The objective of this study was to identify the major socio-demographic, health, and environmental determinants of stunting among children aged 0–59 months from the Tete province (Mozambique) and offering useful information for future healthcare strategies and interventions. A case-control study was conducted among 282 (162 boys; 120 girls) children under five years of age from the central region of Mozambique between 1 May and 3 June 2014. Children with stunting (HAZ < −2 SD according to the WHO Child Growth Standards in 2006) were considered as cases and those who had a Z-score < −2 SD were considered as controls. We collected data related to mothers and children and their environment, and they were assessed in two groups to find a possible association. The software used for data analysis was the SPSS®(version, 21.0) using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, chi-square analyses, bivariate comparisons, and stepwise multiple logistic regression analysis. The results showed that birth weight, mother’s educational status, maternal occupation, living in a rural area, family size, number of children under five years of age in the household, cooking with charcoal, inhabiting wooden or straw housing or housing without proper floors, overall duration of breastfeeding as well as duration of exclusive breastfeeding, and time of initiation of complementary feeding were significantly related to stunting. Thus, appropriate nutritional intervention programmes considering these determinants and the dissemination of knowledge at the population level related to undernutrition are necessary to ameliorate the children´s nutritional status.

Currently, myofascial pain has become one of the main problems in healthcare systems. Research into its causes and the structures related to it may help to improve its management. Until some years ago, all the studies were focused on muscle alterations, as trigger points, but recently, fasciae are starting to be considered a new, possible source of pain. This systematic review has been conducted for the purpose of analyze the current evidence of the muscular/deep fasciae innervation from a histological and/or immunohistochemical point of view. A literature search published between 2000 and 2021 was made in PubMed and Google Scholar. Search terms included a combination of fascia, innervation, immunohistochemical, and different immunohistochemical markers. Of the 23 total studies included in the review, five studies were performed in rats, four in mice, two in horses, ten in humans, and two in both humans and rats. There were a great variety of immunohistochemical markers used to detect the innervation of the fasciae; the most used were Protein Gene Marker 9.5 (used in twelve studies), Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (ten studies), S100 (ten studies), substance P (seven studies), and tyrosine hydroxylase (six studies). Various areas have been studied, with the thoracolumbar fascia being the most observed. Besides, the papers highlighted diversity in the density and type of innervation in the various fasciae, going from free nerve endings to Pacini and Ruffini corpuscles. Finally, it has been observed that the innervation is increased in the pathological fasciae. From this review, it is evident that fasciae are well innerved, their innervation have a particular distribution and precise localization and is composed especially by proprioceptors and nociceptors, the latter being more numerous in pathological situations. This could contribute to a better comprehension and management of pain.

Background: Frailty is an aging-associated state of increased vulnerability, which raises the risk of adverse outcomes. Chronic kidney disease is associated with higher prevalence of frailty. Our aim was to estimate frailty prevalence in a hemodialysis population and its influence on short-term outcomes. Design: Observational prospective longitudinal study of 277 prevalent hemodialysis patients. Frailty was estimated through the Edmonton Frail Scale (EFS). Demographic and clinical data, comorbidity index, and laboratory parameters were recorded. A 29-month follow-up was conducted on mortality, including hospitalization, and visits to hospital emergency services in the first 12 months of this period. Results: According to the EFS, 82 patients (29.6%) were frail, 53 (19.1%) were vulnerable, and 142 (51.3%) were non-frail. During follow-up, 58.5% frail patients, 30.2% vulnerable, and 16.2% non-frail ones died (p < .005). In the analysis of survival using an adjusted Cox model, a higher hazard of mortality was observed in frail than in non-frail patients (HR 2.34; 95% CI 1.39–3.95; p = .001). During follow-up the hospitalization rate was 852 episodes/1000 patient-years for frail patients, 784 episodes/1000 patient-years for vulnerable patients, and 417 episodes/1000 patient-years for non-frail patients (p = .0005). The incidence ratio of visits to emergency services was 3216, 1735, and 1545 visits/1000 patient-years for each group (p < .001). Conclusions: Hemodialysis patients present high frailty prevalence. Frailty is associated with poor short-term outcomes and higher rates of mortality, visits to hospital emergency services, and hospitalization.
