Giuseppe Petito, PhD, is a fixed-term Assistant Professor of Physiology at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, Italy. He obtained his PhD in Biomolecular Sciences in 2022 and holds the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Associate Professor in Physiology. His research focuses on mitochondrial physiology and the molecular mechanisms linking thyroid hormone action to metabolic homeostasis. He investigates the mitochondrial compartment, examining bioenergetics, respiratory function, mitochondrial dynamics and quality control, including mitophagy and mitochondrial stress responses. His work explores how these processes contribute to tissue adaptation and dysfunction under nutritional and hormonal challenges, particularly in obesity and type 2 diabetes. His interests also include the metabolic actions of 3,5-diiodo-L-thyronine (T2), adipose tissue remodeling and thermogenesis, insulin signaling, microRNA regulation, and the interplay between mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum stress and autophagy. He is Principal Investigator of the T2-DIAMET project, investigating T2-mediated modulation of insulin sensitivity. He serves as an Associate Editor for Frontiers in Cell and Developmental Biology and as an Early Career Researcher Editorial Board member for The FASEB Journal.
