Carbon 1s photoelectron spectra of methane are measured over a photon energy range between 480 eV and 1200 eV. Additional components appear between the individual symmetric stretching vibrational components and are attributed to the excitations of asymmetric stretching and bending vibrations due to recoil of the high-energy photoelectron emission. This recoil effect is the evidence for the violation of the Franck-Condon principle which states that neither the positions nor the momenta of the nuclei change during the ionization event.

A detailed experimental and theoretical investigation of the dynamics leading to fragmentation of doubly ionized molecular thiophene is presented. Dissociation of double-ionized molecules was induced by S 2p core photoionization and the ionic fragments were detected in coincidence with Auger electrons from the core-hole decay. Rich molecular dynamics was observed in electron-ion-ion coincidence maps exhibiting ring breaks accompanied by hydrogen losses and/or migration. The probabilities of various dissociation channels were seen to be very sensitive to the internal energy of the molecule. Theoretical simulations were performed by using the semiempirical self-consistent charge-density-functional tight-binding method. By running thousands of these simulations, the initial conditions encountered in the experiment were properly taken into account, including the systematic dependencies on the internal (thermal) energy. This systematic approach, not affordable with first-principle methods, provides a good overall description of the complex molecular dynamics observed in the experiment and shows good promise for applicability to larger molecules or clusters, thus opening the door to systematic investigations of complex dynamical processes occurring in radiation damage.

We report an experimental and theoretical study of single-molecule inner-shell photoemission measured over an extended range of photon energies. The vibrational intensity ratios I(ν=1)/I(ν=0) from the C 1s photoelectron spectra of carbon monoxide, although mostly determined by the bond length change upon ionization, are shown to be affected also by photoelectron recoil and by scattering from the neighboring oxygen atom. Static-exchange density functional theory (DFT) is used to encompass all these effects in a unified theoretical treatment. The ab initio calculations show that the vibrational ratio as a function of the photoelectron momentum is sensitive to both the ground-state internuclear distance and its contraction upon photoionization. We present a proof-of-principle application of DFT calculations as a quantitative structural analysis tool for extracting the dynamic and static molecular geometry parameters simultaneously.

The photoionization of free Xe clusters is investigated by angle-resolved time-of-flight photoelectron spectroscopy. The measurements probe the evolution of the photoelectron angular distribution parameter as a function of photon energy and cluster size. While the overall photon-energy-dependent behavior of the photoelectrons from the clusters is very similar to that of the free atoms, distinct differences in the angular distribution point at cluster-size-dependent effects. Multiple scattering calculations trace their origin to elastic photoelectron scattering.

X-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) providing ultrashort intense pulses of X-rays have proven to be excellent tools to investigate the dynamics of radiation-induced dissociation and charge redistribution in molecules and nanoparticles. Coincidence techniques, in particular multi-ion time-of-flight (TOF) coincident experiments, can provide detailed information on the photoabsorption, charge generation, and Coulomb explosion events. Here we review several such recent experiments performed at the SPring-8 Angstrom Compact free electron LAser (SACLA) facility in Japan, with iodomethane, diiodomethane, and 5-iodouracil as targets. We demonstrate how to utilize the momentum-resolving capabilities of the ion TOF spectrometers to resolve and filter the coincidence data and extract various information essential in understanding the time evolution of the processes induced by the XFEL pulses.
