We demonstrated an all-fiber Er-doped Mamyshev oscillator with short pulse duration and high peak power. Through the dispersion management technique and accumulation of sufficient nonlinear phase shift, stable pulses with repetition rate of 6.55 MHz, 20-dB spectral bandwidth of 78.2 nm, pulse duration of 72 fs and peak power of 86 kW were achieved directly without external compression. Simulations have been performed to show the direct generation of ultrafast laser pulse from the Mamyshev oscillator based on the extended nonlinear Schrdinger equation. To the best of our knowledge, this is by far the shortest pulse duration, the highest experimental peak power Er-doped Mamyshev oscillator.

Polarization characteristics are significantly crucial for tasks in various fields, including the remote sensing of oceans and atmosphere, as well as the polarization LIDAR and polarimetric imaging in scattering media. Many polarimetric metrics (such as the degree of polarization, polarization angle diattenuation, and depolarization) have been proposed to enrich the characterization and improve the task performance in scattering media; yet, their related efficacy is limited, especially in high turbidity conditions. The indices of polarimetric purity (IPPs), including three different depolarization metrics, have been successfully applied to biomedical diagnosis. However, it is still debatable whether IPPs also are excellent metrics for identifying or distinguishing objects in scattering media. In this work, we seek to provide physical insights into the application of distinguishing and identifying different objects via IPPs. Imaging experiments are devised and performed on different objects, e.g., metals and plastics, under different turbidity levels, demonstrating the superiority of IPPs as excellent metrics for object identification in scattering conditions. The experimental results show that the IPPs images can enhance image contrast and improve discriminability, as well as break the limitation of traditional intensity-model imaging techniques when further combined with dehazing or enhancing algorithms. Importantly, as the used Mueller matrix (MM) and the related IPPs can also be obtained via other types of MM polarimeters (e.g., PolSAR and MM microscopy), the proposed solution and idea have potential for such applications as biomedical imaging, photogrammetry, and remote sensing.

We report on a low-noise, robust, all-polarization-maintaining (PM) mode-locked Er-doped fiber ring laser, indicating an effective method to further optimize the phase noise by adjusting the pump power. Integrated from 10 Hz to 10 MHz, the optimized timing jitter is as low as 269 fs with an amplitude noise of 0.028%. The experimental results agree well with the prediction in a series of simulations and numerical analyses, revealing that the phase noise performance is improved by rebalancing the interactions between the gain, dispersion, and nonlinearity, and the high pulse energy and short pulse duration contribute to a reduction in the phase noise until the nonlinearities begin to neutralize the benefit. Consisting of a packaged semiconductor saturable absorber mirror and an all-PM-fiber ring structure, the laser performs well with reliable output pulses in vibrational environments, and most of the technical noise from external disturbances is also suppressed.

Due to their excellent performance, superhydrophobic materials have received a lot of attention and research in friction reduction and wear resistance. However, the effect of different contact angles of superhydrophobicity on friction and wear properties has not been thoroughly studied. In this paper, a nanosecond pulsed laser was used to realize the preparation of a superhydrophobic nickel surface, which indeed reduced the coefficient of friction but also increased the wear volume when compared to the unprocessed surface. As the contact angle of the superhydrophobic nickel surface increased, the coefficient of friction gradually increased, and the wear volume decreased gradually in superhydrophobic nickel surfaces. When the laser energy density was 1 J/cm2, the contact angle was 150.3° and the minimum friction coefficient was 0.4. However, when the laser energy density was 50 J/cm2, the maximum contact angle was 156.4° and the minimum wear volume was 4.23 × 107 μm3. The friction direction also influenced the tribological properties of the superhydrophobic-textured surface. This method makes it possible to process superhydrophobic surfaces with more suitable friction and wear properties.

Advanced sensors and signal processing algorithms are significant for the use of remotely-operated vehicles and autonomous underwater vehicles. The distance/length measurement is the basis of many sensing functions, including positioning, tracking, surface reconstruction, and pose determination. Optical-based ranging sensors have been proven as a promising tool and obtain up to micrometer-level accuracy when combined with dual-comb interference. Applying this approach to underwater scenarios is feasible, but one must handle the issue that the ranging signal is significantly affected by environmental disturbances and system noises. However, it has been rarely reported that processing algorithms are tailored to the dual-comb signal to improve the quality of measuring signals. This article presents an enhanced underwater dual-comb ranging (DCR) solution via an improved variational mode decomposition (VMD). Specifically, we design a fitness function considering desired dual-comb interferogram characteristics. Accordingly, we optimize vital parameters and decompose the interested ranging signal to ensure final interferogram quality. Experiments verify that our method is superior to others and can improve the signal-to-noise ratio and restore the Gaussian-like shape of interferograms simultaneously. To the best of the authors knowledge, it is the first time DCR is boosted via VMD, and answers the question about interferogram shaping. The proposed solution may find important applications in ranging and imaging tasks underwater, as well as extend their working range and robustness against non-ideal environments.

Underwater distance/length sensing serves a fundamental function and plays a crucial role in a wide range of applications, including topography and geomorphology in remote sensing. Advanced light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems and algorithms are significant for underwater tasks, such as objection positing, target searching, and rescuing. In this article, we propose a dual-comb interferometer-based LiDAR system to achieve accurate underwater absolute distance measurement. Specifically, the system applies a well-designed pulse coding strategy that significantly expands the nonambiguity range (NAR) for underwater distance measurements, allowing for precise long-distance measurements in a single attempt. Besides, we introduce a correction process to handle the water group refractive index problem. Compared with reference values, experimental results show that the range fluctuation is within $\pm 15~\mu $ m at a 12 m measurement range, and the Allan deviation is $0.62~\mu $ m over an average time of 100 s. In practice, this LiDAR solution with a micrometer-level precision is promising for various applications in ocean engineering.
