Benson M Kariuki obtained a PhD at the University of Cambridge in 1990 in Organic Solid State Chemistry. He was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Liverpool from 1990 to 1994, University College London from 1994 to 1995, and University of Birmingham from 1995 to 1999. He was a Research Fellow in X-ray Diffraction at the University of Birmingham from 1999 to 2008. He was appointed as a Senior Lecturer in X-ray Crystallography, Cardiff, in 2008.
