Sorption and desorption are important processes that influence the transport, transformation, and bioavailability of imidacloprid in the soils. Equilibrium batch experiments were carried out using six coastal Croatian soils. The equilibrium sorption and desorption experimental data showed the best fit to the Freundlich equation. Sorption parameters predicted with the Freundlich model, KF sor and 1/n ranged from 2.92 to 5.74 (mg/kg)/(mg/L)1/n, and 0.888 to 0.919, respectively. The sorption of imidacloprid was found to be sensitive to organic carbon (OC) content. The highest sorption was observed in Krk soil (OC 4.74%) and the lowest in Zadar soil (OC 1.06%). Fitted desorption parameter values, KF des , were consistently higher than those associated with sorption. The opposite trend was observed for the exponential parameter 1/n. Results also suggested that imidacloprid sorption-desorption by soil is concentration-dependent, i.e. at lower imidacloprid concentrations a greater sorption percentage and lower desorption percentage occurred. Desorption studies revealed that there was a hysteresis effect in all the tested soils. Hysteresis coefficient values (H) varied from 0.656 to 0.859. The study results emphasize that the controlled application of imidacloprid is obligatory, especially in soils with a low organic carbon content, in order to minimize a risk of environmental and groundwater pollution.

Metallothioneins (MTs) are small, cysteine-rich proteins which have been implicated in various forms of stress providing cytoprotective action against oxidative injury, DNA damage and apoptosis. Owing to their high affinity for physiological metals, such as zinc and copper MTs are also critical components of regulatory proteins involved in cell growth and multiplication, as well as in the maintenance of immune homeostasis. To elucidate the role of MTs in the pathomechanisms of autoimmune CNS disorders we estimated the expression of MT I+II proteins and the content of free Zn ions in the brain, spinal cord and in the liver early in the course of chronic relapsing experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (CR-EAE) pathogenesis, i.e. before the onset of any clinical symptoms. Disease was induced in the genetically susceptible Dark Agouti (DA) rats by subcutaneous injection of bovine brain homogenate in CFA. Control animals were treated with CFA alone. The data, obtained by immuno-histochemistry and in situ fluorescent labeling of free zinc ions, have shown that in the presymptomatic phase of CR-EAE (on the seventh postimmunization day) MTs I+II were markedly upregulated in the cells that form blood-brain and blood-cerebrospinal fluid barriers, as well as in the cerebellar parenchyma and hippocampal dentate gyri. Furthermore, we found that the liver also becomes a site of extensive MTs I+II synthesis shortly after immunization. Simultaneously, tissue content of free zinc ions increased at the sites of MTs induction, reflecting their antioxidative activity. The data, described in this paper point to regulatory and neuroprotective role of MTs in the pathogenesis of CR-EAE.

Periodontitis is a common oral disease affecting the tooth-supporting tissues. Bacteria have been long viewed as the main causative factor in its development; however, many investigations have proved that aberrant immune and inflammatory response and the resulting misbalance between the damage caused by reactive oxygen species and the antioxidant capacity of tissues may be an underlying factor in disease progression that reduces healing potential. The objective of the current trial is to assess the outcomes of the addition of hyaluronic acid (HA) to standard non-surgical periodontal therapy (NST) on some major oxidative stress markers in saliva. HA-based gel designed for dental application was used and the measurements were taken after 3 months. HA adjunctive therapy had a significantly greater increase in markers with antioxidant properties as well as total antioxidant capacity compared to standard NST alone. Furthermore, clinically measured levels of gingival inflammation (bleeding on probing-BOP) and periodontal destruction (clinical attachment loss-CAL) were significantly correlated with these markers, and the correlation was negative. This investigation demonstrates that HA may indeed express antioxidant properties and improve the antioxidant capacity of periodontal tissues, thus improving the prognosis for the teeth and the results of periodontal therapy. Further investigations will be necessary to determine the duration of these effects over time.

The presence of nickel could modify bacterial behavior and susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. Adhesion and biofilm formation on orthodontic archwires can be a source of bacterial colonization and possible health hazards. Staphylococcus aureus was subjected to exposure and adaptation to various sub-inhibitory concentrations of nickel. Five strains of bacteria adapted to nickel in concentrations of 62.5–1000 μg/mL were tested for adhesion and biofilm formation on nickel-titanium archwires. Archwires were previously incubated in artificial saliva. Bacteria were incubated with orthodontic wire with stirring for 4 h (adhesion) and 24 h (biofilm formation). The number of adherent bacteria was determined after sonication and cultivation on the Muller-Hinton agar. Disk diffusion method was performed on all bacteria to assess the differences in antimicrobial susceptibility. Bacteria adapted to lower concentrations of nickel adhered better to nickel-titanium than strains adapted to higher concentrations of nickel (p < 0.05). Biofilm formation was highest in strains adapted to 250 and 500 μg/mL of nickel (p < 0.05). The highest biofilm biomass was measured for strains adapted to 250 μg/mL, followed by those adapted to 1000 μg/mL. Bacteria adapted to lower concentrations of nickel demonstrated lower inhibition zone diameters in the disk diffusion method (p < 0.05), indicating increased antimicrobial resistance. In conclusion, bacteria adapted to 250 μg/mL of nickel ions adhered better, demonstrated higher biofilm formation and often had higher antimicrobial resistance than other adapted and non-adapted strains.
