Professor Michela Bertolotto received a BSc (1993) and a Ph.D. degree in computer science (1998) from the University of Genova (Italy). Subsequently, she worked at the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) and the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering of the University of Maine as a postdoctoral research associate. She joined UCD in September 2000. Her main research interests include spatiotemporal data modeling and mining, mobile and web-based GIS, map personalization, and open and crowd-sourced spatial data. Dr. Bertolotto is leading a research group that includes four postgraduate students and two postdoctoral researchers. At UCD, she has supervised to completion 8 MSc and 19 Ph.D. students. Several of her former Ph.D. students have secured postdoctoral academic positions in Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, the USA, Brazil, Pakistan, and the UK, as well as the EU and NATO. She has acted as an external examiner for Ph.D. theses in Italy, Spain, Brazil, France, and Denmark. She has published over 100 scientific papers in prestigious journals and conferences in geographic information science (GIScience) and related disciplines and has been on the Program Committee of all major international GIScience events. She has chaired seven international events and co-edited eight volumes. She has been an invited speaker to several international institutions, including ETH (Switzerland) and Rutgers University (USA).
