Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have exhibited significant performance gains over conventional machine learning techniques in solving various real-life problems in computational intelligence fields, such as image classification. However, most existing CNN architectures were handcrafted from scratch and required significant amounts of problem domain knowledge from designers. A novel deep learning method abbreviated as TLBOCNN is proposed in this paper by leveraging the excellent global search ability of teaching–learning-based optimization (TLBO) to obtain an optimal design of network architecture for a CNN based on the given dataset with symmetrical distribution of each class of data samples. A variable-length encoding scheme is first introduced in TLBOCNN to represent each learner as a potential CNN architecture with different layer parameters. During the teacher phase, a new mainstream architecture computation scheme is designed to compute the mean parameter values of CNN architectures by considering the information encoded into the existing population members with variable lengths. The new mechanisms of determining the differences between two learners with variable lengths and updating their positions are also devised in both the teacher and learner phases to obtain new learners. Extensive simulation studies report that the proposed TLBOCNN achieves symmetrical performance in classifying the majority of MNIST-variant datasets, displays the highest accuracy, and produces CNN models with the lowest complexity levels compared to other state-of-the-art methods due to its promising search ability.

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) have achieved great success in performing machine learning tasks, including classification, regression, prediction, image processing, image recognition, etc., due to their outstanding training, learning, and organizing of data. Conventionally, a gradient-based algorithm known as backpropagation (BP) is frequently used to train the parameters’ value of ANN. However, this method has inherent drawbacks of slow convergence speed, sensitivity to initial solutions, and high tendency to be trapped into local optima. This paper proposes a modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) variant with two-level learning phases to train ANN for image classification. A multi-swarm approach and a social learning scheme are designed into the primary learning phase to enhance the population diversity and the solution quality, respectively. Two modified search operators with different search characteristics are incorporated into the secondary learning phase to improve the algorithm’s robustness in handling various optimization problems. Finally, the proposed algorithm is formulated as a training algorithm of ANN to optimize its neuron weights, biases, and selection of activation function based on the given classification dataset. The ANN model trained by the proposed algorithm is reported to outperform those trained by existing PSO variants in terms of classification accuracy when solving the majority of selected datasets, suggesting its potential applications in challenging real-world problems, such as intelligent condition monitoring of complex industrial systems.

Most existing particle swarm optimization (PSO) variants use a single learning strategy and a fixed neighborhood structure for all particles during the search process. The adoption of rigid learning pattern and communication topology may restrict the intelligence level of each particle, hence degrading the performance of PSO in solving the optimization problems with complicated fitness landscapes. Recent studies suggested that the employment of self-adaptive mechanism in adjusting the search strategy and topology connectivity of each particle along the search process may serve as a potential remedy to improve the performance of PSO, especially when dealing with complex problems. For this reason, a self-adaptive topologically connected (SATC)-based PSO equipped with an SATC module and an improved learning framework is proposed. The SATC module is envisioned to facilitate each particle to perform searching with different exploration and exploitation strengths by adaptively modifying its topology connectivity in different searching stages. A modified velocity update scheme and an alternative search operator are also introduced to formulate an improved learning framework to enhance the performance of proposed work further. Substantial numbers of benchmark functions and two real-world optimization problems are used to compare SATC-based PSO (SATCPSO) with several well-established PSO variants. Extensive studies have verified that SATCPSO is more competitive than its peers in most of the tested problems.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have excelled in artificial intelligence, particularly in image-related tasks such as classification and object recognition. However, manually designing CNN architectures demands significant domain expertise and involves time-consuming trial-and-error processes, along with substantial computational resources. To overcome this challenge, an automated network design method known as Modified Teaching-Learning-Based Optimization with Refined Knowledge Sharing (MTLBORKS-CNN) is introduced. It autonomously searches for optimal CNN architectures, achieving high classification performance on specific datasets without human intervention. MTLBORKS-CNN incorporates four key features. It employs an effective encoding scheme for various network hyperparameters, facilitating the search for innovative and valid network architectures. During the modified teacher phase, it leverages a social learning concept to calculate unique exemplars that effectively guide learners while preserving diversity. In the modified learner phase, self-learning and adaptive peer learning are incorporated to enhance knowledge acquisition of learners during CNN architecture optimization. Finally, MTLBORKS-CNN employs a dual-criterion selection scheme, considering both fitness and diversity, to determine the survival of learners in subsequent generations. MTLBORKS-CNN is rigorously evaluated across nine image datasets and compared with state-of-the-art methods. The results consistently demonstrate MTLBORKS-CNN’s superiority in terms of classification accuracy and network complexity, suggesting its potential for infrastructural development of smart devices.

The cold-chain supply of perishable fruits continues to face challenges such as fuel wastage, fragmented stakeholder coordination, and limited real-time adaptability. Traditional solutions, based on static routing and centralized control, fall short in addressing the dynamic, distributed, and secure demands of modern food supply chains. This study presents a novel end-to-end architecture that integrates multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL), blockchain technology, and generative artificial intelligence. The system features large language model (LLM)-mediated negotiation for inter-enterprise coordination, Pareto-based reward optimization balancing spoilage, energy consumption, delivery time, and climate and emission impact. Smart contracts and Non-Fungible Token (NFT)-based traceability are deployed over a private Ethereum blockchain to ensure compliance, trust, and decentralized governance. Modular agents—trained using centralized training with decentralized execution (CTDE)—handle routing, temperature regulation, spoilage prediction, inventory, and delivery scheduling. Generative AI simulates demand variability and disruption scenarios to strengthen resilient infrastructure. Experiments demonstrate up to 50% reduction in spoilage, 35% energy savings, and 25% lower emissions. The system also cuts travel time by 30% and improves delivery reliability and fruit quality. This work offers a scalable, intelligent, and sustainable supply chain framework, especially suitable for resource-constrained or intermittently connected environments, laying the foundation for future-ready food logistics systems.
