Cross sections for electron emission in the energy range from were measured for ions impacting on . Model calculations are introduced to guide the search for interference effects in the electron spectra produced by the coherent emission of electrons from the two H atoms in analogy with Young’s two-slit experiment. Experimentally, a full sinusoidal-like oscillation was observed in the energy range up to in good agreement with the calculations. The oscillatory structure is found to be similar for the observation angles , , , and .

We report highly selective covalent bond modifications in collisions between keV alpha particles and van der Waals clusters of fullerenes. Surprisingly, and are the dominant molecular fusion products. We use molecular dynamics simulations to show that and ions—effectively produced in prompt knockout processes with —react rapidly with to form dumbbell and . Ion impact on molecular clusters in general is expected to lead to efficient secondary reactions of interest for astrophysics. These reactions are different from those induced by photons.
Angle- and energy-dependent cross sections for electron emission were measured for 68-MeV/u ions impacting on These results show, in accordance with our earlier observation, that interference effects are produced by the coherent emission of electrons from the two H atoms, in analogy with Young’s two-slit experiment. Furthermore, the present results demonstrate that the observed oscillatory pattern varies with the electron observation angle, contrary to our earlier expectations but in agreement with recent theoretical predictions.
Interference patterns due to the coherent electron emission from the atomic centers of a molecule by fast electron impact are experimentally observed in doubly differential cross sections. This behavior is supported by theoretical predictions. Measurements are given for the impact of electrons. The emitted electrons are detected in the energy range from , at observation angles between 30° and 130°. In addition to the interference phenomenon in electron emission following soft collisions, it is shown that interference effects appear for ejected electron energies corresponding to the binary-encounter mechanism.
Interference structures associated with the emission of electrons from by fast ions are found to exhibit oscillations of second order superimposed on the main oscillatory structure. The secondary oscillations occur with about twice the frequency of the main oscillations. While the primary structure is produced by the coherent emission of electrons from the two atomic centers, similar to Young’s two-slit experiment, our theoretical analysis indicates that the frequency doubling is a second-order effect, where the electron wave emitted at one center interferes with the wave backscattered at the other center.
