Megalurothrips usitatus is an economically important vegetable pest. Because of the growing demand for reducing pesticide use on vegetables, new environmentally friendly strategies for controlling M. usitatus are urgently needed. Insect odorant-binding proteins are prospective targets for screening environmentally friendly odorant attractants for pest control. However, very little is known about OBP genes in M. usitatus. Here, we identified 14 OBPs in the M. usitatus genome using HMMER and BLAST. The chromosomal location showed that these OBPs were widely distributed across eight chromosomes. The analysis of the gene and protein structure characteristics of OBPs in M. usitatus revealed substantial diversity within the OBP gene family. The spatiotemporal expression profiles showed that ten out of 14 MusiOBPs displayed male biased expression, which were highly expressed in antennae, suggesting that they may play a crucial role in the recognition of host plant volatiles and thrips aggregation pheromones. Notably, only MusiOBP8 was significantly higher expressed in female adults, indicating a potential involvement in reproduction. Moreover, MusiOBP7 and MusiOBP13 were highly expressed in the pupae, indicating their possible role in immune responses. These results provide an important foundation for further exploration of the functions of the OBPs in M. usitatus.

Thrip is a collective name for Thysanoptera, an agricultural pest that is widely distributed around the world and transmits viruses, in addition, to directly eating crops, causing extremely serious economic losses. Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is one of the main viruses transmitted by thrips. Since the discovery of TSWV in 1919, much progress and achievements have been made in its characteristics, mechanism of transmission, comprehensive prevention and control of TSWV in the past hundred years. This article summarizes the characteristics, propagation mechanism and control measures of TSWV transmission in thrips, and looks forward to future research directions. Key words: Tomato spotted wilts virus, thrips species, quarantine inspection, integrated control. Rice volatiles play a crucial role in mediating resistance to the brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens Stål, Hemiptera: Delphacidae), a major pest of rice crops. In this study, we analyzed secondary metabolites from rice plants to identify compounds associated with insect behavior. A total of 31 volatile metabolites were detected, among which 16 differed significantly between 51 resistant or susceptible varieties. Fifteen volatiles were more abundant in susceptible plants, while one was enriched in resistant varieties. Electrophysiological (EAG) and Y-tube olfactometer assays revealed that both male and female adults exhibited positive chemotaxis toward five volatiles: Cyclohexanone, 2,2,6-trimethyl-; 3-Cyclohexen-1-one, 3,5,5-trimethyl-; (+)-Isomenthol; Benzoic acid, 2-hydroxy-, methyl ester; and 2-Methoxy-4-vinylphenol. In contrast, male adults were repelled by Benzaldehyde, 3-ethyl-, and 3-Buten-2-one, 4-(2,6,6-trimethyl-1-cyclohexen-1-yl)-. These results indicate that characteristic volatiles serve as functional cues for host selection and may act as phytochemical markers for assessing rice resistance. The findings provide new insights into plant–insect chemical interactions and suggest potential strategies for environmentally friendly pest management, including the use of attractant- or repellent-based approaches and breeding for optimized volatile profiles to control N. lugens.
