The literature on portfolio selection and risk measurement has considerably advanced in recent years. The aim of the present paper is to trace the development of the literature and identify areas that require further research. This paper provides a literature review of the characteristics of financial data, commonly used models of portfolio selection, and portfolio risk measurement. In the summary of the characteristics of financial data, we summarize the literature on fat tail and dependence characteristic of financial data. In the portfolio selection model part, we cover three models: mean-variance model, global minimum variance (GMV) model and factor model. In the portfolio risk measurement part, we first classify risk measurement methods into two categories: moment-based risk measurement and moment-based and quantile-based risk measurement. Moment-based risk measurement includes time-varying covariance matrix and shrinkage estimation, while moment-based and quantile-based risk measurement includes semi-variance, VaR and CVaR.

The portfolio selection problem has been a central focus in financial research. A complete portfolio selection process includes two stages: stock pre-selection and portfolio optimization. However, most existing studies focus on portfolio optimization, often overlooking stock pre-selection. To address this problem, this paper presents a novel two-stage approach that integrates deep learning with portfolio optimization. In the first stage, we develop a stock trend prediction model for stock pre-selection called the AGC-CNN model, which leverages a convolutional neural network (CNN), self-attention mechanism, Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), and k-reciprocal nearest neighbors (k-reciprocal NN). Specifically, we utilize a CNN to capture individual stock information and a GCN to capture relationships among stocks. Moreover, we incorporate the self-attention mechanism into the GCN to extract deeper data features and employ k-reciprocal NN to enhance the accuracy and robustness of the graph structure in the GCN. In the second stage, we employ the Global Minimum Variance (GMV) model for portfolio optimization, culminating in the AGC-CNN+GMV two-stage approach. We empirically validate the proposed two-stage approach using real-world data through numerical studies, achieving a roughly 35% increase in Cumulative Returns compared to portfolio optimization models without stock pre-selection, demonstrating its robust performance in the Average Return, Sharp Ratio, Turnover-adjusted Sharp Ratio, and Sortino Ratio.

Progress on asymmetric correlations of asset returns has recently advanced considerably. Asymmetric correlations can cause problems in hedging effectiveness and overstate the value of diversification. Furthermore, considering the asymmetric correlations in portfolio construction significantly enhances performance. The purpose of this paper is to trace developments and identify areas that require further research. We examine three aspects of asymmetric correlations: first, the existence of asymmetric correlations between asset returns and their significance tests; second, the test on the existence of asymmetric correlations between different markets and financial assets; and third, the root cause analysis of asymmetric correlations. In the first part, the contents of extreme value theory, the H statistic and a model-free test are covered. In the second part, commonly used models such as copula and GARCH are included. In addition to the GARCH and copula formulations, many other methods are included, such as regime switching, the Markov switching model, and the multifractal asymmetric detrend cross-correlation analysis method. In addition, we compare the advantages and differences between the models. In the third part, the causes of asymmetry are discussed, for example, higher common fundamental risk, correlation of individual fundamental risk, and so on.

Transaction Fraud, a type of financial operational risk, remains a major threat to financial sectors and continuously imposes devastating financial impacts. This study comprehensively reviews 41 cutting-edge publications on financial transaction fraud detection using Machine Learning from January 2018 to October 2025. We establish a taxonomy to categorize the selected work into four themes: Traditional Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Ensemble Method, and Hybrid Method. Each theme is evaluated in-depth, from strengths to weaknesses. Ensemble exhibits better performance over other methods with a recall of 92.7%, a precision of 96% and an F1-score of 92.66% on average, while Traditional ML ranks last in terms of average F1-score. Preprocessing strategies, like data balancing, can enhance performance, while feature engineering requires careful evaluation before implementation. Significantly, we assess financial implications, suggesting it is essential to integrate financial metric design, feature explanation, time series patterns, and data privacy considerations into financial fraud detection—a focus that aligns with risk management frameworks and regulations. By revealing current research gaps and suggesting future directions, our study provides practical guidance for researchers and practitioners to advance financial fraud detection strategies within a highly intricate financial ecosystem.
