This paper presents a novel shared-aperture dual-band dual-polarized (DBDP) high-gain antenna for potential applications in synthetic aperture radars (SARs). To reduce the complexity of SAR antennae, a DBDP high-gain antenna based on the concept of Fabry-Perot resonant cavity is designed. This antenna operates in both Cand X-bands with a frequency ratio of 1:1.8. To form two separate resonant cavities, two frequency selective surface layers are employed, leading to high flexibility in choosing desired frequencies for each band. The beam-scanning capability of this proposed antenna is also investigated, where a beam-scanning angle range of ±15° is achieved in two orthogonal polarizations. To verify this design concept, three passive antenna prototypes were designed, fabricated, and measured. One prototype has broadside radiation patterns, while the other two prototypes have frozen beam scanned to +15°. The measured results agree well with the simulated ones, showing that the high gain, high port isolation, and low cross-polarization levels are obtained in both the bands. Compared with the conventional high-gain DBDP SAR antennae, the proposed antenna has achieved a significant reduction in the complexity, mass, size, loss, and cost of the feed network.

Low-terahertz (Low-THz, 100 GHz-1.0 THz) technology is expected to provide unprecedented data rates in future generations of wireless system such as the 6th generation (6G) mobile communication system. Increasing the carrier frequencies from millimeter wave to THz is a potential solution to guarantee the transmission rate and channel capacity. Due to the large transmission loss of Low-THz wave in free space, it is particularly urgent to design high-gain antennas to compensate the additional path loss, and to overcome the power limitation of Low-THz source. Recently, with the continuous updating and progress of additive manufacturing (AM) and 3D printing (3DP) technology, antennas with complicated structures can now be easily manufactured with high precision and low cost. In the first part, this paper demonstrates different approaches of recent development on wideband and high gain sub-millimeter-wave and Low-THz antennas as well as their fabrication technologies. In addition, the performances of the state-of-the-art wideband and high-gain antennas are presented. A comparison among these reported antennas is summarized and discussed. In the second part, one case study of a broadband high-gain antenna at 300 GHz is introduced, which is an all-metal model based on the Fabry–Perot cavity (FPC) theory. The proposed FPC antenna is very suitable for manufacturing using AM technology, which provides a low-cost, reliable solution for emerging THz applications.

This paper presents a compact-size, low-cost smart antenna with electronically switchable radiation patterns, and reconfigurable polarizations. This antenna can be dynamically switched to realize three different polarizations including two orthogonal linear polarizations and one diagonally linear polarization. By closely placing several electronically reconfigurable parasitic elements around the driven antenna, the beam switching can be achieved in any of the three polarization states. In this design, a polarization reconfigurable square patch antenna with a simple feeding network is used as the driven element. The parasitic element is composed of a printed dipole with a PIN diode. Using different combinations of PIN diode on/off states, the radiation pattern can be switched toward different directions to cover an angle range of 0° to 360° in the azimuth plane. The concept is confirmed by a series of measurements. This smart antenna has the advantages of compact size, low cost, low power consumption, reconfigurable polarizations, and beams.

This letter presents an efficient dual-band rectifier using stepped impedance stub matching circuit. Theoretical analysis of the dual-band impedance matching circuit comprising a stepped impedance stub is carried out, which plays a key role in designing the resultant dual-band rectifier. The proposed dual-band matching circuit can achieve wide frequency ratio which is analyzed and predicted by simulation. For demonstration, a dual-band rectifier working at 0.915 and 2.45 GHz is fabricated with dimensions of 21.47 mm ×18.93 mm. The measured results show that with a 1500 Ω load, the maximum efficiencies of the rectifier reach 74% and 73% at 0.915 and 2.45 GHz, respectively. Due to the simple but efficient structure of the dual-band matching network, the dual-band rectifier in this work exhibits merits of compact size and high efficiency.

In this letter, a multioctave voltage doubler rectifier using a T-type matching network is demonstrated. The voltage doubler topology is used to flatten the load impedance, which makes it easier to achieve broadband impedance matching. The T-type matching network is used for the broadband input impedance matching. The design procedure of the proposed broadband rectifier is provided and discussed. For validation, a rectifier prototype is fabricated, and the performance is evaluated. The measured results exhibit power conversion efficiency (PCE) of more than 50% over a frequency band of 0.2–3.2 GHz at 15 dBm input power and 70% from 1 to 2.7 GHz. Moreover, the peak PCE is 78.2% at 1.9 GHz when the input power is 18 dBm.

A broadband and high-gain, circularly polarized Fabry-Perot (CPFP) antenna is presented in this article. This antenna employs a two-layer partially reflective surface (PRS) with positive reflective phase gradient, which can improve the 3-dB gain bandwidth of Fabry-Perot (FP) antennas effectively. To generate a circularly polarized (CP) wave, a wideband CP microstrip patch is designed to serve as the feeding source. To validate this concept, an antenna prototype at X band is fabricated. The measurement results show that this antenna achieves a 3-dB gain bandwidth of 28.3% from 8.8 to 11.7 GHz with the peak gain of 14.7 dBi. Within this frequency range, the axial ratio (AR) is below 3 dB and the reflection coefficient is lower than -10 dB.
