Carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and nano-silica (nano-SiO2) are widely used in the field of life science because of their special physical and chemical properties. In this study, the effects of different concentrations of MWCNTs (0 mg·L−1, 200 mg·L−1, 400 mg·L−1, 800 mg·L−1 and 1200 mg·L−1) and nano-SiO2 (0 mg·L−1, 150 mg·L−1, 800 mg·L−1, 1500 mg·L−1 and 2500 mg·L−1) on maize seedling growth and relative mechanisms were explored. The main results are as follows: MWCNTs and nano-SiO2 can promote the growth of maize seedlings, and promote plant height, root length, the dry and fresh weight of seedlings, root–shoot ratio and so on. The ability to accumulate dry matter increased, the relative water content of leaves increased, the electrical conductivity of leaves decreased, the stability of cell membranes improved and the water metabolism ability of maize seedlings increased. The treatment of MWCNTs with 800 mg·L−1 and nano-SiO2 with 1500 mg·L−1 had the best effect on seedling growth. MWCNTs and nano-SiO2 can promote the development of root morphology, increase root length, root surface area, average diameter, root volume and total root tip number and improve root activity, so as to improve the absorption capacity of roots to water and nutrition. After MWCNT and nano-SiO2 treatment, compared with the control, the contents of O2·− and H2O2 decreased, and the damage of reactive oxygen free radicals to cells decreased. MWCNTs and nano-SiO2 can promote the clearance of reactive oxygen species and maintain the complete structure of cells, so as to slow down plant aging. The promoting effect of MWCNTs treated with 800 mg·L−1 and nano-SiO2 treated with 1500 mg·L−1 had the best effect. After treatment with MWCNTs and nano-SiO2, the activities of key photosynthesis enzymes PEPC, Rubisco, NADP-ME, NADP-MDH and PPDK of maize seedlings increased, which promoted the opening of stomata, improved the fixation efficiency of CO2, improved the photosynthetic process of maize plants and promoted plant growth. The promoting effect was the best when the concentration of MWCNTs was 800 mg·L−1 and the concentration of nano-SiO2 was 1500 mg·L−1. MWCNTs and nano-SiO2 can increase the activities of the enzymes GS, GOGAT, GAD and GDH related to nitrogen metabolism in maize leaves and roots, and can increase the content of pyruvate, so as to promote the synthesis of carbohydrates and the utilization of nitrogen and promote plant growth.

Improving nitrogen use efficiency is a significant scientific problem to be solved. Two maize hybrids JD27 (Jidan 27) and SD19 (Sidan 19) were selected to study the effects of nitrogen levels on root characteristic parameters and plant dry matter accumulation, distribution and transportation. We set five different nitrogen levels, which were nitrogen deficiency (000N), low nitrogen (075N), medium nitrogen (150N), high nitrogen (225N) and excessive nitrogen (300N). The results showed that the root length and root surface area of JD27 were significantly higher than those of SD19 under 075N. With the increase of nitrogen levels, the root difference among varieties gradually decreased. The root length, projection area, total surface area and total volume reached the maximum values at silking stage. The average root diameter kept stable or decreased slowly with the growth stage. The dry matter accumulation of JD27 was higher than that of SD19 at all growth stages. Increasing the amount of nitrogen fertilizer can promote the transport of dry matter to grain and improve dry matter transport efficiency after anthesis. Under the treatment of medium and high nitrogen fertilizer, maize was easy to obtain a higher yield, but excessive nitrogen fertilizer inhibited the increase of yield. This study provides theoretical and practical guidance for maize production techniques.

This study was to explore the nitrogen metabolism and transcriptome mechanism of spermidine (Spd) under drought stress conditions. Firstly, maize variety Xianyu 335 (drought insensitive type) and Fenghe 1 (drought sensitive type) were chosen as experimental materials under hydroponic conditions. The effects of PEG-6000 combined with Spd application on nitrogen metabolism were studied. Secondly, we chose maize variety Xianyu 335 for the field experiment. At the flowering stage, normal water treatment and moderate drought stress were carried out, respectively. The results showed that: (1) Hydroponics experiment showed that the content of NH4+ in the leaves of maize seedlings under drought stress increased significantly, while the content of NO3− and nitrate reductase (NR), glutamine synthetase (GS), glutamate synthase (GOGAT), glutamine dehydrogenase (GDH), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (GOT) and glutamic pyruvic transaminase (GPT) increased significantly. Spd can promote the assimilation of excess ammonia by enhancing the activities of ammonia assimilating enzymes GS/GOGAT and GDH, and transaminase (GOT and GPT), effectively alleviate the ammonia toxicity and nitrogen metabolism disorder induced by drought stress. (2) Pot experiment showed that Spd significantly promoted the root growth of maize under drought stress, so as to improve the absorption and utilization of water and nutrients. In addition, Spd can improve the chlorophyll content and photosynthetic rate of maize leaves under drought stress. After the application of exogenous Spd, the photosynthetic green leaf area increased, the leaf senescence rate slowed down, and the dry matter accumulation increased after anthesis, resulting in the increase of grain weight and grain number per ear, and finally improve the maize yield.

