Mobile edge computing has been considered as a promising technology to handle computation-intensive and delay-sensitive tasks in the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem such as smart city and smart tourism. However, due to user mobility, edge servers with fixed deployment are not flexible enough to handle time-varying user tasks in hot-spot areas. In this paper, a novel online unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-mounted edge server dispatching scheme is proposed to provide flexible mobile-to-mobile edge computing services. UAVs are dispatched to the appropriate hover locations by geographically merging tasks into several hot-spot areas. Theoretical analysis guarantees the worst-case performance bound. Extensive evaluation driven by real-world mobile requests shows that while maintaining a good latency fairness, the mobile server dispatching scheme can serve more UEs as well as achieving a high resource utilization. Moreover, the hybrid scheme can satisfy even more user demands while dispatching fewer UAVs with a higher server utilization.

Recent years have witnessed the flourish of new promising technologies to prolong the lifetime of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Employing mobile vehicles for wireless charging and data collection is able to balance the load of WSNs, and meanwhile, provide a reliable energy replenishment for sustainable network operations. Different from traditional charging scheduling policies where sensor nodes passively wait for the arrival of mobile vehicles, a novel dynamic clustering based mobile-to-cluster (M2C) scheme is proposed to optimize the service process for both sensor nodes and the vehicle in an active way. Requiring only local residual energy information, M2C refreshes the cluster-based network topology to ensure no sensor nodes will run out of energy before getting charged. By estimating the energy consumption of being a cluster head, the sensor nodes with residual energy close to the estimation are actively elected as head nodes. More head nodes with low residual energy will be visited, reducing the travel distance along with a higher energy efficiency of charging. Furthermore, the convergence and worst-case performance of M2C are theoretically analyzed. Performance evaluation results show that compared with the state-of-the-art schemes, our design reduces the travel distance and charging latency by about 10% and 50%, respectively.

Low-latency data service is an increasingly critical challenge for data center applications. In the modern distributed storage systems, proper data placement helps reduce the data movement delay, which can contribute to the service latency reduction tremendously. Existing data placement solutions have often assumed the prior distribution of data requests or discovered it via trace analysis. However, data placement is a difficult online decision-making problem faced with dynamic network conditions and time-varying user request patterns. The conventional static model-based solutions are less effective to handle the dynamic system. With an overall consideration of data movement and analytical latency, we develop a reinforcement learning-based framework DataBot+, automatically learning the optimal placement policies. DataBot+ adopts neural networks, trained with a variant of Q-learning, whose input is the real-time data flow measurements and whose output is a value function estimating the near-future latency. For instantaneous decision making, DataBot+ is decoupled into two asynchronous production and training components, ensuring that the training delay will not introduce extra overheads to handle the data flows. Evaluation results driven by real-world traces demonstrate the effectiveness of our design.

Mobile-edge cloud computing, an emerging and prospective computing paradigm, can facilitate the complex application execution on resource-constrained mobile devices by offloading computation-intensive tasks to the mobile-edge cloud server, which is usually deployed in close proximity to the wireless access point. However, in the multichannel wireless interference environment, the competition of mobile users for communication resources is not conducive to the energy efficiency of task offloading. Therefore, how to make the offloading decision for each mobile user and select its suitable channel become critical issues. In this paper, the problem of the offloading decision is formulated as a 0-1 nonlinear integer programming problem under the constraints of channel interference threshold and the time deadline. Through the classification and priority determination for the mobile devices, a reverse auction-based offloading method is proposed to solve this optimization problem for energy efficiency improvement. The proposed algorithm not only achieves the task offloading decision but also gives the facility of resource allocation. In the energy efficiency performance aspects, simulation results show the superiority of the proposed scheme.
