Mobile edge computing (MEC) distributes computing and storage resources to the edge of the network closer to the user and significantly reduces user task completion latency and system energy consumption. This paper investigates the problem of computation offloading in a three-tier mobile edge computing network composed of multiple users, multiple edge servers, and a cloud server. In this network, each user’s task can be divided into multiple subtasks with serial and parallel priority relationships existing among these subtasks. An optimization model is established with the objective of minimizing the total user delay and processor cost under constraints such as the available resources of users and servers and the interrelationships among the subtasks. An improved gravitational search algorithm (IGSA) is proposed to solve this optimization model. In contrast with the other gravitational search algorithm, the convergence factor is introduced in the calculation of the resultant force and the crossover operation in a genetic algorithm is performed when generating the new particles during each iteration. The simulation results show that the proposed IGSA greatly improves the system performance compared with the existing algorithms.

Driving behavior recognition can provide an important reference for the intelligent vehicle industry and probe vehicle-based traffic estimation. The identification of driving behavior using mobile sensing techniques such as smartphone- and vehicle-mounted terminals has gained significant attention in recent years. The present work proposed the monitoring of longitudinal driving behavior using a machine learning approach with the support of an on-board unit (OBU). Specifically, based on velocity, three-axis acceleration and three-axis angular velocity data were collected by a mobile vehicle terminal OBU; through the process of data preprocessing and feature extraction, seven machine learning algorithms, including support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbor algorithm (KNN), logistic regression (LR), BP neural network (BPNN), decision tree (DT), and the Naive Bayes (NB), were applied to implement the classification and monitoring of the longitudinal driving behavior of probe vehicles. The results show that the three classifiers SVM, RF and DT achieved good performances in identifying different longitudinal driving behaviors. The outcome of the present work could contribute to the fields of traffic management and traffic safety, providing important support for the realization of intelligent transport systems and the improvement of driving safety.

Pavement condition monitoring is an important task in road asset management and efficient abnormal pavement condition detection is critical for timely conservation management decisions. The present work introduces a mobile pavement condition monitoring approach utilizing low-cost sensor technology and machine-learning-based methodologies. Specifically, an on-board unit (OBU) embedded with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and global positioning system (GPS) is applied to collect vehicle posture data in real time. Through a comprehensive analysis of both time domain and frequency domain data features for both normal and abnormal pavement conditions, feature engineering is conducted to identify how the most important features affect abnormal pavement condition recognition. Six machine learning models are then developed to identify different types of pavement conditions. The performance of different algorithms and the significance of different features are then analyzed. Moreover, the influence of vehicle speed on pavement condition assessment is further examined and classification models for different speed intervals are developed. The results indicate that the random forest (RF) model that considers vehicle speed achieves the best performance in pavement condition monitoring. The outcomes of the present work would contribute to cost-effective pavement condition monitoring and provide an important reference for pavement maintenance sectors.

High‐resolution millimeter‐wave (MMW) radar is viewed as a low‐cost and highly reliable sensor compared to camera, lidar, etc., in moving scenarios and thus has been selected by highway stakeholders as an important roadside detector to detect the movement of traffic vehicles and monitor traffic flow in real time. However, the echo signal of MMW radar in complex highway environment contains not only the signal reflected by target but also spurious signals and other interference signals, which significantly affects the estimation of the target movement state. To solve this problem, an improved vehicle tracking method is designed to simultaneously estimate the polar angle and polar radius in coordinator of MMW radar. Moreover, considering the movement patterns of target vehicles in dynamic uncertain traffic situations, a set of state space models, such as CA, CV, and CT are combined to represent the vehicle movement. In addition, based on the enhanced detection performance of a single radar, the combination of multiple MMW radars’ information was performed to determine the sequential trajectory of the target vehicle on the continuous road sections; then, the historical trajectory of the target vehicle was correlated and fused. Real experiments in highway scenarios show that the method used in this study is effective in deriving the trajectory of the vehicle and improving the positioning accuracy and reliability when the vehicle performs heavy maneuvers.
