Vehicular edge computing (VEC) is considered as a novel paradigm to enhance the safety of automated vehicles and intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The computation offloading strategies are the key point of VEC, and the effect of time-varying channels cannot be ignored during the task transmission period. This paper investigates the utility maximization problem with task delay requirement constraints, in which the influence of time-varying channel on the task offloading strategies during the task offloading period is considered. The time-varying fading channel leads to the time-varying spectrum efficiency (SE), so the previous offloading strategies are questionable when the additional uncertain allocated bandwidth is taken into account. To deal with it, we first propose a linearization based Branch and Bound (LBB) algorithm to solve the fixed SE problem without considering the time-varying channel characteristics. Considering the complexity of the LBB algorithm, a closest rounding integer (CRI) algorithm is proposed to solve the fixed SE problem. Then, based on the resource allocation strategies of the fixed SE problem, we propose the LBB based computation offloading (LBBCO) algorithm and the CRI based computation offloading (CRICO) algorithm to solve the original problem for both the static tasks and dynamic tasks. The proposed LBBCO/CRICO algorithms are also applicable to multi-vehicle and multi-task scenarios. Furthermore, we analyze the effect of small-scale fading on the proposed offloading strategies. The simulation results show that the average utilities of LBBCO and CRICO algorithms have a small gap by 3.93% and 6.13% only to the upper bound, respectively. Meanwhile, the proposed LBBCO and CRICO algorithms can outperform the previous state-of-the-art solution by 4.52% and 2.38%, respectively.

Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure System (CVIS) can provide innovative services for traffic management and enable trips to be safer, more coordinated, and smarter. In the CVIS, the vehicles upload crowd sensing data to the Vehicular Edge Computing (VEC) server for quick data fusion and informed decision-making. However, with the ever-increasing number of vehicles, the VEC server cannot undertake massive computation-intensive tasks due to the limited edge computing capabilities. In this paper, we propose a reverse offloading framework that can fully utilize the vehicular computation resource to relieve the burden of the VEC server and further reduce the system latency. Under the proposed offloading framework, the binary reverse offloading (BRO) and partial reverse offloading (PRO) strategies are designed for two types of tasks, i.e., non-partitioned tasks and partitioned tasks. We formulate the system latency minimization problem by optimizing reverse offloading decisions, and the communication and computation resources allocation. Due to the non-convex and existing variables coupling, the original problem is transformed into the equivalent weighted-sum optimization problem. Based on the alternative optimization, we decouple the weighted-sum optimization problems into the two subproblems, and the closed-form expressions of transmission power and computation frequency of vehicles and RSU are derived. Low complexity greedy based efficient searching (GES) algorithm and joint alternative optimization based bi-section searching (JAOBSS) algorithm are proposed for BRO and PRO strategies, respectively. The algorithm complexity and performance bounds are analyzed. Simulation results show that the proposed GES algorithm can achieve optimal performance with low complexity. Besides, the proposed GES and JAOBSS algorithms can significantly improve the performance compared with other baseline schemes by 6.14% and 13.46% at least.

The integration of vehicle edge computing (VEC) and air-ground integrated network is considered as a key technology to achieve autonomous driving. It exploits the ubiquitous service coverage and enables tasks to be offloaded to various components, such as high-altitude platform (HAP), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and roadside unit (RSU). In this article, we address the challenge of minimizing the overall task offloading delay in the air-ground integrated VEC network through a joint multicomputation equipment selection and multidimensional resource allocation (JCESRA) problem. Considering the nonconvexity inherent in the problem, we employ the fundamental idea of the block coordinate descent (BCD) method to tackle it. Initially, we exclude the HAP and decompose the primal problem into three subproblems: 1) low-altitude computation equipment selection; 2) joint bandwidth and computation resource allocation; and 3) UAV trajectory design. The first subproblem, which involves integer programming, is solved by using the many-to-one matching method. Meanwhile, we utilize the CVX and successive convex approximation (SCA) method to solve the last two subproblems, respectively. Considering the matching externality, we utilize the coalition game method to deal with it. Based on the solutions of the three subproblems, the JCESRA algorithm without considering the HAP has been proposed. Subsequently, we consider the HAP into the problem. Because the task offloading decision and computation resource allocation of the HAP problem can be viewed as a knapsack problem, we utilize the dynamic programming method to solve it. Because some tasks are offloaded to the HAP, there are some redundant computation resources in UAVs and RSU. We reallocate the computation resources of UAVs and RSU to further reduce the task offloading delay. At last, we present the complete JCESRA algorithm. The simulation results unequivocally indicate that the proposed JCESRA algorithm outperforms other algorithms by significantly reducing the task offloading delay.

