Juan C. Durán Álvarez is a full-time researcher with the Department of Micro and Nanotechnologies at the Institute for Applied Sciences and Technology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico. He holds a Ph.D. in environmental engineering, which was obtained in 2013. Dr. Durán-Álvarez has experience in the synthesis and characterization of semiconductor materials to be applied as photocatalysts; he also has two decades of experience in the development of analytical methods based on chromatography to identify and quantify organic pollutants in environmental matrices. He is currently interested in the use of bismuth-based semiconductors in green photocatalysis to degrade antibiotics from water and for green H2 production.
