Biography

Giulia Piccirilli received her degree with honors in Biological Sciences from the University of Bologna, and her Specialty degree with honors in Microbiology and Virology from the University of Turin. She is a Biological Doctor at the Microbiology Unit, IRCCS St. Orsola Polyclinic, Bologna, Italy. Her diagnostic activity is focused on: 1) the diagnosis of respiratory viral infections and viral gastroenteritis in pediatric populations; 2) the diagnosis and monitoring of viral infections in patients at particular risk of complications, such as patients undergoing solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, in which infections can have dramatic results; 3) detection of mutations in the CMV genome associated with drug resistance to ganciclovir, valganciclovir, and foscarnet during antiviral treatment; and 4) the pre-natal and post-natal diagnosis of cytomegalovirus and rubella virus infections. Her scientific research is dedicated to: 1) the study of fetal brain damage in congenital CMV infection; 2) the detection of new markers for the prevention, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapy of congenital CMV infection; and 3) the study of CMV and EBV kinetics DNAemia in both plasma and whole blood, to determine the appropriateness of the blood compartment used for the surveillance and the clinical management (in terms of the optimal initiation of pre-emptive antiviral therapy and treatment duration) of CMV and EBV of transplant patients.