Compressive data gathering (CDG) is an adequate method to reduce the amount of data transmission, thereby decreasing energy expenditure for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Sleep scheduling integrated with CDG can further promote energy efficiency. Most of existing sleep scheduling methods for CDG were formulated as centralized optimization problems which introduced many extra control message exchanges. Meanwhile, a few distributed methods usually adopted stochastic decision which could not adapt to variance in residual energy of nodes. A part of nodes were prone to prematurely run out of energy. In this paper, a reinforcement learning-based sleep scheduling algorithm for CDG (RLSSA-CDG) is proposed. Active nodes selection is modeled as a finite Markov decision process. The mode-free Q learning algorithm is used to search optimal decision strategies. Residual energy of nodes and sampling uniformity are considered into the reward function of the Q learning algorithm for load balance of energy consumption and accurate data reconstruction. It is a distributed algorithm that avoids large amounts of control message exchanges. Each node takes part in one step of the decision process. Thus, computation overhead for sensor nodes is affordable. Simulation experiments are carried out on the MATLAB platform to validate the effectiveness of the proposed RLSSA-CDG against the distributed random sleep scheduling algorithm for CDG (DSSA-CDG) and the original sparse-CDG algorithm without sleep scheduling. The simulation results indicate that the proposed RLSSA-CDG outperforms the two contrast algorithms in terms of energy consumption, network lifetime, and data recovery accuracy. The proposed RLSSA-CDG reduces energy consumption by 4.64% and 42.42%, respectively, compared to the DSSA-CDG and the original sparse-CDG, prolongs life span by 57.3%, and promotes data recovery accuracy by 84.7% compared to the DSSA-CDG.

In this work, we investigate the transmission and offloading strategy in the nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-enabled fog computing system for the Internet of Things (IoT). We aim to minimize the total energy consumption of the IoT system while satisfying the latency requirements. Due to the energy minimization problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear programming, we decompose the problem into two subproblems for different optimizing variables, i.e., fog node selection and resource allocation subproblems, and propose a multinode collaboration transmission and computation (MCTC) algorithm. Specifically, the fog node selection subproblem can be transformed into the assignment problem, which is constructed as a bipartite graph to obtain the node selection strategy. For the resource allocation subproblem, we propose an iterative algorithm to obtain the offloading workload, duration allocation, and computation resource. Simulation results are provided, which demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the other strategies by 56.88% at least.

Benefiting from the progress of microelectromechanical system (MEMS) technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can run a large number of complex applications. One of the most critical challenges for complex WSN applications is the huge computing demands and limited battery energy without any replenishment. The recent development of UAV‐assisted cooperative computing technology provides a promising solution to overcome these shortcomings. This paper addresses a three‐tier WSN model for UAV‐assisted cooperative computing, which includes several sensor nodes, a moving UAV equipped with computing resources, and a sink node (SN). Computation tasks arrive randomly at each sensor node, and the UAV moves around above the sensor nodes and provides computing services. The sensor nodes can process the computation tasks locally or cooperate with the UAV or SN for computing. In a life cycle of the UAV, we aim to maximize the energy efficiency of cooperative computing by optimizing the UAV path planning on the constraints of node energy consumption and task deadline. To adapt to the time‐varying indeterminate environment, a deep Q network‐ (DQN‐) based path planning algorithm is proposed. Simulation studies show that the performance of the proposed algorithm is better than the competitive algorithms, significantly improves the energy efficiency of cooperative computing, and achieves energy consumption balance.
