Indoor positioning system (IPS) plays an important role in the applications of Internet of Things (IoT), including intelligent hospital, logistics, and warehousing. Ultrawideband (UWB)-based IPS has shown superior performance due to its strong multipath resistance and high temporal resolution. However, the non-line-of-sight (NLOS) situations noticeably degrade both the positioning accuracy and the communication reliability. To address this issue, we first propose a support vector machine (SVM)-based channel detection method to distinguish the line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS conditions. Then, one base station (BS)-based distance and angle positioning algorithm with extended Kalman filter (DAPA-EKF) in NLOS environment is proposed. For the LOS environment, least squares (LSs) with EKF processing of acceleration (LS-AEKF) and velocity (LS-VEKF) are developed. To further improve the performance, the combination of time difference of arrival (TDOA) and KF in LOS environment is proposed. Simulation results show that the positioning accuracy of the proposed algorithm is improved in various environments. Finally, validated using more than 1000 testing positions, the positioning accuracy of LS-AEKF is 73.8%–74.1% higher than that of LS-VEKF among the two proposed algorithms in terms of three or four BSs metrics.

Cooperative coordination at unsignalized road intersections, which aims to improve the driving safety and traffic throughput for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), has attracted increasing interests in recent years. However, most existing investigations either suffer from computational complexity or cannot harness the full potential of the road infrastructure. To this end, we first present a dedicated intersection coordination framework, where the involved vehicles hand over their control authorities and follow instructions from a centralized coordinator. Then a unified cooperative trajectory planning problem will be formulated to maximize the traffic throughput while ensuring driving safety. To address the key computational challenges in the real-world deployment, we reformulate this non-convex sequential decision-making problem into a model-free Markov Decision Process (MDP) and tackle it by devising a Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (TD3)-based strategy in the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework. Simulation and practical experiments show that the proposed strategy could achieve near-optimal performance in sub-static coordination scenarios and significantly improve the traffic throughput in the realistic continuous traffic flow. The most remarkable advantage is that our strategy could reduce the time complexity of computation to milliseconds, and is shown scalable when the road lanes increase.

In this paper, we propose a novel UAV aided ground nodes (GNs) localization and communication integrated framework, where the age of information (AoI) is introduced to evaluate the system timeliness. We aim to jointly optimize the UAV trajectory, localization accuracy, bandwidth and beamwidth, to guarantee the information freshness. Specifically, we give a two-stage method, where a low complexity initial UAV trajectory searching algorithm is firstly proposed, based on the rough position information of GNs. Afterwards, we formulate a joint UAV location and resource optimization problem. This essential mixed integer problem can be solved by efficient successive convex approximation based iterative algorithm. Simulations show that the localization and communication integrated framework can obtain about 50% performance gain compared with the UAV communication aid only solution, and over 37% performance gain via proper resource allocation. Moreover, the analysis reveals that our proposed scheme strikes a balance among the time durations of localization, data transmission and UAV movement. Additionally, we conduct practical experiments to draw valuable insights into the system design and implementations (An experimental can be found on the supplementary materials, or online at https://youtu.be/OX6Bgz6naUA).

Since vehicles from multiple roads frequently merge at intersections, it formulates a typical traffic bottleneck of modern transportation systems. Proper vehicle coordination and motion plan at road intersections are of importance to guarantee safety as well as improving the traffic throughput, fuel efficiency and so on. In this paper, we try to present a general dedicated intersection coordination framework for autonomous vehicles, where both high- and low-level planners are appropriately designed and integrated. In the high-level planner, two different strategies are formulated to coordinate the autonomous vehicles to generate reference trajectories and feasible “tunnels ”, respectively. Especially, a novel space-time-block based resource allocation scheme is presented to describe the feasible tunnels. Furthermore, to avoid collisions with unexpected obstacles such as pedestrians, bicycles or other vehicles with human drivers, a low-level planner is designed to generate practical trajectories based on the solutions from the high-level planner, according to their local on-board observations. Simulations and practical experiments are carried out, to show that our proposed coordination framework can achieve obvious performance advantages in various traffic metrics, including the throughput, fairness in driving maneuvers and driving comfort, etc. We also find that the high-level planner is effective in eliminating possible deadlocks among autonomous vehicles, which is rarely discussed in existing investigations.

In modern transportation systems, the road intersections where multiple roads merge usually become the traffic bottleneck. Existing coordination solutions such as the traffic signs tend to be ineffective. In order to exploit the full potential of the road infrastructure, we try to address the optimal vehicle coordination problem, by which the traffic throughput can be maximized. We first formulate it as a general centralized collision-free traffic scheduling framework. The involved vehicles could cooperate via instructions from the coordination center, by solving the essential non-convex coordination problem. Aiming at the dynamic arrival of vehicles, a corresponding coordination strategy is thus proposed to achieve better quality of service (QoS), including the traffic throughput and delay. The queue stability on each road can be guaranteed using the Rate Stability Theorem and Lyapunov Theorem. We then try to extend the proposed intelligent coordination framework to the multi-collision-set one, by which the traffic throughput can be significantly improved. A spatial domain based solution is given to solve the multi-collision-set coordination problem. Due to the essential non-convex formulation, high accuracy linearization approximate algorithms are also provided. In the numerical results, we show the vehicle maneuvers and statistical coordination time as the performance evaluation. They validate our analysis and show the performance advantages achieved by the proposed framework.

In recent years, the Internet of Things (IoT) has caught substantial attention as a pivotal technology to support connectivity for massive devices and sensors. With increasing demands for reliable connectivity and continuity of IoT, non-terrestrial networks (NTNs) are developed to provide ubiquitous coverage and broadband service for IoT devices. In this article, we present a UAV-Satellite architecture to perform the localization and communication in an integrated way. This innovative, cost-effective, and flexible network architecture opens up the way for seamless positioning and communication. Specifically, we first elaborate on the settings and process of the UAV-Satellite architecture. The UAVs are deployed as aerial agents and relays, while the satellites provide the location basis and communication backhaul. To fully reveal the potential ability of the proposed structure, we focus on the key technologies contributing to the enhancement of localization and communication from different perspectives, including localization algorithms, beamforming, frame structure design, UAV deployment and trajectory planning, etc. Subsequently, the open challenges of the envisioned framework are encapsulated including synchronization, spectrum sharing, and inherent hardware limitations. In the end, we discuss some technical issues, which are worthy of further investigations under this architecture.
