Artificial intelligence and Automatic Identification Systems (AIS) play pivotal roles in intelligent maritime navigation for the modern maritime industry. Many artificial intelligence maritime applications based on AIS data have dramatically benefited traditional operations and managements in the field of maritime industry, and also provided state-of-the-art predictive analytics for vessel collisions and route optimization. However, the problem of modeling the interactions of vessels in complex waters still needs to be adequately addressed. In this paper, we focus on using spatiotemporal AIS data to model and forecast multiple vessel trajectories amid dynamic interaction patterns, and we propose a forecast model based on a novel neural network, namely a spatiotemporal multi-graph fusion network (STMGF-Net). The innovative STMGF-Net comprises three crucial modules. First, a Spatiotemporal graph construction module generates interaction graphs of various navigation modes, such as motions, risks, and attributes of vessels, which can comprehensively capture the diverse interrelationships among various vessels. Second, a multi-mode fusion module embeds and fuses the above interaction graphs into STMGF-Net. Finally, squeeze-and-excitation and temporal convolutional networks are introduced as Squeeze-and-excitation temporal convolutional modules to enhance STMGF-Net optimization and performance. to enhance the overall efficiency of the model significantly. Overall, the STMGF-Net can recognize complex spatiotemporal interaction patterns among neighboring vessels so as to capture and integrate these interaction features for achieving high-precision prediction performance in intelligent maritime navigation. In numerical experiments, three water areas of Zhoushan Islands, Yangshan Waters, and Yangtze River Waters are used as training and testing datasets. The results show that STMGF-Net is superior improved prediction errors of average and final distance with increase of 49.637% and 50.622% than classic and state-of-art graph neural networks. to classic and benchmark-graph neural networks.

In recent years, the prediction of ship trajectory based on automatic identification system (AIS) data has become an important area of research. Among the existing studies, most focus on a single ship to extract features and train models for trajectory prediction. However, in a real situation, AIS contains a variety of ships and trajectories that need a general model to serve various cases. Therefore, in this paper, we include an attentional mechanism to train a multi-trajectory prediction model. There are three major processes in our model. Firstly, we improve the traditional density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) algorithm and apply it to trajectory clustering. According to the clustering process, ship trajectories can be automatically separated by groups. Secondly, we propose a feature extraction method based on a hierarchical clustering method for a trajectory group. According to the extraction process, typical trajectories can be obtained for individual groups. Thirdly, we propose a multi-trajectory prediction model based on an attentional mechanism. The proposed model was trained using typical trajectories and tested using original trajectories. In the experiments, we chose nearby port waters as the target, which contain various ships and trajectories, to validate our model. The experimental results show that the mean absolute errors (MAEs) of the model in longitude (°) and latitude (°) compared with the baseline methods were reduced by 8.69% and 6.12%.

Accurately forecasting the fuel consumption of ships is critical for improving their energy efficiency. However, the environmental factors that affect ship fuel consumption have not been researched comprehensively, and most of the relevant studies continue to present efficiency and accuracy issues. In view of such problems, a time-series forecasting model of ship fuel consumption based on a novel regression analysis using broad learning system (BLS) was developed in this study. The BLS was compared to a diverse set of fuel consumption forecasting models based on time-series analyses and machine learning techniques, including autoregressive integrated moving average model with exogenous inputs (ARIMAX), support vector regression (SVR), recurrent neural network (RNN), long short-term memory network (LSTM), and extreme learning machines (ELM). In the experiment, two types of passenger roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) ship and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrierwere used as research objects to verify the proposed method’s generalizability, with data divided among two groups (RM, RB). The experimental results showed that the BLS model is the best choice to forecast fuel consumption in actual navigation, with mean absolute error (MAE) values of 0.0140 and 0.0115 on RM and RB, respectively. For the LPG carrier, it has also been proven that the forecast effect is improved when factoring the sea condition, with MAE reaching 0.0108 and 0.0142 under ballast and laden conditions, respectively. Furthermore, the BLS features the advantages of low computing complexity and short forecast time, making it more suitable for real-world applications. The results of this study can therefore effectively improve the energy efficiency of ships by reducing operating costs and emissions.

The precise prediction of ship fuel consumption (SFC) not only serves to enhance energy efficiency to benefit shipping enterprises but also to provide quantitative foundations to aid in carbon emission reduction and ecological environment protection. On the other hand, SFC-related data represent typical multi-source characteristics and heterogeneous features, which lead to several methodological issues (e.g., feature alignment and feature fusion) in SFC prediction. Therefore, this paper proposes a dual-attention parallel network named DAPNet to solve the above issues. Firstly, we design a parallel network structure containing two kinds of long short-term memory (LSTM) and improved temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) for time-series analysis tasks so that different source data can be applied to suitable networks. Secondly, a local attention mechanism is included in each single parallel network so as to improve the ability of feature alignment from different-scale training data. Finally, global attention is employed for the fusion of all parallel networks, which can enrich representation features and simultaneously enhance the performance of SFC prediction. In experiments, DAPNet is compared with 10 methods, including baseline and attention models. The comparison results show that DAPNet and several of its variants obtain the highest accuracy in SFC prediction.
