Pavement skid resistance is one of the most important factors affecting road safety, and pavement texture morphology significantly influences this property. Therefore, it is crucial to investigate the relationship between pavement texture and skid resistance. This article provides an overview of recent research advancements in key areas, including the anti-skid mechanisms of asphalt pavements, factors affecting pavement anti-skid performance, methods for characterising and evaluating pavement anti-skid performance, and the relationship between the macroscopic and microscopic texture of pavements and their anti-skid performance. Based on a comparative analysis of the intrinsic mechanical interactions between asphalt pavements and rubber tyres, it was determined that the surface texture characteristics of the asphalt pavement are the most critical factor influencing its anti-skid performance. These include both macroscopic and microscopic texture parameters, which, together with the service environment, collectively influence the pavement’s anti-skid performance. The existing texture characteristics, based on the anti-skid performance of asphalt pavements, as detected by various methods and evaluated using established models, are summarised here. Finally, this article discusses the relationship between texture characteristic parameters and asphalt pavement anti-skid performance from both macro- and microtexture perspectives. This synthesis serves as a valuable reference and basis for further research and development in enhancing asphalt pavement skid resistance.

Asphalt pavements are prone to cracking in low-temperature environments, and microwave heating (MH) can heal the cracks effectively. This research mainly investigates the different MH effects on the self-healing properties of asphalt mixtures. With this objective, the three-point splitting test is conducted to generate the cracks. A microwave oven is employed to heat the samples, and a thermal camera measures the surface temperature. Results indicate that heating power and time show a positive linear correlation with healing efficiency, and the HI of the samples can reach over 80%. The HI of the samples decreases with the heating cycle, but the sample with reasonable power and time still has a HI higher than 70% after 5 cycles. The temperature peaks on thermal images indicate that uneven heating exists during heating, but the heating uniformity is within an acceptable range. The healing efficiency level (HEL) suggests that asphalt mixtures have very low inefficient healing behavior if the heating time is below 45 s, but HEL can reach 86.14% at 700 W after 60 s. Furthermore, although the HI of strength shows ideal results, the recovery of other crack parameters, including stiffness, fracture energy, flexible index, and crack resistance index, are not satisfactory.

In recent years, the potential of waste engine oil (WEO) as a rejuvenator for aged asphalt binders has gained significant attention. Despite this interest, understanding WEO’s regeneration mechanism within aged asphalt binders, particularly its diffusion behavior when mixed with both aged and virgin asphalt binders, remains limited. This study adopts a molecular dynamics approach to constructing models of virgin, aged, and rejuvenated asphalt binders with different WEO contents (3%, 6%, 9%, and 12%). Key properties such as the density, glass transition temperature, cohesive energy density, solubility parameter, viscosity, surface free energy, fractional free volume, and diffusion coefficient are simulated. Additionally, models of rejuvenated asphalt binder are combined with those of aged asphalt binder to investigate mutual diffusion, focusing on the impact of WEO on the relative concentration and binding energy. The findings reveal that WEO notably decreased the density, viscosity, and glass transition temperature of aged asphalt binders. It also improved the molecular binding within the asphalt binder, enhancing crack resistance. Specifically, a 9% WEO content can restore the diffusion coefficient to 93.17% of that found in virgin asphalt binder. Increasing the WEO content facilitates diffusion toward virgin asphalt binders, strengthens molecular attraction, and promotes the blending of virgin and aged asphalt binders.

The super absorbent polymer (SAP) has been attracting extensive concerns due to its strong capacity in water absorption and retention. The amorphous hydrogels formed by the post-absorbent SAP have the potential of clogging the micro-cracks in asphalt materials and refraining the rainwater from infiltrating. This provides the possibility of applying SAP in asphalt pavements to seal or fill the cracks and relieve the distresses caused by rainwater infiltration in the underlying layers. Before exploring the cracking sealing mechanism of SAPs in asphalt pavements, a series of experiments were performed to evaluate the feasibility and influences of SAPs in asphalt mastics and asphalt mixtures on their mechanical performances and functionalities. Firstly, the basic properties of SAPs were analyzed, and then the rheological properties of the asphalt mastics using SAP replacing mineral powder (10%, 20%, 30%, and 40% by volume) were explored. The water stability and infiltration reduction effect of the asphalt mixtures incorporated with SAP were evaluated by the Marshall stability test, immersion Marshall stability test, freeze-thaw splitting strength test, Cantabro test, and permeability test. The test results indicated that SAPs could be used in the asphalt mixtures to partially substitute mineral powder with desirable mechanical performances. When less than 10% of the mineral powder was replaced by the SAP, the high-temperature performance and fatigue life of the asphalt mastics could be improved to some extent, but both declined after the content of the SAP was larger than 10%. Due to the hydrogels formed by SAPs after water absorption, the water stability of the asphalt mixtures deteriorated with the increased content of SAPs. Moreover, the results from the permeability tests implied that the SAP hydrogels could fill the seepage channels in the material, thus improving the migration and infiltration resistances of the asphalt mixtures. With the increased contents of SAPs, the permeability coefficients of the asphalt mixtures could be reduced up to 55%. Based on the research findings in this study, when an appropriate amount of SAP was added in the asphalt materials, desirable temperature stability, water stability, and fatigue resistance could be achieved regarding actual requirements from applications. At the same time, the addition of SAPs could effectively refrain the infiltration and migration of rainwater in asphalt pavements, thus potentially mitigating the effect of water erosion on the underlying layers.

Porous asphalt mixtures play a pivotal role in enhancing pavement drainage capacity and traffic safety, where the performance of asphalt binder constitutes a determining factor. This study introduces an innovative advancement through the development of a high-viscoelastic modifier and corresponding modified asphalt based on SBS-modified asphalt, coupled with optimized preparation protocols. The optimal composition and dosage of the modifier were systematically determined through standardized tests including penetration, ductility, softening point, and bending beam rheometer (BBR) analysis. A comprehensive evaluation of road performance was conducted on two porous asphalt mixtures, namely conventional SBS-modified asphalt versus the novel high-viscoelastic modified asphalt (designated as 10-A). Experimental protocols encompassed high-temperature rutting resistance tests, low-temperature beam bending tests, freeze–thaw splitting tests, two-point bending fatigue tests, accelerated abrasion tests, and dynamic friction tester (DFT) measurements. The results demonstrate that the 10-A-modified mixture exhibits superior high- and low-temperature performance. Notably, its fatigue resistance and skid resistance showed minimal divergence from conventional SBS-modified asphalt, attributable to physicochemical crosslinking interactions among antioxidants, resins, and stabilizers. This research elucidates the synergistic mechanism of components within the 10-A modifier system. The proposed high-viscoelastic asphalt formulation meets the technical requirements for functional drainage asphalt mixtures while providing material-level support for implementing sponge city initiatives.
