To address the problem of image texture feature extraction, a direction measure statistic that is based on the directionality of image texture is constructed, and a new method of texture feature extraction, which is based on the direction measure and a gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) fusion algorithm, is proposed in this paper. This method applies the GLCM to extract the texture feature value of an image and integrates the weight factor that is introduced by the direction measure to obtain the final texture feature of an image. A set of classification experiments for the high-resolution remote sensing images were performed by using support vector machine (SVM) classifier with the direction measure and gray level co-occurrence matrix fusion algorithm. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were applied to assess the classification results. The experimental results demonstrated that texture feature extraction based on the fusion algorithm achieved a better image recognition, and the accuracy of classification based on this method has been significantly improved.
In recent years, the rapid development of Earth observation technology has produced an increasing growth in remote sensing big data, posing serious challenges for effective and efficient processing and analysis. Meanwhile, there has been a massive rise in deep-learning-based algorithms for remote sensing tasks, providing a large opportunity for remote sensing big data. In this article, we initially summarize the features of remote sensing big data. Subsequently, following the pipeline of remote sensing tasks, a detailed and technical review is conducted to discuss how deep learning has been applied to the processing and analysis of remote sensing data, including geometric and radiometric processing, cloud masking, data fusion, object detection and extraction, land-use/cover classification, change detection and multitemporal analysis. Finally, we discussed technical challenges and concluded directions for future research in deep-learning-based applications for remote sensing big data.
Reconstructing the missing data for cloud/shadow-covered optical satellite images has great significance for enhancing the data availability and multi-temporal analysis. In this study, we proposed a deep-learning-based method for cloud/shadow-covered missing data reconstruction for time-series Landsat images. Central to this method is the combined use of autoencoder, long-short-term memory (AE-LSTM)-based similar pixel clustering and for backward LSTM-based time-series prediction. First, manually delineated cloud/shadow-covered masks were overlaid onto multi-temporal satellite images to produce pixel-wise time-series data with masking values. Second, these pixel-wise time series were clustered by an AE-LSTM-based unsupervised method into multiple clusters, for searching similar pixels. Third, for each cluster of target images, a for-backward-LSTM-based model was established to restore missing values in time series data. Finally, reconstructed data were merged with cloud-free (image) regions to produce cloud-free time-series images. The proposed method was applied onto three datasets of multi-temporal Landsat-8 OLI images to restore cloud/shadow-covered images. The reconstruction results, showing an improvement of greater than 10% in normalized mean-square error compared to the state-of-the-art methods, demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method in time-series reconstruction for satellite images.
Emergency observations are missions executed by Earth observation satellites to support urgent ground operations. Emergency observations become more important for meeting the requirements of highly dynamic and highly time-sensitive observation missions, such as disaster monitoring and early warning. Considering the complex scheduling problem of Earth observation satellites under emergency conditions, a multi-satellite dynamic mission scheduling model based on mission priority is proposed in this paper. A calculation model of mission priority is designed for emergency missions based on seven impact factors. In the satellite mission scheduling, the resource constraints of scheduling are analyzed in detail, and the optimization objective function is built to maximize the observation mission priority and mission revenues, and minimize the waiting time for missions that require urgency for execution time. Then, the hybrid genetic tabu search algorithm is used to obtain the initial satellite scheduling plan. In case of the dynamic arrival of new emergency missions before scheduling plan releases, a dynamic scheduling algorithm based on mission priority is proposed to solve the scheduling problem caused by newly arrived missions and to obtain the scheduling plan of newly arrived missions. A simulation experiment was conducted for different numbers of initial missions and newly arrived missions, and the scheduling results were evaluated with a model performance evaluation function. The results show that the execution probability of high-priority missions increased because the mission priority was taken into account in the model. In the case of more satellite resources, when new missions dynamically arrived, the satellite resources can be reasonably allocated to these missions based on the mission priority. Overall, this approach reduces the complexity of the dynamic adjustment and maintains the stability of the initial scheduling plan.
Non-point source pollution is the main factor causing water quality deterioration. Landscape patterns affect the transmission of non-point source pollutants. Many studies have been carried out to analyze the correlation between landscape patterns and water quality, while most former studies neglected the scale effect. The Jiulong River basin in southeast China was selected as the study area. Based on a landscape cover map generated from satellite images, we determined the riparian buffer zones with different widths, set the catchment as the complementary scale, and then established the multiple linear regression models to explore the relationship between landscape metrics and water quality indices at different scales. The degree of significance of the effect of various landscape metrics on the water quality at different scales was quantitatively analyzed in this paper by using multiple linear regression analysis. The results showed that not only the impact of landscape metrics but also the influence of land cover type on the water quality indices would vary when the spatial scale changed. The credible regression models established in this study can help regional managers understand the correlation between landscape and water quality, and the regression results can be used for land use allocation in a watershed.