Enhancing chlorophyll retention in maize leaves and prolonging the grain-filling duration constitute critical strategies for yield improvement in agricultural production systems. This study investigated the mechanistic relationship between yield enhancement pathways and the leaf senescence process induced by high-input straw pellets amendment. We analyzed the impact mechanisms of green leaf area dynamics and dry matter redistribution on yield during late reproductive stages, establishing theoretical foundations for yield optimization through intensive straw pellets incorporation. The study used the maize variety Jingnongke 728 as the experimental material. Based on previous research, four treatments were set up, including no straw returning (CK), chopped straw (15 t/ha) returning to the field (FS1), a large amount of chopped straw (75 t/ha) returning to the field (FS5), and a large amount of pelletized straw (75 t/ha) returning to the field (KL5), with four replicates. A two-year experimental design systematically assessed green leaf area index (GLAI), dry matter accumulation, distribution, translocation, yield components, and grain yield to explore the differences among various treatments under different straw returning amounts and returning forms. The study detected no significant differences between FS1 and CK. Although KL5 and FS5 delayed leaf senescence, FS5 significantly depressed green leaf area index (GLAI) at the R1 stage (silking), which results in it not having more effective photosynthetic area during late phenological phases. In dry matter dynamics, KL5 exhibited 5.52–25.71% greater pre-anthesis accumulation, 2.73–60.74% higher post-anthesis accumulation, and 9.48–25.76% elevated ear dry matter allocation relative to other treatments. KL5’s post-anthesis assimilates contributed 2.43–17.02% more to grain development, concurrently increasing ear-to-total biomass ratio. Yield analysis ranked KL5 as the superior treatment with 0.68–25.15% yield advantage, driven by significantly enhanced kernel number per ear and 100-kernel mass, whereas FS5 displayed the lowest kernel count among all treatments. Returning 75 t/ha of straw pellets to the black soil area in Northeast China can significantly delay the senescence of maize leaves and increase the accumulation of dry matter after anthesis by maintaining the effective photosynthetic area of leaves in the later stage of growth, thereby achieving the goal of increasing yield. The research can offer a practical and novel approach for straw return in the black soil region of Northeast China and provide a new technological pathway for enhancing crop productivity.

While increasing planting density is a viable strategy for enhancing maize yield, it concurrently elevates the risks of lodging and accelerated leaf senescence due to intensified inter-plant competition, which can ultimately compromise yield stability. A field experiment was conducted in Heilongjiang Province and the study investigated two maize cultivars, JNK728 (Jingnongke 728) and SD5 (Saide 5), under high-density planting conditions (90,000 plants ha−1). The treatments were arranged in a factorial design, incorporating four nitrogen levels (0, 120, 240, and 360 kg N ha−1) in combination with the presence or absence of a chemical regulator (30% diethyl aminoethyl hexanoate · ethephon), with water serving as the control. Results demonstrated that the integration of 240 kg N ha−1 with chemical regulation significantly enhanced photosynthetic capacity—elevating chlorophyll content (SPAD), net photosynthetic rate (Pn), and activities of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCase) and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase)—while improving canopy structure through increased leaf area index (LAI) and optimized light distribution. This strategy also reinforced lodging resistance by optimizing plant morphology (reducing plant height and center of gravity), strengthening basal internodes (increasing stem diameter, dry weight per unit length, and mechanical strength), and promoting accumulation of stem structural components (cellulose, hemicellulose, lignin). Additionally, it facilitated post-anthesis nitrogen translocation to grains and up-regulated key nitrogen metabolism enzymes (glutamate synthetase-GS, glutamate dehydrogenase-GDH, and glutamate-pyruvate transaminase-GPT), thereby boosting nitrogen use efficiency. In contrast, excessive nitrogen (360 kg N ha−1) suppressed these benefits and increased lodging. Consequently, the combined application of 240 kg N ha−1 with chemical regulation achieved the highest yield, proving an effective approach for synergistically enhancing photosynthesis, lodging resistance, and nitrogen utilization in high-density maize systems.

Increasing planting density is an effective strategy for enhancing maize (Zea mays L.) yield. However, high density often inhibits plant growth and dry matter accumulation. Synergistic nitrogen management and chemical regulation offer an effective approach to overcoming yield limitations under high-density conditions. A two-year field experiment with two maize cultivars under high density (90,000 plants ha−1), involving four nitrogen rates combined with PGR, explored their effects on root growth, yield formation, and greenhouse gas emissions. Results showed that 240 kg N ha−1 significantly improved root morphological characteristics (root dry weight, root volume, root surface, root length) and physiological traits (bleeding sap rate, etc.), with chemical regulation providing additional enhancements. Additionally, nitrogen application increased the maximum grain-filling rate (Vmax) and enzyme activity in grains, thereby enhancing grain weight; chemical regulation increased dry matter accumulation and its contribution to grains. Reduced nitrogen application combined with chemical regulation effectively decreased greenhouse gas emission. The highest maize yield was obtained under the application of 240 kg N ha−1 combined with chemical regulation, which promoted root growth and grain formation, thereby improving yield and reducing emissions. This study indicates that the cultivation practice combining nitrogen application with chemical regulation provides an optimized approach for environmentally friendly and high-yield maize cultivation under high planting density.
