Background: Gastric cancer is a major public health problem worldwide. Social media has affected public’s daily lives in ways no one ever thought possible. Both TikoTok and its Chinese version Douyin are the most popular short video posting platform. This study aimed to evaluate the quality, accuracy, and completeness of videos for gastric cancer on TikTok and Douyin. Methods: The terms “gastric cancer” was searched on TikTok in both English and Japanese, and on Douyin in Chinese. The first 100 videos in three languages (website’s default setting) were checked. QUality Evaluation Scoring Tool (QUEST) and DISCERN as the instrument for assessing the quality of the information in each video. Content was analysed under six categories (aetiology, anatomy, symptoms, preventions, treatments, and prognosis). The educational value and completeness were evaluated with a checklist developed by the researchers. Results: A total of 78 videos in English, 63 in Japanese, and 99 in Chinese were analyzed. The types of sources were as follows: 6.4% in English, 4.8% in Japanese, and 57.6% in Chinese for health professionals; 93.6% in English, 95.2% in Japanese, and 3.0% in Chinese for private users; none in English and Japanese, but 39.4% in Chinese for other sources. In all, 20.5% in English, 17.5% in Japanese, and 93.9% in Chinese of videos had useful information about gastric cancer. Among the useful videos, the videos published in Chinese had the highest QUEST(p < 0.05) and DISCERN scores(p < 0.05), followed by those published in Japanese. Among the educational videos, prognosis in English (37.5%), symptoms in Japanese (54.5%), and prevention in Chinese (47.3%) were the most frequently covered topic. Conclusions: TikTok in English and Japanese might not fully meet the gastric cancer information needs of public, but Douyin in Chinese was the opposite.

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide, however, the mechanisms of CRC progression remain obscure. The present study investigated the clinical significance and functional role of long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) GIHCG in CRC. Methods: Expression of GIHCG was detected by quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in seven CRC cell lines and 110 CRC tissues. Comparison of clinicopathological characteristics in the high GIHCG expression group and the low GIHCG expression group was performed. The overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) of the patients were depicted with Kaplan-Meier test and compared with Log-rank test. Univariate and multivariate analyses were carried out to detect the risk factors for poor OS and PFS. In addition, expression of GIHCG was silenced with siRNAs in LoVo cells and overexpressed with pcDNA3.1-GIHCG vector in SW480 cells, respectively. And the Transwell assay, Matrigel assay, colony formation assay and Cell Counting Kit-8 assay (CCK-8) were performed to investigate the role of GIHCG in the migration, invasion and proliferation of CRC cells. Besides, the role of GIHCG in chemoresistance was also detected. Results: GIHCG was overexpressed in seven CRC cell lines and 110 CRC tissues. High GIHCG expression was correlated with lymphovascular invasion, lymph node metastasis, distant metastasis and advanced TNM stages. Moreover, patients with high GIHCG expression had much poorer OS and PFS rates. Besides, high GIHCG expression was identified as an independent risk factor for poor OS and PFS. The Transwell assay and the Matrigel assay discovered that GIHCG deficiency inhibited cell migration and invasion, while ectopic expression of GIHCG promoted migration and invasion. Besides, the colony formation assay and the CCK-8 assay verified that GIHCG increased cell proliferation ability. By establishing 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and Oxaliplatin (Oxa)-resistant LoVo cells and SW480 cells, we found chemoresistant CRC cells had much higher expression levels of GIHCG. Also, GIHCG facilitated cell survival under 5-FU or Oxa treatment. Furthermore, silencing of GIHCG notably reduced the improved cell survival rates of 5-FU or Oxa-resistant LoVo cells compared with control cells. Conclusion: GIHCG contributes to cancer progression and chemoresistance and indicates poor prognosis in CRC. GIHCG may be a promising prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target in CRC.

The benefits and risks of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy (LADG) are not yet sufficiently clear for acceptance as a standard treatment of early gastric cancer. Previous meta-analyses were not powered to reach definitive conclusions. Randomized controlled trials comparing LADG with open distal gastrectomy (ODG) for early gastric cancer in Asia and published between January 1994 and January 2018 were retrieved from PubMed, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. Patient characteristics, oncological safety and efficacy, and surgical safety were evaluated following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) and Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation guidelines (GRADE) guidelines. Trial Sequential Analysis (TSA) reduced random error and reinforced the reliability and strength of evidence. Eight trials including 2666 participants were selected. LADG benefits were an 11.6 cm shorter incision (95% CI: -13.31 to -9.88 cm; P < 0.0001), 103.81 ml less blood loss (95% CI: -133.68 to -73.94; P < 0.0001), 1.73 times less analgesic use (95% CI: -2.21 to -1.24; P < 0.0001), 0.51 days shorter time to first flatus (95% CI: -0.88 to -0.15 days; P = 0.006), lower risk of wound dehiscence (RR = 0.24, 95% CI: 0.08-0.78; P = 0.02), lower risk of surgical adverse events (RR = 0.69, 95% CI: 0.53-0.91; P = 0.008), and lower risk of respiratory complications (RR = 0.40; 95% CI: 0.20-0.79; P = 0.009) than ODG. LADG had 2.22 fewer resected lymph nodes (95% CI: -4.33 to -0.12; P = 0.04) and 76.61 min longer procedures (76.61 min, 95% CI: 57.74-95.47 min; P < 0.0001). In Asian patients, LADG had similar mortality and oncological safety, better surgical safety, less operative morbidity, less trauma, and faster recovery than ODG. It has a high role to play in node-negative cases due to better short-term outcomes but less nodal harvest. It is a recommended alternative treatment for experienced surgeons in high-volume centers.

Background: The purpose of this meta-analysis was to compare the influence of different surgical procedures on perforated appendicitis in pediatric population. Materials and Methods: Studies were identified through a computerized literature search of Pubmed, Embase, Ovid, the Cochrane Colorectal Cancer Group Controlled Trials Register, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, the Cochrane Library database, and Web of Science. Two reviewers independently assessed the quality of each study and abstracted outcome data. Data were extracted comparing laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) and open appendectomy (OA) in pediatric population with regard to several postoperative variables. We synthesized published data using fixed-effect models, expressing results as relative risk (RR). Results: Nine eligible studies were included which came from various medical centers all over the world. Statistically significant differences between “LA” and “OA” groups were found for wound infection (RR=0.88), intra-abdominal abscess (RR=1.38), and bowel obstruction (RR=0.79). Conclusions: Our meta-analysis found that LA is associated with lower incidence of wound infections and bowel obstruction, but the rate of intra-abdominal abscess was higher than OA.
