Electric vehicles and hybrid electric vehicles (EV) are increasingly common on roads today compared to a decade ago, driven by advancements in technology and a growing focus on sustainable transportation. These vehicles are powered by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. A battery management system (BMS) is indispensable for ensuring the optimal performance, safety, and longevity of the EV’s batteries. In this review, the latest algorithm trends for BMS software are discussed. This work also focuses on several key functionalities of BMS like the state of charge (SOC) estimation, state of health (SOH) monitoring, state of energy (SOE), and state of power (SOP). Advanced algorithms for BMS are comprehensively reviewed, including those designed for specific functionalities, as well as those developed based on existing optimization, artificial intelligence, and estimation algorithms. These algorithms address critical challenges such as maintaining symmetry during charging and discharging, preventing thermal runaway, and managing battery faults in EV systems. This work provides valuable insights for researchers and practitioners in the field of EV design and development, particularly those focusing on the advancement of BMS technologies.

Oil pollution in water bodies is a substantial environmental concern that poses severe risks to human health, aquatic ecosystems, and economic activities. Rising energy consumption and industrial activity have resulted in more oil spills, damaging long-term ecology. The aim of the review is to discuss problems, effects, and methods of monitoring and sensing oil pollution in water. Oil can destroy the aquatic habitat. Once oil gets into aquatic habitats, it changes both physically and chemically, depending on temperature, wind, and wave currents. If not promptly addressed, these processes have severe repercussions on the spread, persistence, and toxicity of oil. Effective monitoring and early identification of oil pollution are vital to limit environmental harm and permit timely reaction and cleanup activities. Three main categories define the three main methodologies of oil spill detection. Remote sensing utilizes satellite imaging and airborne surveillance to monitor large-scale oil spills and trace their migration across aquatic bodies. Accurate real-time detection is made possible by optical sensing, which uses fluorescence and infrared methods to identify and measure oil contamination based on its particular optical characteristics. Using sensor networks and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, wireless sensing improves early detection and response capacity by the continuous automated monitoring of oil pollution in aquatic settings. In addition, the effectiveness of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, such as deep learning (DL) and machine learning (ML), in enhancing detection accuracy, predicting leak patterns, and optimizing response strategies, is investigated. This review assesses the advantages and limits of these detection technologies and offers future research directions to advance oil spill monitoring. The results help create more sustainable and efficient plans for controlling oil pollution and safeguarding aquatic habitats.

Image segmentation is one of the important applications of deep learning models, such as U-Net and Mask R-CNN, in medical imaging. The image segmentation process enables automated extraction of important information within images, including spine X-rays, saving medical practitioners hours of work. However, for X-ray images, low contrast and noise may affect the quality of the images and consequently reduce the effectiveness of the deep learning models in providing a robust segmentation. Image enhancement prior to feeding the images to segmentation models can help to overcome the issues caused by the low-quality images. This paper aims to evaluate the effects of three image enhancement methods, namely, the contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), histogram equalization (HE), and anisotropic diffusion (AD), for improving image segmentation performance of Mask R-CNN, non-transfer learning Mask R-CNN, and U-Net. The findings show image enhancement methods provide significant improvement to the U-Net, and, interestingly, no noticeable improvement of performance on Mask R-CNN is observed. The application of HE for transfer learning Mask R-CNN achieved the highest Dice score of 0.942 ± 0.001 for binary segmentation. The randomly initialized Mask R-CNN obtains the highest DSC of 0.941 ± 0.002 on the same task. On the other hand, for U-Net, despite the presence of statistically significant change by applying image enhancement methods, the model achieves a maximum Dice score of 0.916 ± 0.003, lower than Mask R-CNN with and without transfer learning. A study on image enhancement methods and recent deep learning algorithms is necessary to better understand the effect of image enhancement techniques using deep learning.

