Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) reinforced 7075 Al matrix composites were fabricated by electrostatic self-assembly and powder metallurgy. 7075 Al powders were surface modified by introducing a cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) membrane on the surface, which was able to form a strong bonding with graphene oxide (GO) through electrostatic interaction. During the vacuum sintering process, CTAB was effectively removed and GO was thermally reduced into rGO. Morphologies of GO nanosheets, GO/7075 Al powders, microstructures, and tensile fractographs of the composites were observed. The effect of rGO content on mechanical properties of rGO/7075 Al composites was investigated. The results show that a good bonding between rGO and matrix is achieved. With the rGO content increasing, the hardness increases gradually, while the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength initially increase and later decrease. The improvement in strength of rGO/7075 Al composites was attributed to stress transfer and dislocation strengthening. With rGO content reaching 0.50 wt %, the excessive addition of rGO gave rise to a weakening in the enhancement of the tensile properties due to the increasing amounts of brittle Al4C3 and cracks.

The short carbon fiber reinforced 2024 Al composites were fabricated through powder metallurgy. The effect of short carbon fiber content on the interfacial microstructure and fracture behavior of the composites at different temperatures were investigated. The results showed that the dislocation accumulation was formed in the aluminum matrix due to the thermal expansion mismatch between carbon fiber and aluminum matrix. With the testing temperature increasing, the size of interfacial product Al4C3 and precipitates Al2Cu became larger, and the segregation of Al2Cu was found coarsening around Al4C3. The addition of short carbon fiber improved the hardness and modulus of the aluminum matrix in the vicinity of the interface between carbon fiber and aluminum matrix. Compared to the matrix 2024 Al, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the composites first increased and then decreased with increasing short carbon fiber content at room temperature 423 Kand 523 K. The fracture surface of the composites at room temperature was characterized by shear failure of fiber, while the interface debonding and fiber pulled-out became predominant fracture morphologies for the fracture surface at increased temperatures.

The influence of a minor strontium (Sr) modifier on the microstructures and mechanical properties of 7075 Al alloys was investigated in this paper. The grain size of cast 7075 Al alloys was refined from 157 μm to 115 μm, 108 μm, and 105 μm after adding 0.05 wt. %, 0.1 wt. %, and 0.2 wt. % Sr, respectively. The extruded 7075 Al alloys was refined with different degrees of Sr modifier. The mechanical properties were optimum when adding 0.1 wt. % Sr. The ultimate tensile strength (σb) increased from 573 to 598 MPa and the elongation-to-failure (δf) was raised from 19.5% to 24.9%. The microhardness increased from 182 to 195 Hv. The tensile fracture surface via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed a transition from brittle fracture to ductile fracture as Sr increased from 0 wt. % to 0.2 wt. %. The result in this paper proved that the modifier can improve the properties of 7075 Al alloy.
