Information

John Mieyal attained his B.S. in Chemistry from John Carroll University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). He pursued postdoc studies in mechanistic enzymology at Brandeis University and began his independent academic career at Northwestern University with joint appointments in Pharmacology and Biochemistry. He returned to CWRU in 1976 and has served as Graduate Program Director, Director of the Cleveland Center for Structural Biology, and Chair of the Ohio NMR Consortium. Dr. Mieyal is recognized internationally for advancing knowledge of redox regulation and signal transduction in health and disease, especially involving the glutaredoxin enzyme system and S-glutathionylation. Professor Mieyal has been a featured speaker at many international symposia on Redox Regulation and Thiol Homeostasis, including those sponsored by the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the International Redox Network, and the International Gordon Conferences. He has served on scientific review boards for the NIH, AHA, and the VA, and as guest editor for special issues of the journals Antioxidants and Redox Regulation and Antioxidants, where he serves on the editorial board. Besides his research, Dr. Mieyal has won several University awards for his medical and graduate school teaching and mentorship, including the first annual Inamori Award for Excellence in Mentoring, and he has served on the National Board of Medical Examiners.
