The surrounding rock control technology of mining roadways in large inclination seams with a weak structural plane in the roof is one of the most challenging fields in underground roadway support. In view of the serious deformation of the surrounding rock of the transportation roadway in the 1201 working face of a mine, the deformation and failure characteristics and instability mechanism of the surrounding rock of the roadway are analysed. The self-stability mechanical model of the roof block structure of the roadway with a large inclination under the support effect is established, and the support concept of “high pre-stressed asymmetric” and the combined support method of bolts, wire mesh, and cables are proposed. The rationality of the supporting scheme is verified by numerical simulation. The results show that: compared with bolt and wire mesh support, the maximum shear displacement of the roof’s weak layer under the combined support of bolt, wire meshes, and cable before and after mining is reduced by 86.78% and 83%, respectively, and the maximum total displacement of surrounding rock surface is reduced by 49.22% and 37.1%, respectively. The field monitoring results show that the combined support scheme can effectively control the deformation of the surrounding rock.

The construction of an underground coal mine reservoir plays an essential role in the ecological environment of arid areas. The moisture content and loading angle inclination significantly impact the strength and stability of the safety coal pillar of underground reservoirs. Water-bearing coal was investigated under a coupled compression–shear load using inclined uniaxial compression tests on coal samples with varying water contents (ω = 0%, 2.42%, 5.53%, 7.55%, and 10.08%) and acoustic emission (AE) technology. The weakening mechanism of the mechanical property parameters and the crack evolution law, combined with the characteristics of the stress–strain curve, the cumulative AE count, and the cumulative AE energy methods, were used. Therefore, the evolution law of the coal’s crack closure (CC) threshold, crack initiation (CI) threshold, and crack damage (CD) threshold was analyzed. The results indicate that coal samples’ peak stress and elastic modulus decreased when the water content or inclination angle increased. Peak shear stress decreased as the water content rose, and the overall characteristics gradually rose as the inclination angle increased. The exception was when the ratio was 10.08%; when the inclination angle was 0°, the failure mode of the coal sample progressively changed from tension failure (ω = 0%, 2.42%) to tension–shear composite failure (ω = 5.53%), and finally to shear failure (ω = 7.55%, 10.08%). When the inclination angle was 5°, the coal sample was dominated by tension–shear composite failure at any moisture content. When the inclination angle was 10° and 15°, the coal specimens showed shear failure at any moisture content. The evolution law of tensile and shear cracks determined by AE characteristic parameters was consistent with the macrofracture characteristics of the coal specimens. When the water content or inclination angle increased, the crack closure threshold, crack initiation threshold, and damage threshold of the coal samples decreased. Therefore, these results show that their peak stress ratio does not depend on the water content or inclination angle.

Backfilling in underground mining is a widely adopted technique, often employing cement-based or geopolymer materials. However, the high cost and logistical challenges associated with these materials in remote mining locations necessitate alternative solutions. Loess materials offer a viable option for reducing production expenses and mitigating environmental impact. Despite this, the mechanical properties of loess-based cemented materials have been insufficiently investigated. This study introduces a novel slag-loess-based cemented backfill material. A three-dimensional model of the backfill material was constructed using Avizo software, and a numerical calculation model, incorporating the actual three-dimensional geometry of aggregate particles, was developed using PFC3D software. The influence of confining pressure σ3, curing temperature TC, and age TA on the crack evolution, force chain evolution, and particle failure characteristics during the loading process of the cemented backfill material was systematically examined. Results demonstrate that increasing confining pressure σ3 accelerates crack initiation and propagation, concurrently increasing the maximum value of the dominant force chain within the specimen at each stage. An increase in age TA has a limited effect on the proportion and quantity of final tensile-shear cracks, though it does intensify the specimen’s ultimate shear failure tendency. At lower curing temperatures (5°C), a significant impact on crack formation is observed, with this effect diminishing as curing temperature TC increases. The macroscopic failure modes of the specimens, across varying temperatures, predominantly exhibit shear failure.

The effective discrimination of aquiclude mining stability is one of the important indexes for the feasibility judgement of water-conserved mining. Based on the mining-induced deformation characteristics of weakly cemented aquiclude and the water level change of weakly cemented aquifer in northwest China, a mechanical model of mining stability of weakly cemented aquiclude is established, and the mining instability criterion of weakly cemented aquiclude and its influencing factors are analyzed. The results show that the weakly cemented aquiclude has strong plastic deformation ability and mainly undergoes bending deformation during coal mining. Considering the mining-induced bending deformation of weakly cemented aquiclude and the groundwater pressure variation of the weakly cemented aquifer, the expressions of the deflection, stress components, and strain components of weakly cemented aquiclude are derived. Furthermore, the stress instability and strain instability criteria of the weakly cemented aquiclude are proposed. The influences of aquiclude thickness, elastic modulus, Poisson’s ratio, groundwater level, coalface length, and longwall panel length on the mining stability of weakly cemented aquiclude are analyzed. The research results are applied to the feasibility judgment of water-conserved mining in Xinjiang Ehuobulake Coal Mine, and the validity of the mining stability criterion of weakly cemented aquiclude is verified.

Non-parallel overlapping flaws widely exist in engineering rock mass. Understanding their crack initiation and energy evolution characteristics is of great significance to ensure the stability of rock engineering. Based on the existing experiments, the influence of flaw inclination angles (β) on the crack initiation and energy evolution characteristics of rock samples with non-parallel overlapping flaws was studied by numerical simulation. The results show that (1) the uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus and crack initiation stress increase with the increase of flaw angle. (2) The boundary energy, strain energy and dissipated energy under peak stress increase with the increase of flaw angle; the dissipated energy increases the most. (3) With the increase of flaw angle, the tension stress zone is transferred to the flaw tip, and the zone is reduced gradually; the maximum tensile stress and the tension stress concentration decrease. (4) In the crack initiation stage, the influence of a lower flaw inclination angle (β ≤ 60°) on the lateral displacement field of the sample is higher than that of a high flaw inclination angle (β = 75°).

Numerical simulation is very useful for understanding the hydraulic fracture (HF) re-orientation mechanism from artificial weaknesses. In this paper, the UDEC T-W (Trigon–Weibull distribution) modeling method is adopted to simulate the hydraulic fracturing process in heterogeneous rocks. First, the reliability of this method is validated against previous laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. Then the effects of fluid rate, fluid viscosity, perforation angle and natural fracture (NF) on the HF re-orientation process in heterogeneous rocks are studied independently. The results show that the HF re-orientation process depends on the combined effect of these factors. The HF re-orientation distance increases significantly, the final HF re-orientation trajectory becomes more complex and the guiding effect of perforation on the HF propagation path is more evident with the increase of fluid rate, fluid viscosity, and perforation angle if the hydraulic fracturing is performed in relatively heterogeneous rocks, while the differential stress is the main influencing factor and is more likely to dictate the HF propagation path if the rocks become relatively homogeneous. However, increasing the fluid viscosity and fluid rate can attenuate the impact of differential stress and can promote HF propagation along the perforation direction. Besides, NFs are also the important factor affecting HF re-orientation and induce secondary HF re-orientation in some cases in heterogeneous rocks.
