The ball mill is a rotating cylindrical vessel with grinding media inside, which is responsible for breaking the ore particles. Grinding media play an important role in the comminution of mineral ores in these mills. This work reviews the application of balls in mineral processing as a function of the materials used to manufacture them and the mass loss, as influenced by three basic wear mechanisms: impact, abrasion, and corrosion. The effect of grinding media geometries and density on the mill performance was also reviewed to determine what the research has recommended as the most suitable grinding media for different grinding applications. Although considerable work has been carried out in that area, the influence of grinding media shape on the liberation of minerals, as well as the effect of various mill conditions on the performance of mixed grinding media shapes, are still poorly understood. Thus, the review opens up opportunities for further research to improve the grinding processes, especially considering that even a slight improvement in the process efficiency significantly reduces the production costs.

Comminution is a very important and result-determining step in mineral processing. This is because further downstream processes in the beneficiation chain depend entirely on it. Comminution includes the blasting, crushing, and grinding of ore to liberate valuable mineral particles. It consumes most of the energy used in mineral processing plants with grinding using up to 50% of the provided energy. Tumbling mills are an old technology that is still commonly used for grinding. One of the most used tumbling mills is the ball mill. This paper reviews different types of grinding media that have been developed and improved over the years and their properties. Also reviewed are the effects of grinding media on various aspects such as energy consumption, mill efficiency, minerals liberation and grinding rate. A comparison of the grinding media is given together with the knowledge gaps that still need to be bridged to improve the quality and performance of grinding media used in ball mills. Despite various research conducted on ball mills, the grinding process is still a very energy inefficient process. This creates a great opportunity for further research to improve the process because just a slight improvement in the process efficiency significantly reduces the production costs and provides a lot of environmental benefits.

Manganese alloys are essential to the steel-making industry, where they are primarily produced in submerged arc furnaces (SAFs) using a mixture of manganese ores, slags, and carbon-based reductants. However, this production process is one of the leading sources of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global warming and conflict with the International Energy Agency's Sustainable Development Goals targeting net-zero emissions by 2050. This review critically examines the key process variables, including slag composition, reductant type, raw material properties, particle size, and operating temperature, and their influence on environmental performance. Emerging technologies aimed at decarbonizing Mn-alloy production are evaluated in terms of technical maturity and scalability. Among these, biocarbon substitution, particularly the use of charcoal in place of coke, has demonstrated the highest commercial readiness, with several facilities operating at full scale. Hydrogen-based reduction and plasma arc furnaces offer promising long-term solutions but require substantial infrastructure development. Integrated approaches such as the Duplex FeMn-DRI, HAlMan, and AlloyStream processes show potential for circular resource utilization, though most remain at the pilot scale. Overall, biocarbon-based methods currently represent the most viable pathway for near-term decarbonization, while continued innovation and investment are essential to advance other technologies toward industrial implementation.

Titanium is one of the most abundant metals with superior properties such as excellent mechanical properties, high strength-to-weight ratio, and oxidation and corrosion resistance. However, it is commercially expensive to produce; hence, its use is limited. Currently, the Kroll process remains the most commercially exploited to produce titanium. Therefore, this paper thoroughly reviews some other proposed and developing thermo-reduction methods using the two main precursors titanium dioxide (TiO2) and titanium chloride (TiCl4) together with the environmental impacts they cause. The exorbitant production cost and environmental issues have resulted in enormous research and development to innovate more sustainable methods of titanium production. The various processes were comprehensively analyzed to assess whether they have the potential to expand to be economically viable. From this review, it is apparent that most of the methods still require further research to scale them up to an industrial and commercial level. Recent developments including the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Ti (CSIR-Ti), Titanium Reduction Oxide (TiRO), Preform Reduction Process (PRP), and hydrogen-assisted magnesiothermic reduction (HAMR) processes are auspicious for producing high-purity titanium sustainably.

In this study, the effects of truncated ellipsoids and cubes on the particle size distribution of a UG2 ore were compared to the spheres using the response surface methodology for experimental design, modeling, and optimization. The response surface methodology demonstrated that it can be useful in optimizing grinding operations. It provides lenses to see and analyze the behavior of the ball filling, interstitial filling, and % solids parameters which are complex and interactive, and their effects on the production of the desired product (−75 µm) for different grinding media. Spherical grinding media outperformed truncated ellipsoids and cubes, producing the highest amount of the desired size class (82.58%), followed by 80.41% for truncated ellipsoids and 77.07% for cubes. Spheres also consumed the least power followed by cubes and lastly truncated ellipsoids. The differences in optimal grinding conditions were attributed to different contact mechanisms, surface area, and load behavior of the grinding media.
