Dr. Sarah Crosby is Director of the Zero Carbon Building Systems Lab at ETH Zürich’s Institute of Technology in Architecture, in Switzerland, where she leads research and education on zero-emission building technologies, environmental control systems, and occupant-centric design. Her work combines full-scale lab and field experimentation with building performance modelling and data-driven methods (Bayesian modelling, machine learning) to reduce carbon emissions while improving thermal comfort, air quality, and health. Previously, she was a postdoctoral research scientist at EPFL, leading an EU project benchmarking energy and indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in residential and educational buildings and developing multi-domain IEQ indices. She earned a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, and has partnered with industry and public agencies, including the City of Vancouver, where her recommendations informed published energy-modelling guidance. Dr. Crosby has taught 15+ undergraduate and graduate courses and is active in international collaborations such as IEA EBC Annexes on occupant-centric buildings and personalised environmental controls. She is a recipient of the Building and Environment Best Paper Award and UBC President’s Academic Excellence Award.
