One of the deadliest diseases, heart disease, claims millions of lives every year worldwide. The biomedical data collected by health service providers (HSPs) contain private information about the patient and are subject to general privacy concerns, and the sharing of the data is restricted under global privacy laws. Furthermore, the sharing and collection of biomedical data have a significant network communication cost and lead to delayed heart disease prediction. To address the training latency, communication cost, and single point of failure, we propose a hybrid framework at the client end of HSP consisting of modified artificial bee colony optimization with support vector machine (MABC-SVM) for optimal feature selection and classification of heart disease. For the HSP server, we proposed federated matched averaging to overcome privacy issues in this paper. We tested and evaluated our proposed technique and compared it with the standard federated learning techniques on the combined cardiovascular disease dataset. Our experimental results show that the proposed hybrid technique improves the prediction accuracy by 1.5%, achieves 1.6% lesser classification error, and utilizes 17.7% lesser rounds to reach the maximum accuracy.

Gastrointestinal (GI) tract diseases are on the rise in the world. These diseases can have fatal consequences if not diagnosed in the initial stages. WCE (wireless capsule endoscopy) is the advanced technology used to inspect gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcerative-colitis, polyps, esophagitis, and ulcers. WCE produces thousands of frames for a single patient’s procedure for which manual examination is tiresome, time-consuming, and prone to error; therefore, an automated procedure is needed. WCE images suffer from low contrast which increases inter-class and intra-class similarity and reduces the anticipated performance. In this paper, an efficient GI tract disease classification technique is proposed which utilizes an optimized brightness-controlled contrast-enhancement method to improve the contrast of the WCE images. The proposed technique applies a genetic algorithm (GA) for adjusting the values of contrast and brightness within an image by modifying the fitness function, which improves the overall quality of WCE images. This quality improvement is reported using qualitative measures, such as peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR), mean square error (MSE), visual information fidelity (VIF), similarity index (SI), and information quality index (IQI). As a second step, data augmentation is performed on WCE images by applying multiple transformations, and then, transfer learning is used to fine-tune a modified pre-trained model on WCE images. Finally, for the classification of GI tract disease, the extracted features are passed through multiple machine-learning classifiers. To show the efficacy of the proposed technique in the improvement in classification performance, the results are reported for the original dataset as well as the contrast-enhanced dataset. The results show an overall improvement of 15.26% in accuracy, 13.3% in precision, 16.77% in recall rate, and 15.18% in F-measure. Finally, a comparison with the existing techniques shows that the proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques.

Heart disease is one of the lethal diseases causing millions of fatalities every year. The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) based healthcare effectively enables a reduction in death rate by early diagnosis and detection of disease. The biomedical data collected using IoMT contains personalized information about the patient and this data has serious privacy concerns. To overcome data privacy issues, several data protection laws are proposed internationally. These privacy laws created a huge problem for techniques used in traditional machine learning. We propose a framework based on federated matched averaging with a modified Artificial Bee Colony (M-ABC) optimization algorithm to overcome privacy issues and to improve the diagnosis method for the prediction of heart disease in this paper. The proposed technique improves the prediction accuracy, classification error, and communication efficiency as compared to the state-of-the-art federated learning algorithms on the real-world heart disease dataset.

Gait is commonly defined as the movement pattern of the limbs over a hard substrate, and it serves as a source of identification information for various computer-vision and image-understanding techniques. A variety of parameters, such as human clothing, angle shift, walking style, occlusion, and so on, have a significant impact on gait-recognition systems, making the scene quite complex to handle. In this article, we propose a system that effectively handles problems associated with viewing angle shifts and walking styles in a real-time environment. The following steps are included in the proposed novel framework: (a) real-time video capture, (b) feature extraction using transfer learning on the ResNet101 deep model, and (c) feature selection using the proposed kurtosis-controlled entropy (KcE) approach, followed by a correlation-based feature fusion step. The most discriminant features are then classified using the most advanced machine learning classifiers. The simulation process is fed by the CASIA B dataset as well as a real-time captured dataset. On selected datasets, the accuracy is 95.26% and 96.60%, respectively. When compared to several known techniques, the results show that our proposed framework outperforms them all.

Globally, gastrointestinal (GI) tract diseases are on the rise. If left untreated, people may die from these diseases. Early discovery and categorization of these diseases can reduce the severity of the disease and save lives. Automated procedures are necessary, since manual detection and categorization are laborious, time-consuming, and prone to mistakes. In this work, we present an automated system for the localization and classification of GI diseases from endoscopic images with the help of an encoder–decoder-based model, XceptionNet, and explainable artificial intelligence (AI). Data augmentation is performed at the preprocessing stage, followed by segmentation using an encoder–decoder-based model. Later, contours are drawn around the diseased area based on segmented regions. Finally, classification is performed on segmented images by well-known classifiers, and results are generated for various train-to-test ratios for performance analysis. For segmentation, the proposed model achieved 82.08% dice, 90.30% mIOU, 94.35% precision, and 85.97% recall rate. The best performing classifier achieved 98.32% accuracy, 96.13% recall, and 99.68% precision using the softmax classifier. Comparison with the state-of-the-art techniques shows that the proposed model performed well on all the reported performance metrics. We explain this improvement in performance by utilizing heat maps with and without the proposed technique.

Globally, pests and plant diseases severely threaten forestry and agriculture. Plant protection could be substantially enhanced by using non-contact, extremely effective, and reasonably priced techniques for identifying and tracking pests and plant diseases across large geographic areas. Precision agriculture is the study of using other technologies, such as hyperspectral remote sensing (RS), to increase cultivation instead of traditional agricultural methods with less negative environmental effects. In this work, we proposed a novel deep-learning architecture and optimization algorithm for crop leaf disease recognition. In the initial step, a multilevel contrast enhancement technique is proposed for a better visual of the disease on the leaves of cotton and wheat. After that, we proposed three novel residual block and self-attention mechanisms named 3-RBNet Self, 5-RBNet Self, and 9-RBNet Self. After that, the proposed models are trained on enhanced images and later extracted deep features from the self-attention layer. The 5-RBNET Self and 9-RBNET Self performed well in terms of accuracy and precision rate; therefore, we did not consider the 3-RBNET Self for the next process. The dragonfly optimization algorithm is proposed for the best feature selection and applied to the self-attention features of 5-RBNET Self and 9-RBNET Self models to improve the classification performance further and reduce the computational cost. The proposed method is evaluated on two publically available crop disease images, such as the Cotton, Wheat, and EuroSAT datasets. For both crops, the proposed method obtained a maximum accuracy of 98.60 and 93.90%, respectively, whereas for the EuroSAT, the proposed method obtained an accuracy of 83.10%. Compared to the results with recent techniques, the proposed method shows improved accuracy and precision rate.
