The Hengduan Mountains (HM) are located on the southeastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and feature high mountain ridges (>6,000 m MSL) separated by deep valleys. The HM region also features an exceptionally high biodiversity, believed to have emerged from the topography interacting with the climate. To investigate the role of the HM topography on regional climate, we conduct simulations with the regional climate model COSMO at high horizontal resolutions (at ∼12 km and a convection‐permitting scale of ∼4.4 km) for the period 2001–2005. We conduct one control simulation with modern topography and two idealized experiments with modified topography, inspired by past geological processes that shaped the mountain range. In the first experiment, we reduce the HM's elevation by applying a spatially non‐uniform scaling to the topography. The results show that, following the uplift of the HM, the local rainy season precipitation increases by ∼25%. Precipitation in Indochina and the Bay of Bengal (BoB) also intensifies. Additionally, the cyclonic circulation in the BoB extends eastward, indicating an intensification of the East Asian summer monsoon. In the second experiment, we remove deep valleys by applying an envelope topography to quantify the effects of terrain undulation with high amplitude and frequency on climate. On the western flanks of the HM, precipitation slightly increases, while the remaining fraction of the mountain range experiences ∼20% less precipitation. Simulations suggest an overall positive feedback between precipitation, erosion, and valley deepening for this region, which could have influenced the diversification of local organisms.

Global and regional climate models (respectively GCMs and RCMs) are delivering conflicting messages about summertime climate change in Europe, revealing notably a weaker warming in RCMs. A dedicated multimodel ensemble of nine GCM‐RCM pairs is analyzed to assess the role of anthropogenic aerosols in these inconsistencies. The expected decrease of anthropogenic aerosol concentrations is found both to modify the future evolution of shortwave radiation and to generate an extra warming. For every tenth in aerosol optical depth drop in Central Europe, shortwave radiation is increased at the surface by 6.3 and decreased at the top of the atmosphere by 5.6 , while near‐surface temperature is increased by 0.3C. The consideration of time‐varying anthropogenic aerosols in RCMs thus contributes to improving GCM/RCM consistency in Europe for these three variables, but not for water cycle. The results obtained underline the necessity to better consider aerosols in upcoming regional climate simulations.

The analysis of actual evapotranspiration (ETa) changes is of great significance for the utilization and allocation of water resources. In this study, ETa variability in northern China (aridity index < 0.65) is investigated based on the average of seven datasets (GLEAM, GLASS, a complementary relationship-based dataset, CRA-40, MERRA2, JRA-55, and ERA5-Land). The results show that ETa increases significantly from 1982 to 2017. Limited by water supply, ETa is significantly correlated with precipitation (R = 0.682), whereas the increase in precipitation is insignificant (p = 0.151). Spatially, the long-term trend of ETa is also not completely consistent with that of precipitation. According to a singular value decomposition (SVD) analysis, the trend of ETa is mainly related to the first four leading SVD modes. Homogeneous correlation patterns indicate that more precipitation generally leads to high ETa; however, this relationship is modulated by other factors. Overall, positive potential evapotranspiration anomalies convert more surface water into ETa, resulting in a higher increase in ETa than in precipitation. Specifically, ETa in the northern Tibetan Plateau is associated with meltwater generated by rising temperatures, and ETa in the Badain Jaran Desert is highly dependent on the wet-day frequency. Under global warming, the inconsistency between ETa and precipitation changes has a great impact on water resources in northern China.

Aerosols can alter atmospheric stability through radiative forcing, thereby changing mean and daily extreme precipitation on regional scales. However, it is unclear how extreme sub-daily precipitation responds to aerosol radiative effects. In this study, we use the regional climate model (RCM) Consortium for Small-scale Modeling (COSMO) to perform convection-permitting climate simulations at a kilometer-scale (0.04°/~4.4 km) resolution for the period 2001–2010. By evaluating against the observed hourly precipitation-gauge data, the COSMO model with explicit deep convection can effectively reproduce sub-daily and daily extreme precipitation events, as well as diurnal cycles of summer mean precipitation and wet hour frequency. Moreover, aerosol sensitivity simulations are conducted with sulfate and black carbon aerosol perturbations to assess the direct and semi-direct aerosol effects on extreme sub-daily precipitation in the COSMO model. The destabilizing effects associated with decreased sulfate aerosols intensify extreme sub-daily precipitation, while increased sulfate aerosols tend to induce an opposite change. In contrast, the response of extreme sub-daily precipitation to black carbon aerosol perturbations exhibits a nonlinear behavior and potentially relies on geographical location. Overall, the scaling rates of extreme precipitation intensities decrease and approach the Clausius–Clapeyron rate from hourly to daily time scales, and the responses to sulfate and black carbon aerosols vary with precipitation durations. This study improves the understanding of aerosol radiative effects on sub-daily extreme precipitation events in RCMs.

Synoptic circulation patterns over the midlatitudes play a pivotal role in regional precipitation changes; however, the synoptic circulation patterns over eastern Asia (35°–60° N, 105°–145° E) and their effects on extreme precipitation events in the North China Plain (NCP) and northeastern China (NEC) remain unclear. The summer daily 500 hPa geopotential height anomaly fields for 1979–2021 are classified into six synoptic circulation patterns using self-organizing map (SOM) cluster analysis. The SOM1 pattern, characterized by a high-pressure ridge over the north of eastern Asia and a trough near the Korean Peninsula, yields decreased precipitation in NEC. The SOM2 pattern reveals a robust high ridge over eastern Asia, resulting in a higher incidence of regional extreme precipitation events (REPEs) of approximately 24% in the NCP. Under the SOM3 pattern, the anomalous cyclonic circulation over eastern Asia leads to above-average precipitation in the NCP. The SOM4 pattern yields the highest incidence of REPEs in NEC, with the lowest incidence of REPEs in the NCP, as the anomalous cyclonic circulation over eastern Asia moves southeastward compared to the SOM3 pattern. The SOM5 pattern presenting an anticyclone–cyclone dipole reduces precipitation in the NCP and NEC, and the anticyclonic circulation near eastern China associated with the SOM6 pattern causes above-average precipitation in the NCP. On interannual time scales, the SOM2 pattern occurrence with an increasing trend tends to induce an increasing summer precipitation trend in the NCP. The SOM3 pattern occurrence is negatively correlated with the summer precipitation in NEC. Overall, classifying the synoptic circulation patterns helps to improve precipitation forecasting and provides insights into the synoptic circulation patterns dominating the occurrences of REPEs.