Microarrays have been proven to be beneficial for understanding the genetics of disease. They are used to assess many different types of cancers. Machine learning algorithms, like the artificial neural network (ANN), can be trained to determine whether a microarray sample is cancerous or not. The classification is performed using the features of DNA microarray data, which are composed of thousands of gene values. However, most of the gene values have been proven to be uninformative and redundant. Meanwhile, the number of the samples is significantly smaller in comparison to the number of genes. Therefore, this paper proposed the use of a simulated Kalman filter with mutation (SKF-MUT) for the feature selection of microarray data to enhance the classification accuracy of ANN. The algorithm is based on a metaheuristics optimization algorithm, inspired by the famous Kalman filter estimator. The mutation operator is proposed to enhance the performance of the original SKF in the selection of microarray features. Eight different benchmark datasets were used, which comprised: diffuse large b-cell lymphomas (DLBCL); prostate cancer; lung cancer; leukemia cancer; “small, round blue cell tumor” (SRBCT); brain tumor; nine types of human tumors; and 11 types of human tumors. These consist of both binary and multiclass datasets. The accuracy is taken as the performance measurement by considering the confusion matrix. Based on the results, SKF-MUT effectively selected the number of features needed, leading toward a higher classification accuracy ranging from 95% to 100%.

Water quality is crucial to the economy and ecology because a healthy aquatic eco-system supports human survival and biodiversity. We have developed the Neuro-Adapt Fuzzy Strategist (NAFS) to improve water quality index (WQI) forecasting accuracy. The objective of the developed model is to achieve a balance by improving prediction accuracy while preserving high interpretability and computational efficiency. Neural networks and fuzzy logic improve the NAFS model’s flexibility and prediction accuracy, while its optimized backward pass improves training convergence speed and parameter update effectiveness, contributing to better learning performance. The normalized and partial derivative computations are refined to improve the model. NAFS is compared with ANN, Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS), and current machine learning (ML) models such as LSTM, GRU, and Transformer based on performance evaluation metrics. NAFS outperforms ANFIS and ANN, with MSE of 1.678. NAFS predicts water quality better than ANFIS and ANN, with RMSE of 1.295. NAFS captures complicated water quality parameter interdependencies better than ANN and ANFIS using principal component analysis (PCA) and Pearson correlation. The performance comparison shows that NAFS outperforms all baseline models with the lowest MAE, MSE, RMSE and MAPE, and the highest R2, confirming its superior accuracy. PCA is employed to reduce data dimensionality and identify the most influential water quality parameters. It reveals that two principal components account for 72% of the total variance, highlighting key contributors to WQI and supporting feature prioritization in the NAFS model. The Breusch–Pagan test reveals heteroscedasticity in residuals, justifying the use of non-linear models over linear methods. The Shapiro–Wilk test indicates non-normality in residuals. This shows that the NAFS model can handle complex, non-linear environmental variables better than previous water quality prediction research. NAFS not only can predict water quality index values but also enhance WQI estimation.

A comfortable indoor environment contributes to a better quality of life and wellbeing for its occupants. The indoor temperature, lighting, and air quality are the main controlling factors of user comfort levels. The optimum control of the lighting, air conditioners, and air ventilators helps in maximizing the user’s comfort level. Nonetheless, the energy consumption of these appliances needs to be taken into consideration to minimize the operational cost and at the same time provide an environmentally friendly system. Comfort level maximization and energy consumption minimization are optimization problems. This issue is becoming more important due to the lifestyle changes caused by the COVID-19 pandemic that resulted in more time spent at home and indoors. Inertia weight artificial bee colony (IW-ABC) algorithms using linearly increasing, linearly decreasing, and exponentially increasing inertia are proposed here for the optimization of the indoor comfort index and energy usage. The multi-objective problem is tackled as a weighted single objective optimization problem. The proposed solution is tested using a dataset of 48 environmental conditions. The results of the simulation show that the IW-ABC performs better than the original ABC and other benchmark algorithms and the IW-ABC with linear increasing inertia weight has the most improved convergence behavior.
