In protected areas (PAs) in Bangladesh, as policies shift from net deforestation, conservation initiatives and various management plans have been implemented to reduce deforestation and include public participation at multiple levels. However, the interactive effect of land-related policies on deforestation in PAs is poorly understood. In this study, land-use change analysis using geographic information system data was performed to investigate how policies affected land use and land cover change in Rema-Kalenga Wildlife Sanctuary (RKWS), particularly the National Forest Policy (1979~), National Land Policy (2001~), and Agricultural Land Policy (1999~), using a series of Landsat images captured at different times. Our analyses showed that the total forest area increased in the 1994–2005 period when a plantation program was implemented, and also that many forest areas were replaced with noncommercial agricultural land areas in the 2005–2013 and 2013–2018 periods, when land zoning and co-management programs were implemented under different land-related policies. Commercial and non-commercial agricultural land expansions were the main drivers of deforestation, suggesting that several programs under the different land-related policies could have had synergetic effects on deforestation even in PAs. Our findings emphasize the importance of considering the undesirable effects of land-related policies in Pas, and the need to support the community for forest conservation.

In this study, we examined the difference in expenditure patterns between foreign resident visitors and foreign tourist visitors at a nature-based destination. We also examined the effects of sociodemographic profiles, travel characteristics, and perceived importance on expenditure patterns during off-peak and peak seasons. Generally, the results revealed low average daily expenditure compared with other nature-based destinations. Whereas no differences were observed during the off-peak season, the sociodemographic characteristics, travel characteristics, perceived importance, and expenditure pattern differed between foreign resident and foreign tourist visitors during the peak season. These results suggest that patterns of expenditure and perceived importance of foreign visitors are influenced by the seasonality of a nature-based destination. On the other hand, foreign resident visitors and foreign tourist visitors differ in their characteristics, perceived importance of destination attributes, and expenditure patterns, particularly during the peak season. Longer periods of residence in the host country might result in foreign resident visitors becoming local visitors. Our findings contribute to practical knowledge of the segmentation of foreign visitors at nature-based destinations.

Community-based tourism (CBT) in national parks (NPs) is promising for diversifying local livelihood strategies while encouraging them to support conservation efforts. Although tourism in NPs is prominent, studies in the context of the newly emerged CBT in developing countries remain challenging. To understand the mechanism on how residents’ sociodemographic characteristics influence their support of CBT developments in the early stage, the merge social exchange theory (SET) and identity theory were used. In total, 934 usable questionnaires were obtained from 12 villages adjacent to Gunung Ciremai National Park (GCNP), Indonesia. The piecewise structural equation model results implied that the influence of residents’ sociodemographic characteristics and their support for tourism development was partially and fully mediated by perceived benefits and costs. While the influence of involvement in tourism and formal education attainment toward their level of support was partially mediated, gender and personal monthly incomes were fully mediated by perceived benefits and costs. The findings confirm the suitability of merging SET and identity theory in the context of newly CBT development in NPs. The NP managers should be aware of the sociodemographic characteristics of adjacent communities, which are essential for supporting the sustainability of CBT initiatives as well as NPs conservation efforts.

Although negative perceptions of wildlands may play a role in outdoor recreational preferences, little is known about whether childhood nature experiences change people’s negative perceptions towards nature and their preferences for outdoor recreation later in life. We conducted a questionnaire survey of university students in Tokyo, Japan, to explore their disgust and fear-evoking episodes in early outdoor activities and how those experiences influenced later preferences for nature-related activities. We constructed a structured equation model (SEM) to analyze structural relationships across a variety of factors: sociodemographics, amount of green space in childhood environments, childhood nature experiences, disgust sensitivity and fear expectancy arising from outdoor activities, and preferences for outdoor activity later in life. We found that disgust and fear-evoking experiences in early outdoor activities decreased levels of disgust sensitivity and fear expectancy later on. The SEM results showed that disgust sensitivity towards outdoor activities significantly and negatively influenced preferences for outdoor activities, whereas fear expectancy did not. Childhood nature experiences were a strong predictor of disgust sensitivity to, and fear expectancy for, outdoor activities, suggesting that increasing contact with nature during childhood would be useful for decreasing negative perceptions of nature later on. In addition, the quantity of green areas around residential settings significantly positively impacted childhood nature experiences, highlighting the important role of accessible urban green space for childhood recreation and durable positive perceptions of nature.

We analyze changes in residents’ attitudes toward community-based tourism through destination development and its usefulness as a complementary variable for coherent indications of what stage of a life cycle a destination is in, using Gunung Ciremai National Park (GCNP), Indonesia, as a case study. Social exchange theory and prominent tourism area life cycle models were used as the theoretical frameworks. In total, 934 usable questionnaires were obtained from 12 villages adjacent to GCNP. We found that residents’ attitudes were evolving with the development of community-based tourism and its life cycle. Nonlinearity was evident in the relationship between residents’ perceived benefits and their support. The perceived cost of tourism was significant and linearly associated with residents’ support for tourism development. We propose that some destinations in GCNP are undergoing significant changes and are in the early stages of their development. Theoretical and practical implications are proposed.

