Triggered by the explosion of mobile traffic, 5G (5th Generation) cellular network requires evolution to increase the system rate 1000 times higher than the current systems in 10 years. Motivated by this common problem, there are several studies to integrate mm-wave access into current cellular networks as multi-band heterogeneous networks to exploit the ultra-wideband aspect of the mm-wave band. The authors of this paper have proposed comprehensive architecture of cellular networks with mm-wave access, where mm-wave small cell basestations and a conventional macro basestation are connected to Centralized-RAN (C-RAN) to effectively operate the system by enabling power efficient seamless handover as well as centralized resource control including dynamic cell structuring to match the limited coverage of mm-wave access with high traffic user locations via user-plane/control-plane splitting. In this paper, to prove the effectiveness of the proposed 5G cellular networks with mm-wave access, system level simulation is conducted by introducing an expected future traffic model, a measurement based mm-wave propagation model, and a centralized cell association algorithm by exploiting the C-RAN architecture. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed network to realize 1000 times higher system rate than the current network in 10 years which is not achieved by the small cells using commonly considered 3.5 GHz band. Furthermore, the paper also gives latest status of mm-wave devices and regulations to show the feasibility of using mm-wave in the 5G systems

Over the past few years, with the rapid increase in the number of natural disasters, the need to provide smart emergency wireless communication services has become crucial. Unmanned aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have gained much attention as promising candidates due to their unprecedented capabilities and broad flexibility. In this paper, we investigate a UAV-based emergency wireless communication network for a post-disaster area. Our optimization problem aims to optimize the UAV’s flight trajectory to maximize the number of visited ground users during the flight period. Then, a dual cost-aware multi-armed bandit algorithm is adopted to tackle this problem under the limited available energy for both the UAV and ground users. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm could solve the optimization problem and maximize the achievable throughput under these energy constraints.

The technical exploration of safe automated driving has evolved from single vehicle intelligence to vehicular networking. Therefore, to a certain extent, the safety requirements have been translated into the requirements for network performance. Although Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication technologies have developed decades of years, from the Dedicated Short-Range Communication (DSRC) to the Long Term Evolution V2X (LTE-V2X), the introduction of millimeter wave (mmWave) in the 5G era will achieve an unprecedented leap in V2X performance by empowering multi-gigabit data transmission with ultra-low latency. Meanwhile, the emergence of Software Defined Networking (SDN) enables centralized network management and allows flexible scheduling of communication resources to match V2X capacities. Their benefits for vehicular networks have been revealed by plenty of studies respectively. Nevertheless, no researchers investigate their combination to improve the safety of automated driving, especially lack of scalable prototype systems for proof-of-concepts (PoCs), not to mention the field test with real traffic. In this paper, we firstly propose a novel architecture, i.e. software-defined dynamic mmWave V2X network, to support cooperative perception. And then, necessary hardware and software platforms are introduced to compose prototype systems. Step by step, we conduct PoCs from the indoors to the outdoors, which demonstrate the network functions, the prototype scalability and most importantly, the significant enhancement to the vehicle perception for safe automated driving.

We present a numerical study on a 2D array of plasmonic structures covered by a subwavelength film. We explain the origin of surface lattice resonances (SLRs) using the coupled dipole approximation and show that the diffraction-assisted plasmonic resonances and formation of bound states in the continuum (BICs) can be controlled by altering the optical environment. Our study shows that when the refractive index contrast Δn < −0.1, the SLR cannot be excited, while a significant contrast (Δn > 0.3) not only sustains plasmonic-induced resonances but also forms both symmetry-protected and accidental BICs. The results can aid the streamlined design of plasmonic lattices in studies on light–matter interactions and applications in biosensors and optoelectronic devices.

This paper presents the vision of 5G-MiEdge, a research project leveraging the benefits of merging MEC and mmWave technologies. Based on that vision, the most relevant use cases and services for the forthcoming Tokyo 2020 Olympics are proposed. The focus is on showing how integrating MEC and mmWave into the 5G network architecture can offer a much more effective system. That is achieved by means of an edge cloud and the introduction of an ultra-lean and inter-operable signaling, called `liquid control plane', capable of providing ubiquitous allocation of computation and communication resources, in an application-/user-centric framework. Finally standards-related aspects like the 5G-MiEdge impact on the ongoing 3GPP work and the services that compose the 5G phases are discussed.
