Christo Nanev Nanev is Professor Emeritus in Rostislaw Kaischew Institute of Physical Chemistry at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (and former Director of the same Institute, from 1993 until 2008). He graduated from the Chemical Faculty of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski” in 1964. Before his graduation, he specialized (for four months) in the growth of crystal whiskers at the Institute of Physics, Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences, Prague. Christo Nanev received his PhD in crystal growth under the supervision of Professor Rostislaw Kaischew in 1973. In 1990, he became Doctor of Science in Physical Chemistry. His experimental and theoretical research is in the fields of crystal nucleation and growth, protein crystallization, semiconductor thin films, metal electro-crystallization, surface levelling during deposition of galvanic coatings, and the growth of quartz crystals. His pictures of insulin crystals were published in college-level textbooks on Biochemistry. Christo Nanev is a member of the Advisory Board of Crystal Research and Technology (John Wiley & Sons), and fellow of the Humboldt Union in Bulgaria. He has received three awards from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. As a principal investigator in the first Bulgarian space experiment (Crystal-Pirin, 1983), he sent a probe into Space and was awarded with the ‘Interkosmos’ medal.
