Understanding the characteristics of the traditional village distribution contributes to the formulation of relevant protection and development strategies. We adopted a series of spatial analysis methods to investigate the characteristics of the traditional village distribution in China by using the watershed as the research unit. Moreover, we conducted quantitative and qualitative analyses of the relevant influencing factors affecting the distribution pattern using Geodetector and mathematical statistics. The findings indicate that traditional villages are distributed unevenly across watershed units. High–High clusters tend to occur at the boundaries of first-level watersheds. Traditional villages have a clear agglomeration trend in space, with a concentrated and contiguous distribution pattern based on the “core density area–ring-core expansion group–belt area”. The key factors affecting the traditional village distribution are annual precipitation, annual average temperature, and river density. The traditional village number has a clear inverted U-shaped relationship with the annual average temperature, river density, and road density. The study reveals the complex and various characteristics of the traditional village distribution and its influence mechanism and offers scientific advice for traditional villages’ future protection and development.

Glaciers experience periodic variations in flow velocity called surges, each of which influences the glacier’s characteristics and the occurrence of downstream disasters (e.g., ice-dammed lake outburst floods). The Karakoram region contains many surging glaciers, yet there are few comprehensive studies of multiple surge cycles. In this work, Landsat, topographic map, Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM), TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X, ITS_LIVE, and Sentinel-1 glacier velocity data were used to systematically analyze the characteristics of Kyagar Glacier since the 1970s. Three surging events were identified, with active phases in 1975–1978, 1995–1997, and 2014–2016. The timing of these surges was similar, with a cycle of 19–20 years, an active phase of 3–4 years, and a quiescent phase of 16–17 years. During the quiescent phase, a large amount of ice accumulates in the lower part of the accumulation zone, and the terminal of the tongue thins significantly. According to the most recent surge event (2014–2016), glacier flow accelerated suddenly in the active phase and reached a maximum velocity of 2 ± 0.08 m d−1. Then, the glacier terminal thickened sharply, the reservoir zone thinned by 12 ± 0.2 m, and the terminal receiving zone thickened by 28 ± 0.2 m. The glacier may have entered a quiescent phase after July 2016. The glacier surge causes a large amount of material to transfer from upstream to downstream, forming an ice dam and creating conditions for a glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). At the termination of the active phase, the subglacial drainage channel became effective, triggering the GLOF. For a period of the quiescent phase, the glacier ablation intensifies and the GLOF repeats constantly. One surge caused 7–8 GLOFs, and then a continuous reduction in the ice dam elevation. Eventually, the ice dam disappeared, and the GLOF no longer continued before the next glacier-surging event.

Supraglacial debris cover considerably influences sub-debris ablation patterns and the surface morphology of glaciers by modulating the land–atmosphere energy exchange. Understanding its spatial distribution and temporal variations is crucial for analyzing melting processes and managing downstream disaster mitigation efforts. In recent years, the overall slightly positive mass balance or stable state of eastern Pamir glaciers has been referred to as the “Pamir-Karakoram anomaly”. It is important to note that spatial heterogeneity in glacier change has drawn widespread research attention. However, research on the spatiotemporal changes in the debris cover in this region is completely nonexistent, which has led to an inadequate understanding of debris-covered glacier variations. To address this research gap, this study employed Landsat remote sensing images within the Google Earth Engine platform, leveraging the Random Forest algorithm to classify the supraglacial debris cover. The classification algorithm integrates spectral features from Landsat images and derived indices (NDVI, NDSI, NDWI, and BAND RATIO), supplemented by auxiliary factors such as slope and aspect. By extracting the supraglacial debris cover from 1994 to 2024, this study systematically analyzed the spatiotemporal variations and investigated the underlying drivers of debris cover changes from the perspective of mass conservation. By 2024, the area of supraglacial debris in eastern Pamir reached 258.08 ± 20.65 km2, accounting for 18.5 ± 1.55% of the total glacier area. It was observed that the Kungey Mountain region demonstrated the largest debris cover rate. Between 1994 and 2024, while the total glacier area decreased by −2.57 ± 0.70%, the debris-covered areas expanded upward at a rate of +1.64 ± 0.10% yr−1. The expansion of debris cover is driven by several factors in the context of global warming. The rising temperature resulted in permafrost degradation, slope destabilization, and intensified weathering on supply slopes, thereby augmenting the debris supply. Additionally, the steep supply slope in the study area facilitates the rapid deposition of collapsed debris onto glacier surfaces, with frequent avalanche events accelerating the mobilization of rock fragments.

