Simulated impact damage testing was investigated by fractal image analysis using response surface methodology (RSM) with a central composite design (CCF) on quality of ‘Glom Sali’ guava for drop heights (0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 m), number of drops (1, 3, and 5) and storage temperature conditions (10, 20, and 30 °C). After 48 h, impacted fruit were determined and analyzed for bruise area (BA), bruise volume (BV), browning index (BI), total color difference (∆E), image analysis for bruise area (BAI), and fractal dimension (FD) at the bruising region on peeled guava. Results showed that the correlation coefficient (r = −0.6055) between ∆E and FD value was higher than ∆E and either BA (r = 0.3132) or BV (r = 0.2095). The FD variable was determined as a better indicator than conventional measurement (BA or BV) for pulp browning and impact bruising susceptibility. The FD variable also exhibited highest R2adj value (81.69%) among the other five variables, as the highest precision model with high determination coefficient value (R2adj) (>0.8) for impact bruising prediction. Recommended condition of the FD variable to minimize impact bruising was drop height of 0.53 m for five drops under storage at 30 °C. FD variable assessed by image analysis was shown to be a highly capable measurement to determine impact bruising susceptibility in guava fruit.
The coronavirus is always idealized as a spherical capsid with radially protruding spikes. However, histologically, in the tissues of infected patients, capsids in cross section are elliptical, and only sometimes spherical [Neuman et al., “Supramolecular architecture of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus revealed by electron cryomicroscopy,” J Virol, 80, 7918 (2006)]. This capsid ellipticity implies that coronaviruses are oblate or prolate or both. We call this diversity of shapes, pleomorphism. Recently, the rotational diffusivity of the spherical coronavirus in suspension was calculated, from first principles, using general rigid bead-rod theory [Kanso et al., “Coronavirus rotational diffusivity,” Phys Fluids 32, 113101 (2020)]. We did so by beading the spherical capsid and then also by replacing each of its bulbous spikes with a single bead. In this paper, we use energy minimization for the spreading of the spikes, charged identically, over the oblate or prolate capsids. We use general rigid bead-rod theory to explore the role of such coronavirus cross-sectional ellipticity on its rotational diffusivity, the transport property around which its cell attachment revolves. We learn that coronavirus ellipticity drastically decreases its rotational diffusivity, be it oblate or prolate.
Temperature and humidity excursions during transport accelerate quality loss in fresh produce. This study develops and validates a self-contained Internet of Things (IoT) platform for in-transit monitoring and energy-aware operation. The battery-powered device operates independently of vehicle power and continuously logs temperature, relative humidity, GPS position, and onboard power draw. Power budgeting combines firmware-level deep-sleep scheduling with a LiFePO4 battery pack, enabling uninterrupted operation for up to four days. Using ∼10,000 time-stamped observations collected over four consecutive days in a standard dry truck (non-commercial validation), we trained and compared Gradient Boosting Machine (GBM), Random Forest (RF), and Linear Regression (LR) models to predict energy consumption under varying environmental and routing conditions. GBM and LR achieved high explanatory power () with a mean absolute error of 0.77 A·h, while RF provided interpretable feature importance data, identifying temperature as the dominant driver, followed by trip duration and humidity. The end-to-end system integrates an EMQX MQTT broker, a Laravel web application, MongoDB storage, and Node-RED flows for real-time dashboards and multi-day historical analytics. The proposed platform supports proactive decision-making in perishable logistics, with the AI analysis validating that the collected time-aligned on-route data can configure sampling/transmit cadence to preserve autonomy under stressful conditions.
Microfluidic design, fabrication and experiments have developed rapidly, leading to lab-on-chip separation or fractionation. In this work, we design a continuous concentrator for macromolecular solutions. Our design relies on the analytical solutions for orientational diffusion under laminar pressure-driven slot flow through a microchannel [Stasiak and Cohen, J Chem Phys, 78, 553 (1983)]. Using rigid dumbbell theory, we provide analytical solutions for the design of our microfluidic macromolecular hydrodynamic chromatography. We arrive at our design through the use of well-known confinement-driven composition profiles. Using a pair of razor-sharp blades, our design separates the slot flow into a symmetric core inner slot (concentrated) between two outer slots (diluted). We discover a minimum dimensionless blade leading edge separation for complete fractionation, and that this decreases with confinement, and also decreases with dimensionless shear rate.
This paper discusses on riding comfort and health risk assessment based on ISO2631 for an ambulance that was built by converting from a conventional van. The theory on vehicle dynamics and human responses to vibration including some relevant international standards are reviewed. The ride comfort and health risk are assessed in six positions. The test results are interpreted and some comments on health risk and ride comfort are given at the end of this paper.
