Watson is a benthic marine ecologist whose expertise lies in investigating the interaction of humans with marine systems through pollution, exploitation and management. His research focuses on using benthic species and habitats to assess the role of management in protection from exploitation through fisheries and aquaculture as well as the impacts of key pollutants. His research group employs a suite of methods including field and mesocosm experiments, and complemented by meta-analysis and modelling. He collaborates internationally and leads a diverse research group currently comprising 4 post-doctoral researchers, 3 PhD students, and a number of postgraduates (MRes and MSc).
