Due to the lack of efficient bioelectronic interfaces, the communication between biology and electronics has become a great challenge, especially in constructing bioelectronic sensing. As natural polysaccharide biomaterials, chitosan-based hydrogels exhibit the advantages of flexibility, biocompatibility, mechanical tunability, and stimuli sensitivity, and could serve as an excellent interface for bioelectronic sensors. Based on the fabrication approaches, interaction mechanisms, and bioelectronic communication modalities, this review divided chitosan-based hydrogels into four types, including electrode-based hydrogels, conductive materials conjugated hydrogels, ionically conductive hydrogels, and redox-based hydrogels. To introduce the enhanced performance of bioelectronic sensors, as a complementary alternative, the incorporation of nanoparticles and redox species in chitosan-based hydrogels was discussed. In addition, the multifunctional properties of chitosan-based composite hydrogels enable their applications in biomedicine (e.g., smart skin patches, wood healing, disease diagnosis) and food safety (e.g., electrochemical sensing, smart sensing, artificial bioelectronic tongue, fluorescence sensors, surface-enhanced Raman scattering). We believe that this review will shed light on the future development of chitosan-based biosensing hydrogels for micro-implantable devices and human–machine interactions, as well as potential applications in medicine, food, agriculture, and other fields.

The modified chitosan microspheres (CM) were prepared by inverse suspension crosslinking and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A systematic study of the adsorption of nitrate and phosphate on CM was performed by varying the pH, the initial concentration, contact time, and adsorbent dosage. The experimental results showed that CM is an excellent adsorbent for the removal of nitrate and phosphate with an adsorption capacity of 32.15 mg g−1 and 33.90 mg g−1, respectively. An equilibrium isotherm study showed a very good fit with the Langmuir isotherm equation for the monolayer adsorption process. Kinetic parameters of the adsorption process indicated that it followed a pseudo-second order equation.

The selection and preparation of an electrode material is the core of capacitive deionization. In order to obtain a material with a good deionization properties, we have designed an environmentally-friendly and simple way of preparing biochar. In this work, biochar was prepared by a thermal-deposition method and after chemical modification it was characterized with a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The specific surface area of biochar modified by KOH is as high as 833.76 m2 g−1, but the specific surface area of the unmodified electrode material is only 126.43 m2 g−1. The electrochemical analysis (CV and EIS) of the biochar indicates that HC-800 has a lower charge transfer resistance and a higher specific capacitance, where the specific capacity of HC-800 reaches 120 F g−1. A CDI property analysis of HC-800 shows a better electrosorption capacity of 11.52 mg g−1 and better regeneration and cycling stability than CS-800. The desalination amount remains 87.23% after several cycles.
