Structural characteristics influence assessment of fatigue cracking behavior. In the assessment of asphalt pavements, the asphalt structure and practical conditions must be considered. This study analyzes changes in the elastic modulus of the pavement of different asphalt mixtures amid aging and moisture damage through fatigue cracking tests. A model to predict the tensile strain at the bottom of the pavement layer is developed through a structural analysis based on the material properties. The results are comparatively analyzed using the Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide to predict the fatigue crack life. The test results indicate that moisture damage significantly influences the material properties of asphalt pavement and can accelerate pavement damage as the asphalt ages. The coefficient values of the proposed fatigue-life prediction model can be used to predict the fatigue life depending on the age of the asphalt and its moisture damage after aging. The degree of fatigue damage can be predicted by calculating the tensile strain using the regression equation and elastic modulus according to the aging and moisture damage.

Recently, damage to asphalt pavements in South Korea has increased because of direct and indirect factors caused by abnormal climatic changes, such as torrential rains, prolonged heatwaves in summer, and heavy snowfall in winter. Additionally, the use of medium and heavy vehicles is also a contributing factor. Therefore, an experimental procedure to study the moisture damage and fracture properties of asphalt pavements considering the recent changes in precipitation properties, deterioration of road pavement, and traffic conditions in South Korea was developed in this study. Additionally, changes in material properties according to the indoor aging process and fatigue crack resistance were evaluated for hot mix and warm mix asphalt mixtures of the same grade and different initial production and construction temperatures. To evaluate the effect of aging and moisture damage on fatigue cracking, the experimental coefficient values of the predictive model were calculated for each condition. It was observed that the material properties of hot mix asphalt mixtures changed with an increase in aging and moisture damage. The service life of the pavement was reduced by approximately 40–80% owing to moisture damage, whereas aging had a greater effect on fatigue life as the service life increased.

Nitrogen oxide (NOx), emitted at the highest rate among automobile exhaust gases, is the main cause of air pollution, and various construction technologies are being developed to reduce NOx emissions. In this study, the NOx reduction effect of surface treatment technology for road pavements, and the effect of the photocatalytic reaction on asphalt pavements, were evaluated using a photocatalyst. Three types of titanium dioxide (TiO2) were used as photocatalysts, and an asphalt rejuvenator used to recover aged asphalt was applied as a surface treatment agent. To evaluate the NOx reduction effect, a test device capable of testing large-sized specimens was manufactured and compared with the ISO method, which only allowed the testing of small specimens. In addition, the effect of TiO2 and the asphalt rejuvenator on the asphalt mixture was analyzed through chemical analysis. The test results of the newly manufactured mixed-tank photo reactor showed the same trend as the ISO test results concerning the evaluation of its NOx removal performance. As a result of the performance evaluation of the surface treatment using TiO2, the NO removal rate was up to 7.83% when Anatase-type TiO2 with excellent light efficiency was applied. In addition, when the rejuvenator was used, the oxidation of asphalt, caused by the photoreaction of TiO2, was reduced.

In this study, the performance of the fiber-reinforced, stress-absorbing membrane interlayer (F-SAMI) method was evaluated to suppress reflective cracks, which usually occur when the overlay method is applied for the maintenance of existing aged pavement. The F-SAMI method has an effect of suppressing the occurrence of reflective cracks by constructing a material composed of emulsified asphalt, fibers, and aggregates between the surface layer and the base layer. The mechanical performance of the F-SAMI was evaluated through both small-scale (model mobile load simulator 3, or MMLS3) and large-scale (accelerated pavement testing, or APT) pavement acceleration tests on the specimen and pavement structures, respectively, with the F-SAMI layer applied between the surface layer and the base layer. In this study, the base layer was made with an asphalt mixture or a concrete mixture, and the surface layer was made with polymer-modified stone mastic asphalt (PSMA). Evaluation was conducted by applying four types of F-SAMI layer, according to the content of asphalt and aggregate and compared with the case where general tack coating was applied. In order to induce the occurrence of reflective cracks, a notch was made in the center of the base layer. As a result of the experiment, it was shown that regardless of the mixture type of the base layer, the specimen or pavement with the F-SAMI method was much more resistant to reflective cracking than those with the tack coating. In addition, it was found that the F-SAMI method with aggregates was more resistant to reflective cracks than that without aggregates.

In this study, the engineering properties of basalt aggregate used for asphalt road pavement on Jeju Island were evaluated, and the characteristics of the asphalt mixtures used were evaluated to assess the suitability of Jeju Island basalt as road construction material. Chemical composition and surface morphology analysis of the basalt and granite aggregate, engineering characteristics analysis, and filler property evaluation were performed. Mix design was performed, and the basic properties of three asphalt mixtures for the surface, intermediate, and base layers were evaluated. Permanent deformation resistance was evaluated through a wheel tracking test, and moisture resistance was evaluated through a dynamic immersion test and a tensile strength ratio test. The optimum asphalt contents of the asphalt mixture using low-porosity basalt aggregate and high-porosity basalt aggregate were determined to be 5.7% and 5.9% in the surface layer, 5.3% and 5.4% in the intermediate layer, and 4.7% and 5.1% in the base layer, respectively. It was found that the basic properties of the asphalt mixtures satisfied Korean quality standards. The dynamic immersion test results of low-porosity basalt aggregate and high-porosity basalt aggregate were 20% and 10%, respectively, which fall far below the quality standard of 50%. The tensile strength ratios of the basalt asphalt mixtures for the intermediate layer were 0.69 and 0.40, and they were found to increase significantly to 0.87 and 0.80 after the application of a suitable anti-stripping agent. Therefore, it was concluded that in order to apply Jeju Island basalt to asphalt pavement, an appropriate anti-stripping material must be applied.

A significant amount of stone sludge is generated as a by-product during the production of crushed stone aggregate, and most of it is disposed of in landfill as waste. In order to recycle this stone sludge, this study evaluated a controlled low-strength material (CLSM) using ultra-rapid-hardening cement and stone sludge for application as backfill and subbase material for road excavation and restoration work. In addition, considering the limited construction time of excavation and restoration work in urban areas, backfill and subbase materials must simultaneously satisfy conditions of fluidity, workability, quick curing time, and certain levels of strength. Therefore, in this study, CLSM was manufactured according to various mixing ratios and flow, slump, and compressive strength tests with age were evaluated. Additionally, the change trend in the microstructure of the CLSM with age was analyzed. Through indoor experiments, the optimal mixing ratios for backfill and subbase CLSM were determined, and field applicability and performance of field samples were evaluated through small-scale field construction. It was concluded that CLSM, which contains a large amount of stone sludge, can be sufficiently applied as a backfill and subbase material for excavation and restoration work if appropriate admixtures are adjusted according to the weather conditions at sites.
