(1) The nutritional quality of strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch) fruits, among others, is largely maintained by the presence of soluble sugars and organic acids. As the primary products of photosynthesis, they are energy depots in plants, necessary for the construction of cell constituents, but also serve as precursors of aromatic compounds and signaling molecules. (2) In this study, fruits of 25 strawberry cultivars were qualitatively and quantitatively characterized concerning individual sugars and organic acids by HPLC, FT-ICR-MS, and MS imaging analysis. In addition, the total quality index (TQI), as a novel mathematical model, was used to compare all individual parameters evaluated to obtain a quantitative single score, as an indicator of overall fruit quality. (3) Regardless of a large number of cultivars and monitored parameters that were studded, several cultivars stood out in terms of selected primary metabolites, such as ‘Rumba’, ‘Jeny’, and ‘Sandra’, while the latter had the best TQI score. (4) Intercultivar variations in sugars and organic acids profiles, along with other bioactive compounds, should be considered for selection of promising cultivars with improved naturally occurring nutraceutical traits. Besides the search for a pleasant taste, increased awareness of healthy nutrition resulted in heightening consumer demand for high-quality fruit.

Phenolic compounds of 25 newly introduced strawberry cultivars were profiled using spectrophotometry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Total phenolic and anthocyanin content (TPC and TACY, respectively), as well as vitamin C, and concentrations of individual phenolic compounds in fruits were evaluated to identify the most promising cultivars according to their phenolic profile. The highest values of TPC, TACY, and vitamin C were recorded in ‘Premy’ (1.53 mg eq GA g−1 FW), ‘Sandra’ (30.60 mg eq Pg-3-g 100 g−1 FW), and ‘Laetitia’ (56.32 mg 100 g−1 FW), respectively. The DPPH and •OH radicals scavenging activity of fruit methanolic extracts was estimated using EPR spectroscopy. All cultivars are almost uniformly effective in the scavenging of •OH radical, while ‘Tea’, ‘Premy’, and ‘Joly’ were marked as highly potent cultivars (over 70%) in terms of DPPH-antiradical activity. Specific peroxidase activities were the highest in ‘Garda’, ‘Federica’, and ‘Rumba’ (0.11, 0.08, and 0.06 U mg−1 prot, respectively). ‘Laetitia’, ‘Joly’, ‘Arianna’, ‘Tea’, and ‘Mila’ cultivars were distinguished from others as the richest concerning almost all flavonoids and phenolic acids, including some other parameters of bioactivity. These cultivars could be recommended to consumers as functional fruit foods.

Remontant raspberry cultivars originally produce fruit in the upper part of primocanes in the fall, but if retained over winter, they can produce a second crop in the lower part of the floricanes the following spring. Maintaining remontant cultivars to yield twice during the cane’s growth cycle corresponds to a double-cropping system, which enables an increase in the total yield and the extension of the fruiting season. To date, there is little information on changes in fruit quality between primocane and floricane crops. The aim of this study was, therefore, to investigate variations in the content of sugars and organic acids, fruit weight, color and textural and sensorial attributes among five newly introduced remontant raspberry cultivars (‘Dafne’, ‘Kokanee’, ‘Paris’, ‘Versailles’ and ‘Primalba’) and the control cultivar ‘Enrosadira’. The specific aim was to evaluate how a double-cropping system in each cultivar may affect the variability in quality traits between primocane and floricane crops. The results showed a significant increase in fruit weight and individual and total sugar content in primocane crops, while significantly brighter red-colored and firmer fruits were observed in floricane crops. Cultivars did not differ from the control regarding total sugar content and sweetness index, while the content of individual sugars caused greater variations. The highest content of citric, malic and total acid (9.74, 1.42 and 11.25 mg 100 g−1 FW, respectively) were recorded in ‘Paris’, by which this cultivar was the only one distinguished from the control. ‘Dafne’ and ‘Versailles’ exhibited better internal and external fruit quality on primocanes, having significantly larger fruits (6.83 g and 6.37 g, respectively) and twice the increased sugar content. The lowest fruit weight was observed in ‘Kokanee’ for both primocane (4.63 g) and floricane (3.65 g) crops. ‘Kokanee’ and ‘Primalba’ also performed worse than the control for most sensory attributes in both seasons. Based on the analysis of the overall fruit quality linked to the appearance-, texture- and taste-related attributes that affect consumer preference, cultivars ‘Enrosadira’, ‘Versailles’ and ‘Dafne’ stood out, while ‘Paris’ showed high uniformity in fruit quality between crops, but scored the worst according to the total quality index.

Perennial ryegrass represents the most important forage grass, yet its generally low drought tolerance leads to reduced yields under water scarcity. Nevertheless, large intra- and inter-population variability could be a pool for selecting new drought-tolerant varieties. In this study we evaluated three populations (K-11, Exp population and Shandon) under semi-controlled conditions across four watering levels (100%, 70%, 50% and 30% of field water capacity), focusing on yield and key morphological and biochemical traits. Dry matter yield and root dry mass decreased in all populations under limited watering conditions. The highest biomass production in such conditions was observed in the Exp population, likely due to better root performance in the deeper soil layer. On the other hand, oxidative stress markers (MDA and H2O2) and water-soluble sugars, which indicated the best physiological status in cultivar K-11 under severe drought, did not lead to the highest DMY. These results show the importance of including multiple physiological and biochemical traits in breeding processes, with the aim of developing perennial ryegrass cultivars capable of withstanding prolonged and intense summer drought as a consequence of climate change.

The usage of photoselective anti-hail nets is a modern approach to protect crops from adverse climatic factors with additional beneficial effects on orchard performance. Therefore, this study explored the impact of photoselective nets (blue, red, pearl, and yellow net) and the black net on the microclimate, plant growth, yield, ripening time, and fruit quality attributes of the blueberry cultivar ‘Duke’. The Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density values were elevated under the pearl and yellow nets in both years studied. Average daily air temperatures did not differ between the nets in 2022, while a slight decrease was registered under the black net in 2023. The red net enhanced the average number of younger and total number of shoots per bush and also caused a notable increase in the fruit number and yield per bush, as well as fruit weight, compared to the other tested nets. The pearl net accelerated the onset of ripening in both years studied, while the blue and yellow net delayed ripening in 2022 and 2023, respectively. The blue net was distinguished by the increased blueness of fruit skin and total soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio, while individual sugar types and organic acids were more influenced by the season. The findings indicate that the red net performed the best in terms of most agronomic and biometrical fruit traits of the potted highbush blueberry cultivar ‘Duke’.
