A Gram-negative-staining, non-motile rod, designated GG-w14T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of Angelica polymorpha Maxim. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that the isolate belonged to the genus Mucilaginibacter and exhibited 93.9–97.4 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity with recognized members of the genus Mucilaginibacter (closest relative Mucilaginibacter gossypii Gh-67T). DNA–DNA relatedness between strain GG-w14T and M. gossypii KCTC 22380T was <41 %. Strain GG-w14T grew at 4–35 °C, at pH 5.0–8.0 and with 0–1 % (w/v) NaCl. The isolate hydrolysed casein, CM-cellulose and starch and contained menaquinone 7 as the major menaquinone. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16 : 1ω7c and/or iso-C15 : 0 2-OH; 39.9 %), iso-C15 : 0 (24.2 %) and iso-C17 : 0 3-OH (12.4 %). The DNA G+C content was 42.5 mol%. These data suggest that strain GG-w14T should be considered as a representative of a novel species of the genus Mucilaginibacter, for which the name Mucilaginibacter angelicae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is GG-w14T ( = KCTC 23250T = NCAIM B 02415T).
Strain S22T, a novel cellulolytic bacterium was isolated from the rhizosphere of pine trees. This isolate was Gram-reaction positive, motile and rods, and formed terminal or subterminal ellipsoidal spores. S22T represented positive activity for catalase, oxidase, esterase (C4), esterase lipase (C8), β-galactosidase, leucine arylamidase, and hydrolysis of esculin. It contained meso-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic dia-mino acid in the cell-wall. The predominant isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7), and the major cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15:0 (52.9%), iso-Ci16:0 (11.3%), and iso-C15:0 (10.0%). The DNA G+C content was 43.3 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences showed that this isolate belonged to the family Paenibacillaceae. S22T exhibited less than 97.0% 16S rRNA gene similarity with all relative type strains in the genus Paenibacillus, and the most closely related strains were Paenibacillus anaericanus MH21T and Paenibacillus ginsengisoli Gsoil 1638T, with equal similarities of 95.8%. This polyphasic evidence suggested that strain S22T should be considered a novel species in the genus Paenibacillus, for which the name, Paenibacillus pini sp. nov., is proposed. The type strain is S22T (=KCTC 13694T =KACC 14198T =JCM 16418T)
A novel cellulolytic bacterium, strain S23T, was isolated from the rhizosphere of the pine trees in Daejeon, Republic of Korea. This isolate was Gram-positive, strictly aerobic, rod-shaped, catalase-negative, oxidase-positive, motile by means of peritrichous flagella, and tested positive for alkaline phosphatase, esterase lipase, leucine arylamidase, α-galactosidase, and β-galactosidase activities. The DNA G+C content was 49.5 mol%. The main cellular fatty acids were anteiso-C15:0 (51.9%), iso-C16:0 (14.7%), and iso-C15:0 (13.2%). The major isoprenoid quinone was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). Diagnostic diamino acid in the cell-wall pepti-doglycan was meso-diaminopimelic acid. Comparative 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis showed that this strain clustered with Paenibacillus species. The 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values between S23T and other Paenibacillus species were between 89.9% and 95.9%, and S23T was most closely related to Paenibacillus tarimensis SA-7-6T. On the basis of phylogenetic and phenotypic properties of strain S23T, the isolate is considered as a novel species belonging to the genus Paenibacillus. Therefore, the name, Paenibacillus pinihumi sp. nov., is proposed for the rhizosphere isolate; the type strain is S23T (=KCTC 13695T =KACC 14199T =JCM 16419T)

Two previously undescribed anamorphic yeasts, strains T-11T and T-26T, recovered from wild rabbit faecal pellets collected in Muju, Korea, were identified using phenotypic and molecular taxonomic methods. The isolates were characterized by the proliferation of budding cells, positive diazonium blue B and urease reactions, the presence of Q-10 as the major ubiquinone, the presence of xylose in whole-cell hydrolysates and the inability to ferment sugars. Phylogenetic analyses based on 26S rRNA gene partial sequences revealed that strain T-11T was located in the Bulleromyces clade and was related to Sirobasidium intermedium, Tremella exigua, Cryptococcus cellulolyticus and Bullera pseudoalba. Strain T-26T was located in the Mesenterica clade and was closely related to Cryptococcus sp. F6 and Cryptococcus heveanensis CBS 8976. Sequence divergence values of more than 4 % from other described Cryptococcus species, together with the phenotypic differences, showed that the isolated yeasts represent previously unrecognized members of this genus. Therefore, two novel yeast species are proposed: Cryptococcus mujuensis sp. nov., with strain T-11T (=KCTC 17231T=CBS 10308T) as the type strain, and Cryptococcus cuniculi sp. nov., with strain T-26T (=KCTC 17232T=CBS 10309T) as the type strain.
A Gram-negative, nonmotile and rod-shaped bacterial strain was isolated from the rhizosphere of Platycodon grandiflorum in a study of bacterial diversity, and its taxonomic position was investigated by a genotypic and phenotypic analysis. This isolate, designated as DR-f4, grew at 4–30 °C (optimally at 20–25 °C) and in the presence of 0–1% (w/v) NaCl. It contained MK-7 as the predominant menaquinone. The isolate had activities of catalase, oxidase and β-galactosidase and hydrolyzed aesculin, casein, carboxymethyl-cellulose, starch and l-tyrosine. The major cellular fatty acids were summed feature 3 (C16:1 ω7c and/or iso-C15:0 2OH) and iso-C15:0. The DNA G+C content was 42.6 mol%. This isolate belonged to the genus Mucilaginibacter based on phylogenetic analysis using 16S rRNA gene sequences. The nearest phylogenetic neighbors of strain DR-f4T were Mucilaginibacter lappiensis ANJL12T and Mucilaginibacter rigui WPCB133T, with 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity levels of 96.9% and 96.4%, respectively. The genotypic and phenotypic evidence suggests that strain DR-f4T should be classified as a novel species, for which the name Mucilaginibacter dorajii sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain for the novel species is DR-f4T (=KACC 14556T=JCM 16601T).
