profiles of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and formaldehyde (HCHO) in the troposphere at the Longfengshan (LFS) regional atmospheric background station (127°36′ E, 44°44′ N, 330.5 m above sea level) from 24 October 2020 to 13 October 2021 were retrieved from solar scattering spectra by multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS). We analyzed the temporal variations of NO2 and HCHO as well as the sensitivity of ozone (O3) production to the concentration ratio of HCHO to NO2. The largest NO2 volume mixing ratios (VMRs) occur in the near-surface layer for each month, with high values concentrated in the morning and evening. HCHO has an elevated layer around the altitude of 1.4 km consistently. The means ± standard deviations of vertical column densities (VCDs) and near-surface VMRs were 4.69 ± 3.72 ×1015 molecule·cm−2 and 1.22 ± 1.09 ppb for NO2, and they were 1.19 ± 8.35 × 1016 molecule·cm−2 and 2.41 ± 3.26 ppb for HCHO. The VCDs and near-surface VMRs for NO2 were high in the cold months and low in the warm months, while HCHO presented the opposite. The larger near-surface NO2 VMRs appeared in the condition associated with lower temperature and higher humidity, but this relationship was not found between HCHO and temperature. We also found the O3 production at the Longfengshan station was mainly in the NOx-limited regime. This is the first study presenting the vertical distributions of NO2 and HCHO in the regional background atmosphere of northeastern China, which are significant to enhancing the understanding of background atmospheric chemistry and regional ozone pollution processes.