The rapid development of remote sensing image sensor technology has led to exponential increases in available image data. The real-time scheduling of gigabyte-level images and the storage and management of massive image datasets are incredibly challenging for current hardware, networking and storage systems. This paper’s three novel strategies (ring caching, multi-threading and tile-prefetching mechanisms) are designed to comprehensively optimize the remote sensing image scheduling process from image retrieval, transmission and visualization perspectives. A novel remote sensing image management and scheduling system (RSIMSS) is designed using these three strategies as its core algorithm, the PostgreSQL database and HDFS distributed file system as its underlying storage system, and the multilayer Hilbert spatial index and image tile pyramid to organize massive remote sensing image datasets. Test results show that the RSIMSS provides efficient and stable image storage performance and allows real-time image scheduling and view roaming.

Establishing the National Comprehensive Disaster-Reduction Demonstration Community (NCDDC) is crucial for enhancing comprehensive disaster risk reduction at the grassroots level in China. Studying the distribution characteristics and influencing factors of NCDDCs can guide future NCDDC layout optimization and related policy adjustments. Using the standard deviation ellipse, nearest neighbor index, kernel density, spatial autocorrelation, and Geodetector, we analyzed the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of NCDDCs in China from 2008 to 2021 and detected their influencing factors. The findings are as follows: (1) NCDDCs exhibit an uneven distribution at different scales, including spatial, urban–rural, and county scales. (2) The spatial distribution of NCDDCs mainly follows a northwest–southeast pattern during 2008–2014 and shows a northeast–southwest trend after 2014. (3) The positive spatial correlation and spatial agglomeration of NCDDCs increase annually. (4) NCDDCs show a concentrated and contiguous distribution pattern in 2021, based on “core density zone–ring-core decreasing area–ring-core expansion group–Ɔ-shaped area–belt-shaped area”. (5) The main factors affecting the NCDDC distribution are hospital density, road density, GDP density, and population density, with factors’ interactions exhibiting bilinear and nonlinear enhancement effects. This study reveals the NCDDC spatiotemporal distribution characteristics and its influence mechanism, providing a scientific basis for future NCDDC layout optimization and related policy adjustments.

Equity in access to emergency service facilities (ESFs) is essential for ensuring residents’ safety and well-being. Previous studies on equity in access to ESFs have mainly focused on individual facilities or single dimensions, failing to capture the overall fairness of the emergency service system as an integrated entity. This study introduces an integrated opportunity–outcome evaluation framework to examine spatial and social equity in access to ESFs at the community scale, with particular attention to disparities across facility types, spatial levels, and socioeconomic groups. A machine learning-based approach combining XGBoost and SHAP is employed to identify key spatial and non-spatial factors influencing ESF accessibility. The results indicate that: (1) In terms of opportunity equity, spatial accessibility to ESFs varies significantly, with lower accessibility in southwestern Yongdeng County and northern Gaolan County. (2) Regarding outcome equity, a significant spatial mismatch exists between emergency resource distribution and population demand, resulting in polarization between oversupply and insufficiency, with the FSs supply–demand imbalance being the most pronounced. Low-income groups, rural residents, and the elderly face greater difficulty accessing ESFs compared to the general population. Among all variables, average elevation is found to be a decisive factor affecting accessibility. Based on these findings, the study proposes a zoning-based planning strategy for ESFs in Lanzhou. This strategy offers practical guidance for improving future regional ESF planning, enhancing urban emergency response capacity and resilience.
