Cultural ecosystem services (CESs) are direct influences on human well-being and sustainable development, and they have become increasingly important in the development and progress of society. This paper reviewed 1248 papers on CESs by using VOSviewer and CiteSpace software. On this basis, we also reviewed 179 selected empirical papers related to this field, with regards to geographical locations, study objects, evaluation methods, and categories. The results show that: (1) the number of publications related to cultural services has increased year by year, and Ecosystem Services, Ecological Indicators, and Sustainability are the top three journals with the greatest amount of research published; (2) ecosystem services, benefits, management, and social–ecological systems are perceptions closely related to CES research, which are also popular topics in the field; (3) the results of a keyword detection show that the cultural landscapes, patterns, mental health services, social value, and other keywords were popular keywords used from 2005 to 2021; (4) CESs have mainly attracted the attention of many developed countries, and the cultural services in cities, oceans, and coastal areas have become the focus for researchers; (5) the recreation and ecotourism, and aesthetic values are the common categories of the CES empirical studies, while the knowledge system and the cultural diversity are the two categories with the least amount of research; (6) the evaluation methods of CESs are mostly carried out using a traditional questionnaire and interview, but mapping and modeling methods have been widely used in recent years.

Since the Anthropocene, drastic changes in the relationship between humans and the earth have prompted human beings to pay more attention to the living environment. As a metaphor to reveal the state of humanity and nature, ecosystem health has gradually become an important issue closely related to global sustainable development ever since it was widely discussed in the 1990s. This study reviewed 4354 publications about ecosystem health from the Web of Science Core Collection by using CiteSpace software. In addition, 135 empirical papers were selected to further analyze the evaluation methods and characteristics of ecosystem health. This study was able to answer four questions: (1) What are the definitions, research content, and characteristics of ecosystem health? (2) Are there any features during the different periods of the development of the ecosystem health? Are there geographical differences in the research? (3) What are the methods and cases selected for studying ecosystem health, and under what kind of conditions do they apply? Are there any patterns or characteristics in the use of these methods? (4) What are the gaps and deficiencies in ecosystem health research, and where should we set our focus on in the future? In general, this study combined bibliometric analysis with a systematic review method, aiming to summarize the current status of ecosystem health research, make up for the deficiencies in the current review, and put forward new insights regarding the concept cognition, evaluation, and future outlook of ecosystem health research.

To investigate whether tourism can act as a catalyst for regional economic convergence during the period 2000–2023, this study fills a critical gap in previous research by simultaneously examining the impact of tourism on economic disparities from both static stock and dynamic incremental perspectives, while accounting for spatial dependence. This study analyzes the economic convergence effects of tourism at the Chinese provincial and regional levels using σ convergence and the spatial Durbin model in a conditional β convergence framework. The results confirm the benefits that tourism brings to economic growth and convergence. Spatially, northeastern China exhibits stronger effects, followed by western and eastern China, in contrast to the relatively weaker impacts in central China. Structurally, its direct effect is more pronounced: the convergence effect is stronger for local areas than for neighboring areas. Temporally, the effect is most pronounced in the early (2000–2012) and late (2020–2023) phases, but becomes statistically insignificant in the intermediate period (2013–2019). By moving beyond the question of whether tourism drives growth to reveal for which regions it is most beneficial, this study offers a refined analytical perspective and actionable insights for achieving balanced regional development in China and other countries and regions at a comparable stage of development. The findings also highlight the potential of cultural heritage as a lever for sustainable and equitable regional growth, channeled through tourism.

Recreational services (RS) play a significant role in promoting the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature and enhancing public mental health. This study systematically examined the spatiotemporal evolutionary characteristics and coupling relationships between the supply and demand of RS in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region from 2010 to 2020. By integrating multi-source data—including land use, big data, and fundamental geographic information—a quantitative indicator system for the potential supply and demand of RS was constructed, and the Geo-detector method was employed to identify key driving factors. The results indicate that: (1) During the study period, spatial mismatches existed between the supply and demand of RS in the YRD, though the overall imbalance tended to decrease; (2) Both high-supply and high-demand areas exhibited significant spatial clustering, with high-supply areas primarily located in the southern part and high-demand areas concentrated in the eastern part, leading to extensive supply deficits in the eastern YRD due to spatial misalignment; and (3) The supply and demand of RS are jointly driven by natural and social factors, with tourism economic activity and urban spatial expansion being the key influencing factors. Based on these findings, we propose that regional differentiated strategies, spatial planning coordination, and data-driven governance should be adopted to enhance the supply–demand balance of RS in the YRD and promote synergistic socio-ecological development.
