Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) was used for detecting Rhodamine B (RB) which is often added illegally to chili powder. Based on density functional theory, the Raman spectrum of RB was calculated and characteristic peaks of RB were assigned to the corresponding vibrational modes. RB was detected utilizing paper-based SERS substrates which were fabricated via a liquid–liquid interface-mediated self-assembly technique. Meanwhile, with simple sample pretreatment, the detection limit could reach 10−6 g g−1 for RB in chili powder (5 × 10−7 g mL−1 in extraction agent). Within the concentration range from 10−2 g g−1 to 10−6 g g−1, Raman intensity follows a certain function in relation to the concentration of RB. The recovery of this method ranges from 96.4% to 108.9%, which gives rapid and reliable quantitative detection of RB in chili powder. Therefore, the proposed SERS method is suitable for on-site detection and analysis of RB in chili powder.
We demonstrate a high-power laser system with a high-quality near-field beam by using a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (SLM). An efficient spatial beam shaping algorithm is discussed which can improve the output nearfield beam quality effectively. Both small-signal and large-signal amplification situation of the laser are considered in the beam shaping algorithm. The experimental results show that the near field fluence modulation of output is improved from 1.99:1 to 1.26:1 by using the liquid-crystal SLM. Obvious uniform spatial fluence distribution and near-field beam quality improvement are observed.

A transparent SERS platform was fabricated via the gel-trapping method coupled with a liquid/liquid interface self-assembly technique. We employed gold nanorods as the building blocks for interface self-assembly because of their strong localized surface plasmons upon excitation by infrared radiation. Based on a “top cover” configuration, this transparent SERS platform endows high signal reproducibility for directly detecting liquid samples by confining the sample droplet into a regular shape. The Au NR PDMS platform was able to directly detect crystal violet in aqueous solutions down to 10 ppb level with high enhancement factor (0.87 × 105) and signal uniformity (RSD = 3.9%). Furthermore, SERS-based anti-fungal agent detection on a fish scale was demonstrated by simply covering the fish scale with a tailored GNRs PDMS film. The experimental results clearly show that the Au NR PDMS SERS platform has great potential for on-site real time detection of contaminants in water as well as on curved surfaces.
The correlations between stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) characteristics of perfluoro-compound (PFC) and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) and their chemical structure are analyzed in detail and a series of new PFC and PFPE are reported. In the Nd:YAG laser system, the absorption coefficient, optical breakdown threshold (OBT), SBS threshold, and Brillouin frequency shift of new media such as FC-87, FC-43, HT-55, and DET are measured. Parameters such as gain coefficient, Brillouin linewidth, and phonon lifetime are calculated. The results demonstrate their good SBS properties: the absorption coefficients are below and OBTs are above . These media also exhibit a series of unique physicochemical properties, i.e., high heat-resistance, high oxidation stability, good chemical inertness, and insulation properties. The discovery of new media not only diversifies SBS medium, but also improves the performance of the SBS system, thereby laying a good foundation for the application of a SBS phase conjugation mirror in a high-power laser system.
A new technique for generating high energy sub-400 picosecond laser pulses is presented in this paper. The temporally super-Gaussian-shaped laser pulses are used as light source. When the forward pump is reflected by the rear window of SBS cell, the frequency component that fulfills Brillouin frequency shift in its sideband spectrum works as a seed and excites SBS, which results in efficient compression of the incident pump pulse. First the pulse compression characteristics of 20th-order super-Gaussian temporally shaped pulses with 5 ns duration are analyzed theoretically. Then experiment is carried out with a narrow-band high power Nd:glass laser system at the double-frequency and wavelength of 527 nm which delivers 5 ns super-Gaussian temporally shaped pulses with single pulse energy over 10 J. FC-40 is used as the active SBS medium for its brief phonon lifetime and high power capacity. In the experiment, the results agree well with the numerical calculations. With pump energy of 5.36J, the compression of pulse duration from 5 ns to 360 ps is obtained. The output energy is 3.02 J and the peak-power is magnified 8.3 times. Moreover, the compressed pulse shows a high stability because it is initiated by the feedback of rear window rather than the thermal noise distributing inside the medium. This technique of generating high energy hundred picosecond laser pulses has simple structure and is easy to operate, and it also can be scaled to higher energy pulse compression in the future. Meanwhile, it should also be taken into consideration that in such a nonfocusing scheme, the noise-initiated SBS would increase the distortion on the wavefront of Stokes beam to some extent, and the pump energy should be controlled below the threshold of noise-initiated SBS.
