Watershed landscape ecological security and ecosystem service functions are the material basis and environmental guarantee for promoting socioeconomic development. Analyzing the spatiotemporal characteristics of landscape ecological risks (LERs) and ecosystem services (ESs) and exploring the coupling coordination relationship between the two are of great significance for promoting the construction of ecological civilization and achieving sustainable development in the watershed. With the Min River Basin as the study area, the landscape ecological risk assessment, Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST), and Carnegie Ames–Stanford Approach (CASA) models were used to evaluate the LERs and ESs based on the shared socioeconomic pathways (SSPs), and the patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model was used to predict the land use distribution of the Min River Basin in 2030. On this basis, the coupling coordination degree model was used to explore the coupling coordination relationship between the LERs and ESs. The results show that, from 2000 to 2020, the LER of the Min River Basin gradually decreased, and the overall spatial distribution pattern was “high in the north and low in the south”. The ES of the Min River Basin initially decreased and then increased, showing a spatial distribution pattern of “low in the south and high in the north”. Among the SSPs in 2030, the LER is the largest under the SSP3 scenario and the smallest under the SSP4 scenario. The ES improvement is the most significant under the SSP1 scenario and the lowest under the SSP3 scenario. From 2000 to 2030, the coupling coordination degree of the Min River Basin first decreased and then increased, showing a spatial distribution pattern of “high in the south and low in the north”. Among the five SSPs, the coupling coordination degree was the highest under SSP1. The spatial distribution of urban area is the main driving factor affecting the coupling coordination relationship between the LER and ES, and the development of social and economy is the beginning of landscape pattern optimization.

Methane (CH4) is an important greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 28 – 34 times that of CO2 over the 100-year horizon. Denitrifying anaerobic methane oxidation (DAMO) is a recently discovered process that potentially represents an important CH4 sink globally. This process involves two possible pathways: the nitrite-dependent DAMO mediated by NC10 bacteria and the nitrate-dependent DAMO by ANME-2d archaea. Both are widely detected in freshwater and coastal habitats using molecular tools. However, the distributions of these two processes and the functional microorganisms and their interactions with other N cycling pathways are far from clear. In this review, we conducted a scientometric analysis on a co-citation network consisting of 835 references derived from 354 citing articles closely related to the distribution of DAMO in the environment. Through this analysis, we found that current studies focus more on freshwater systems than coastal systems, and ANME-2d archaea are generally under-studied compared to NC10 bacteria. The emerging research topics in this area include AMO processes coupled to alternative electron acceptors and their role as CH4 sinks. We further reviewed papers focusing on DAMO distribution in freshwater and coastal environments guided by the result of the scientometric analysis. Finally, we identified several areas that require further research and proposed future research including comparisons of DAMO with other N cycling pathways and environmental conditions in the context of the river-estuary-sea continuum.

Abiotic processes of nitrogen (N) are suggested to contribute to nitrous oxide (N2O) production; however, the important role of these processes in N2O emissions is invariably ignored. This review synthesized the main abiotic processes of hydroxylamine and nitrite and associated biogeochemical controls in estuarine and coastal ecosystems. Abiotic processes of hydroxylamine and nitrite are availably detected in estuarine and coastal environments. The abiotic processes of hydroxylamine contribute more to N2O production than the abiotic processes of nitrite in estuarine and coastal environments, suggesting that hydroxylamine plays an important role in N2O production. The isotopic fractionation effects of N can occur during the abiotic processes of hydroxylamine and nitrite and are enriched with the increasing rates of N reactions. In addition, abiotic processes of hydroxylamine and nitrite are highly dependent on pH, oxygen, Fe2+, Fe3+, and Mn4+ and are also triggered by the increasing substrate contents. These results suggest that abiotic processes of hydroxylamine and nitrite have been greatly concerned for the estuarine and coastal environments, whereas the dynamics of these processes are still sparse for projecting N fates and dynamics in response to environmental factors changes. This review highlights the importance of abiotic processes of N and associated environmental implications and presents the future trend of N cycling in estuarine and coastal environments.

With rapid economic development and urban expansion, China faces a serious imbalance between production, living, and ecological land use, in which the erosion of water ecological space by urban expansion is especially notable. In order to alleviate or solve this imbalance, this study constructs the water ecological space in the Mulan River Basin based on national land spatial planning using remote sensing statistics and the 2000–2020 statistical yearbooks for the Mulan River Basin. A landscape index is applied to explore this landscape in terms of its production–living–ecological space (PLES) patterns and evolutionary characteristics. Factors affecting the drivers of PLES changes are analyzed through Geo-Detector, and predictions are made using the cellular automata Markov (CA-Markov) model. It was found that (1) PLES distribution patterns in the Mulan River Basin from 2000 to 2020 are dominated by non-watershed ecological spaces, with a significant expansion of living space. Its ecological space is shrinking, and there is significant spatial variation between its near-river and fringe areas. (2) Of the PLES conversions, the most dramatic conversions are those of production space and living space, with 81.14 km2 of production space being transferred into living space. Non-water ecological space and water ecological space are also mainly transferred into production space. (3) As shown by the results of the landscape index calculation, non-water ecological space in the Mulan River Basin is the dominant landscape, the values of the Shannon diversity index (SHDI) and Shannon homogeneity index (SHEI) are small, the overall level of landscape diversity is low, the aggregation index (AI) is high, and the degree of aggregation is obvious. (4) The progressive PLES changes in the Mulan River Basin are influenced by a combination of natural geographic and socioeconomic factors, with the mean population density and mean elevation being the most important factors affecting PLES changes among social and natural factors, respectively. (5) The Kappa coefficient of the CA-Markov model simulation is 0.8187, showing a good simulation accuracy, and it is predicted that the area of water ecological space in the Mulan River Basin will increase by 3.66 km2 by 2030, the area of production space and non-water ecological space will further decrease, and the area of construction land will increase by 260.67 km2. Overall, the aquatic ecological space in the Mulan River Basin has made progress in terms of landscape ecological protection, though it still faces serious erosion. Therefore, attaching importance to the restoration of the water ecological space in the Mulan River Basin, integrating multiple elements of mountains, water, forests, fields, and lakes, optimizing the spatial structure of its PLES dynamics, and formulating a reasonable spatial planning policy are effective means of guaranteeing its ecological and economic sustainable development. This study offers recommendations for and scientific defenses of the logical design of PLES spatial functions in the Mulan River Basin.

Carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry and their allometric relationships in soil and plants are hot topics that attract a lot of attention, while those rocks that form soils are often neglected. Weathering is a common geological phenomenon that may significantly influence the nutrient composition and release of nutrients from rock and its inherent soils. This study presents C, N, and P concentrations data as well as microscope petrological photographs of fresh and weathered sandstones from Longhushan World Geopark in SE China, in an attempt to investigate C, N, and P stoichiometry of rocks before and after weathering and discuss the driving mechanisms. The results show that weathering significantly decreased rock C, C/N, and C/P concentrations, slightly decreased N and N/P concentrations, and slightly increased P concentration. Microscope observations show that fresh sandstones contain calcite, apatite, microplagioclase, and organic matter, while weathered sandstones feature apatite and organic matter. The flexible allometric relationships and mineral changes before and after rock weathering indicate that chemical mechanisms, such as dissolution of carbonate and hydration of microplagioclase, have changed the existence form of C, N, P and, thus, significantly influence rock C, N, and P stoichiometry. This stoichiometry feature can be in turn used to reflect the regulation effect of rock weathering.
