Biography

Espuny-Camacho holds a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine of the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium, 2007. Her doctoral work in the laboratory of Prof. Bart De Strooper focused on the search for amyloid-beta clearing mechanisms as therapeutic strategies against Alzheimer’s disease. Next, she pursued a postdoctoral position (Chargé de Recherches) under the supervision of Prof. Pierre Vanderhaeghen at the IRIBHM department of the ULB University in Brussels, Belgium (2008-2012), where she specialized in human stem cell research and human brain development. Her postdoctoral work developed a pioneer model from human stem cells to study human corticogenesis in vitro and in in vivo transplantation models. In 2013 she moved to the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) where she became a Staff Scientist and further consolidated her work on in vitro and in vivo human stem cell models to study the adult brain in health and in Alzheimer’s disease. She had a maternity/parental leave career break (2016-2017). In 2017, she moved to the University of Milan, Italy, where she obtained a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship and specialized in in vitro human stem cell-derived brain organoid models to study the human brain in health and disease. She was recruited in 2019 as an Assistant Professor at the University of Liege in Belgium. In 2020, she became Tenured Associate Professor at the University of Liege in Belgium.
