Groupers are commercial, mainly reef-associated fishes, classified in the family Epinephelidae (Perciformes). This study first sequenced the complete mitogenomes of Cephalopholis leopardus, Cephalopholis spiloparaea, Epinephelus amblycephalus, and Epinephelus hexagonatus. The lengths of the four Epinephelidae mitogenomes ranged from 16,585 base pair (bp) to 16,872 bp with the typical gene order. All tRNA genes had a typical cloverleaf structure, except the tRNA-Ser (AGY) gene which was lacking the entire dihydrouridine arm. The ratio of nonsynonymous substitution (Ka) and synonymous substitution (Ks) indicated that four groupers were suffering a purifying selection. Phylogenetic relationships were reconstructed by Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) methods based on all mitogenomic data of 41 groupers and 2 outgroups. The identical topologies result with high support values showed that Cephalopholis and Epinephelus are not monophyletic genera. Anyperodon and Cromileptes clustered to Epinephelus. Aethaloperca rogaa and Cephalopholis argus assembled a clad. Cephalopholis leopardus, C. spiloparaea, and Cephalopholis miniata are also in a clade. Epinephelushexagonatus is close to Epinephelus tauvina and Epinephelus merra, and E. amblycephalus is a sister group with Epinephelus stictus. More mitogenomic data from Epinephelidae species are essential to understand its taxonomic status with the family Serranidae.

Geological events, landscape features, and climate fluctuations have shaped the distribution of genetic diversity and evolutionary history in freshwater fish, but little attention has been paid to that around the Gulf of Tonkin; therefore, we investigated the phylogeographic structure of the dwarf snakehead (Channa gachua) on Hainan Island and mainland China, as well as two populations in Vietnam. We attempted to elucidate the origins of freshwater fish in South Hainan by incorporating genetic data from DNA markers on both the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (cyt b) and the nuclear recombination‐activating gene 1 (RAG‐1). Mitochondrial phylogenetic analysis identified two major lineages (lineages A and B), which may represent separate species. Divergence data suggested that C. gachua populations diverged between 0.516 and 2.376 myr. The divergence of the two cryptic species is congruent with sea‐level rise, which subsequently isolated Hainan from the mainland. During the Pleistocene glaciations, the entire region of the Gulf of Tonkin and the Qiongzhou Strait became part of the coastal plain of the Asian continent, which might have resulted in the current distribution patterns and dispersal routes of C. gachua populations. The formation of three sublineages in lineage A indicated that the Gulf of Tonkin was a geographical barrier between Hainan Island and mainland China but not between Vietnam and Hainan Island. The results of this study may help to elucidate the origins of freshwater fish in South Hainan and the phylogeographic structure of C. gachua.

Geological events and landscape features, as well as changes in the climate during the Pliocene period, have shaped the distribution of genetic diversity and demographic history of freshwater fish in mainland China. In this study, we investigated the phylogeny and population genetic structure of Acrossocheilus species (A. fasciatus, A. kreyenbergii and A. wenchowensis) in the Zhejiang region by the mitochondrial cytochrome b (cyt-b) and control (D-loop) region s. Mitochondrial phylogenetic analysis revealed three major lineages (lineages A, B and C), which may represent A. fasciatus, A. wenchowensis and A. kreyenbergii, respectively. Our results revealed that A. fasciatus and A. wenchowensis diverged from A. kreyenbergii in the Zhejiang region. The uplift of the Wuyi Mountains and the Xianxia Mountains served as an important geographic barrier in the diversification of the three Acrossocheilus species. The most recent common ancestors (TMRCAs) of the three lineages and lineages A + B were dated to 1.859 and 1.614 myr, respectively. Our results indicate that the effective population sizes of A. fasciatus and A. wenchowensis remained constant from the past to the present, as supported by ABC analysis. For conservation and protection, a strategy is required because of their genetic uniqueness, and we suggest that the two regions divided by the Xianxia Mountains be regarded as different management units (Mus), conforming to the major zoological regions of the Zhejiang region.

The ichthyofauna of continental islands is characterized by immigration through a land bridge due to fluctuating sea levels. Hainan Island is adjacent to the southern margin of mainland China and provides opportunities for understanding the origin and diversification of freshwater fishes. The aim of our study was to evaluate the level of genetic variation and phylogeographic structure of Opsariichthys hainanensis on Hainan Island and mainland China, using mtDNA cyt b gene (1140 bp) and D-loop (926 bp), nuclear RAG1 gene (1506 bp), and 12 microsatellite loci. Mitochondrial phylogenetic analysis identified five major lineages according to the geographical distribution from different populations. We suggested that two dispersal events occurred: the population in the Changhua River migrated to the Red River (Lineage B), and the populations in the South Hainan region moved northwards to the North Hainan region. However, populations in Northwest Hainan Island dispersed to the populations around the Gulf of Tonkin (Lineage A1) and populations in Northeast Hainan Island dispersed to the populations in mainland China (Lineage A2). Our results indicated that the populations of O. hainanensis suffered a bottleneck event followed by a recent population expansion supported by the ABC analysis. We suggest that O. hainanensis populations were found mostly in the lowlands and a lack of suitable freshwater habitat in southern mainland China and Hainan during the Last Interglacial period, and then expansion occurred during the Last Glacial Maximum.

In this study, we firstly determined the complete mitogenome of the Japanese topeshark (Hemitriakis japonica), which belong to the family Triakidae and was assessed as Endangered A2d on the IUCN Red List in 2021. The mitogenome is 17,301 bp long, has a high AT content (60.0%), and contains 13 protein-coding genes, 22 tRNA genes, 2 rRNA genes, a control region and specially a 594 bp-long non-coding region between Cytb gene and tRNA-Thr gene. The novel non-coding region share high sequence similarity with segments of the former and latter genes, so it was recognized as a duplication remnant. In addition, the Cytb gene and tRNA-Thr gene tandemly duplicated twice while accompanied by being deleted once at least. This is the first report of mitogenomic gene-arrangement in Triakidae. The phylogenetic trees were constructed using Bayesian inference (BI) and maximum likelihood (ML) methods based on the mitogenomic data of 51 shark species and two outgroups. In summary, basing on a novel type of gene rearrangements in houndshark mitogenome, the possibly rearranged process was analyzed and contributed further insight of shark mitogenomes evolution and phylogeny.

Bisphenol S (BPS), one of the substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA), is widely used in various commodities. The BPS concentrations in surface water have gradually increased in recent years, making it a predominant bisphenol analogue in the aquatic environment and raising concerns about its health and ecological effects on aquatic organisms. For this study, we conducted a 96 h acute toxicity test and a 15-day developmental exposure test to assess the adverse effects of BPS exposure in Chinese medaka (Oryzias sinensis), a new local aquatic animal model. The results indicate that the acute exposure of Chinese medaka embryos to BPS led to relatively low toxicity. However, developmental exposure to BPS was found to cause developmental abnormalities, such as decreased hatching rate and body length, at 15 dpf. A transcriptome analysis showed that exposure to different concentrations of bisphenol S often induced different reactions. In summary, environmental concentrations of BPS can have adverse effects on the hatching and physical development of Chinese medaka, and further attention needs to be paid to the potential toxicity of environmental BPS.
