Microplastic (MP) pollution has emerged as a significant environmental concern, with exposure to it linked to numerous negative consequences for both ecosystems and humans. To tackle this complex issue, innovative technologies that are capable of effectively eliminating MPs from the environment are necessary. In this review, we examined a variety of bare and composite photocatalysts employed in the degradation process. An in-depth assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of each catalyst was presented. Additionally, we explored the photocatalytic mechanisms and factors influencing degradation. The review concludes by addressing the current challenges and outlining future research priorities, which will help guide efforts to mitigate MP contamination.
Indigo is a plant dye that has been used as an important dye by various ancient civilizations throughout history. Today, due to environmental and health concerns, plant indigo is re-entering the market. Strobilanthescusia (Nees) Kuntze is the most widely used species in China for indigo preparation. However, other species under Strobilanthes have a similar feature. In this work, 12 Strobilanthes spp. were analyzed using electrochemical fingerprinting technology. Depending on their electrochemically active molecules, they can be quickly identified by fingerprinting. In addition, the fingerprint obtained under different conditions can be used to produce scattered patter and heatmap. These patterns make plant identification more convenient. Since the electrochemically active components in plants reflect the differences at the gene level to some extent, the obtained electrochemical fingerprints are further used for the discussion of phylogenetics.
The use of electrochemical fingerprints for plant identification is an emerging application in biosensors. In this work, Taxodium ascendens, T. distichum, T. mucronatum, and 18 of their hybrid progenies were collected for this purpose. This is the first attempt to use electrochemical fingerprinting for the identification of plant hybrid progeny. Electrochemical fingerprinting in the leaves of Taxodium spp. was recorded under two conditions. The results showed that the electrochemical fingerprints of each species and progeny possessed very suitable reproducibility. These electrochemical fingerprints represent the electrochemical behavior of electrochemically active substances in leaf tissues under specific conditions. Since these species and progenies are very closely related to each other, it is challenging to identify them directly using a particular electrochemical fingerprinting. Therefore, electrochemical fingerprints measured under different conditions were used to perform pattern recognition. We can identify different species and progenies by locating the features in different pattern maps. We also performed a phylogenetic study with data from electrochemical fingerprinting. The results proved that the electrochemical classification results and the relationship between them are closely related.
Bimetallic MOFs have recently emerged as promising materials for wastewater treatment based on advanced oxidation processes. Herein, a new bimetallic MOF (FeCu-MOF) was fabricated by hydrothermal process. The structural, morphological, compositional and physicochemical properties of the as-synthesized bimetallic FeCu-MOF were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, BET, and XPS. TEM and XPS confirmed the homogeneous distribution of CuO2 nanoparticles in the as-synthesized materials. The result of wastewater treatment indicated that 100% of MB was removed by 6.0 mM PMS activated with 0.6 g/L of FeCu-MOF in 30 min. The high catalytic performance of FeCu-MOF was probably due to the accelerated electron and mass transfer resulting from the existence of a homogeneous distribution of unsaturated metal sites and an abundant mesoporous structure. The obtained results from the competitive quenching tests demonstrated that sulfate radicals (SO4•−) were the major species responsible for MB oxidation. In addition, hydroxyl (·OH) and singlet oxygen (1O2) also had a nonnegligible role in the MB removal. Interestingly, the addition of acetate ion (CHCOO−) promoted the removal of MB while other anions (including NO2−, H2PO4−, SO42−, HPO42−, and HCO3−) inhibited the MB removal. Furthermore, a possible mechanism based on both heterogeneous and homogeneous activation of PMS was proposed, along with the MB degradation mechanism.
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has received increasing attention from researchers since it was first discovered on rough silver electrode surfaces in 1974 and has promising applications in life sciences, food safety, and environmental monitoring. The discovery of graphene has stirred considerable waves in the scientific community, attracting widespread attention in theoretical research and applications. Graphene exhibits the properties of a semi-metallic material and has also been found to have Raman enhancement effects such as in metals. At the same time, it quenches the fluorescence background and improves the ratio of a Raman signal to a fluorescence signal. However, graphene single-component substrates exhibit only limited SERS effects and are difficult to use for trace detection applications. The common SERS substrates based on noble metals such as Au and Ag can produce strong electromagnetic enhancement, which results in strong SERS signals from molecules adsorbed on the surface. However, these substrates are less stable and face the challenge of long-term use. The combination of noble metals and graphene to obtain composite structures was an effective solution to the problem of poor stability and sensitivity of SERS substrates. Therefore, graphene-based SERS has been a popular topic within the last decade. This review presents a statistically based analysis of graphene-based SERS using bibliometrics. Journal and category analysis were used to understand the historical progress of the topic. Geographical distribution was used to understand the contribution of different countries and institutions to the topic. In addition, this review describes the different directions under this topic based on keyword analysis and keyword co-occurrence. The studies on this topic do not show a significant divergence. The researchers’ attention has gradually shifted from investigating materials science and chemistry to practical sensing applications. At the end of the review, we summarize the main contents of this topic. In addition, several perspectives are presented based on bibliometric analysis.
