Fusarium oxysporum (F. oxysporum) is a common contaminant of dried fish, and the T-2 synthesis by this organism in dried fish products poses a serious public health risk. In this study, we investigated the effects of iturin A, a cyclic lipopeptide produced by Bacillus subtilis, on the growth and synthesis of the T-2 toxin of F. oxysporum, and transcriptomics was conducted. Results showed that the inhibitory effect of iturin A on F. oxysporum was significantly enhanced with an increase in iturin A concentrations. More specifically, compared with the control group, all indexes in the iturin A treatment group with 50 μg/mL were decreased to 24.84 mm, 0.33 × 106 cfu/mL, and 5.86 ng/mL for the colony diameter, number of spores, and concentration of T-2 toxin, respectively. Furthermore, iturin A was proven to destroy the integrity of cell membranes and cause a significant increase in ROS at 25 μg/mL or 50 μg/mL. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that with the treatment of iturin A, the genes of the oxidation-reduction process were up-regulated, while the gene expression of mycelial growth, cell integrity, transmembrane transport, energy metabolism, and others were down-regulated. More importantly, the Tri5 gene cluster was significantly inhibited. This study provided new insights into the mechanism for the inhibitory effect of iturin A on the growth and T-2 toxin synthesis of F. oxysporum and theoretical guidance for the application of iturin A in the preservation of dried aquatic products.

Chromium (Cr) is a common heavy-metal pollutant that poses a significant threat to both the environment and human health. Herein, a novel strain Lysinibacillus capsici FPHNCRA4-48, with a high Cr tolerance and removal performance, was isolated from Cr-contaminated plant water in Changde, Hunan Province. Structural characterization and proteomic analyses were performed to investigate the Cr removal performance and molecular mechanism of L. capsici FPHNCRA4-48. FPHNCRA4-48 can effectively remove more than 99% of the Cr(VI) at an initial concentration of 1000 μmol/L. The FTIR, 3D-EEM, and XPS results revealed that -OH, -NH2, and -CO-NH2 derived from extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) were mainly involved in Cr(VI) removal. Interestingly, the protein content in the EPS increased significantly (1.32-fold) after exposure to Cr(VI). Moreover, proteomic analysis revealed that genes (rpmA, rpmI, rpmC, rplI, rpmD, deoB, deoC) related to translation and carbohydrate metabolism, and genes (pyk, icd, rpiB, eno) related to amino acid biosynthesis were all significantly up-regulated, suggesting that these pathways related to protein synthesis in L. capsici FPHNCRA4-48 were activated under Cr(VI) stress. Finally, KEGG ribosome pathway enrichment occurred. These data highlight the importance of microbial EPSs in bioremediation in Cr-polluted environments. This study identified highly efficient Cr(VI)-removing bacterial strains and conducted an in-depth analysis of the removal mechanism of their extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), thereby providing theoretical foundations and technical support for the biological remediation of Cr(VI)-contaminated water bodies.

Microcystins (MCs) produced by cyanobacteria can contaminate aquatic foods, but drinking water surveillance does not directly characterize dietary exposure. This critical narrative and framework review evaluates environmental transfer, tissue residues, analytical coverage, toxicity, exposure assessment, and management for fish, bivalves, crustaceans, and related products, with a separate assessment of algal dietary supplements. Evidence is organized by species, consumed tissue, concentration basis, analytical fraction, congener coverage, and consumption scenario. Reported concentrations are not directly comparable when studies analyze different organs or use different extraction procedures and mass bases. Paired analyses of tilapia muscle illustrate how measurements limited to free congeners can miss a substantial additional burden, while shellfish studies show why clearance requires verification in the edible tissue. Structural and toxicological evidence explains why MC-LR provides a reference for assessment but does not fully characterize every mixture. We propose a framework linking environmental warnings to product sampling, validated quantification, explicit exposure scenarios, and proportionate management. Priorities are comparable occurrence reporting, interlaboratory validation, characterization of the oral relevance of bound fractions, and congener-specific toxicity data. Neither a positive screening result nor an exceedance of a chronic intake benchmark alone establishes the probability of illness from an individual meal.