An invasive goldenrod, Solidago altissima, is abundant in urban environment of Japan and a threat to native biodiversity. Aerial remote sensing approach would be useful for effective monitoring and management of the species. However, it is challenging for remote sensing technique to detect a specific single plant species with a small crown and population size in highly heterogeneous urban environments. This study investigated the ability to upscale the in-situ hyperspectral reflectance signature obtained at crown level for landscape scale detection. Field hyperspectral sensors were used to obtain the spectral signatures of Solidago altissima and its surrounding features at crown scale (5 cm × 5 cm, instantaneous field of view (IFOV)). By using the first derivative analysis, the hyperspectral indices namely SAFI (S. altissima flower index) was developed based on the sensitive and peak reflectance of full blooming flower. This index was subsequently applied to identify the blooming S. altissima at population scale (1 m × 1 m) and landscape scale (5 m × 5 m) using field hyperspectral sensor and satellite data respectively. The results at crown scale showed that SAFI was able to discriminate S. altissima from their surrounding features with average probability of 72%. At the population scale with (1 m plot), SAFI can discriminate plot with different S. altissima flower distribution starting from 45%dominance. At landscape scale, effective detection was found at SAFI value over 0.3 to 0.5. The sites which hadhigh SAFI values but no actual presence of S. altissima were often under intensive land management such as frequent mowing. We conclude that the detection of S. altissima distribution at landscape scale by direct upscaling crown scale hyperspectral signature was possible using high resolution satellite image with availability of green(~480 nm) and yellow (~600 nm) spectrum bands at fine resolution (~5 m). The detection, however, were influenced by the phenology state of the flowering stages, community size and adjacent plant that possesses similar carotenoid characteristics.

As urban areas and populations increase rapidly worldwide, experiences of nature play in urban green spaces would be a key for reconnecting people and natural environments. However, few studies have demonstrated the effects of childhood nature play on nature-related behavior among adults and its relative importance to sociodemographic factors. We conducted a retrospective questionnaire survey of 1030 adult residents in the Tokyo area, and found that the frequency of childhood play in green spaces was correlated positively with that of nature-based activities from gardening to international nature-based tourism, and even more strongly so than age, gender, and income. Given that participation in nature-based recreational activities reflects people’s interest in and appreciation of nature and can contribute to nature conservation, the creation and effective design of urban green spaces where children can interact with nature will not only improve local environments, but also contribute to global nature conservation.

This paper described the development of a spatial downscaling algorithm to produce finer grid resolution for satellite precipitation data (0.05°) in humid tropics. The grid resolution provided by satellite precipitation data (>0.25°) was unsuitable for practical hydrology and meteorology applications in the high hydrometeorological dynamics of Southeast Asia. Many downscaling algorithms have been developed based on significant seasonal relationships, without vegetation and climate conditions, which were inapplicable in humid, equatorial, and tropical regions. Therefore, we exploited the potential of the low variability of rainfall and monsoon characteristics (period, location, and intensity) on a local scale, as a proxy to downscale the satellite precipitation grid and its corresponding rainfall estimates. This study hypothesized that the ratio between the satellite precipitation and ground rainfall in the low-variance spatial rainfall pattern and seasonality region of humid tropics can be used as a coefficient (constant value) to spatially downscale future satellite precipitation datasets. The spatial downscaling process has two major phases: the first is the derivation of the high-resolution coefficient (0.05°), and the second is applying the coefficient to produce the high-resolution precipitation map. The first phase utilized the long-term bias records (1998–2008) between the high-resolution areal precipitation (0.05°) that was derived from dense network of ground precipitation data and re-gridded satellite precipitation data (0.05°) from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) to produce the site-specific coefficient (SSC) for each individual pixel. The outcome of the spatial downscaling process managed to produce a higher resolution of the TRMM data from 0.25° to 0.05° with a lower bias (average: 18%). The trade-off for the process was a small decline in the correlation between TRMM and ground rainfall. Our results indicate that the SSC downscaled method can be used to spatially downscale satellite precipitation data in humid, tropical regions, where the seasonal rainfall is consistent.

Parental distance and plant density dependence of seedling leaf turnover and survival was examined to investigate predictions of the Janzen–Connell hypothesis. The focal study species, Shorea macroptera is a canopy tree species in a lowland rain forest in peninsular Malaysia. We found that the peak of the distribution of plants shifted from 3–6 m to 6–9 m during the course of the change from seedling to sapling stage. The leaf demography of the seedlings was influenced by their distance from the adult tree and also by the seedling density. Although significant density- and distance dependence in leaf production was not detected, seedling leaf loss decreased with distance from the parent tree and with seedling density. Similarly, leaf damage was not found to be distance- or density-dependent, but net leaf gain of seedlings increased with distance from the parent tree. Although no significant distance- or density-dependence was evident in terms of leaf damage, significant distance dependence of the net leaf gain was found. Thus, we concluded that positive distance dependence in the leaf turnover of seedlings may gradually contribute to a shift in the distribution pattern of the progeny through reductions in growth and survivorship.

Precise spatio-temporal measurements of rainfall during seasonal monsoons are critical for accurate hydrologic analyses in the tropical regions of Southeast Asia. The use of satellite precipitation data is technologically sound but requires downscaling to minimize inherent uncertainties. The uncertainties at a local climate regime that are essential to be resolved are rarely reported; consequently, such work needs attention. To address this problem, we validated the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation data using high-resolution areal precipitation (0.125 deg.) at a seasonal scale. This study examined the performance of the monthly rainfall data product (TRMM 3B43) at the seasonal monsoon scale in the local climate region of Peninsular Malaysia. The high-resolution areal precipitation data (0.125 deg.) were derived from a dense rain gauge network ever collected in Peninsular Malaysia (n = 984). Three relevant performance elements were evaluated: (i) the ability to depict temporal rainfall variation (ii) the quantitative error between TRMM and ground rainfall; and (iii) the ability to estimate the actual rainfall amount. We found that the ability of monthly TRMM data to depict rainfall variation and its tendency to propagate large errors varied seasonally. The correlation between TRMM and ground rainfall was good during the wettest period in all local climate regions. The error was related to the northeast monsoon and inter-monsoon 2 (September–October). Meanwhile, the TRMM ratio varied regionally, rather than seasonally. Determining the local-scale uncertainties will facilitate future downscale activities using TRMM satellite data in this region.
